Buried secrets never stay hidden in the South.

Savannah
I’m the one who broke up the golden couple. The woman people still whisper about, point at, and give dirty looks to.

Did I sleep with the prom king? No. Did I sleep with the town’s golden boy on vacation from college? Yes.

Did I believe that he was going to marry me? Wholeheartedly.

Did he? Not even close. He got engaged right in front of me and then his father threw two hundred dollars at me and told me to take the trash out.

So, I raised my son in a town where people love him because they think that his father is the sheriff.

It was going great, everything was working out till my lie got out.

Beau

I was getting ready to take over the mayoral office from my father, who was my hero.

Until I heard the secret he hoped would stay buried forever.

My brother has a son, not just any son but a son with the woman who was my best friend.

The woman I secretly have loved from the moment she stood up to me and broke my nose in kindergarten.

I need to protect her and in order to do that, we need to get married.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Southern Storm is another book in Natasha Madison’s Southern Series, and apparently picks up where Southern Comfort left off. It can be read as a standalone, but there are interconnected storylines and characters and Savannah plays a huge part in the story that is told in the first book, Southern Chance. I did not read the first in this series and DNF the second, so I felt like there were alot of plot points I was grappling with because I did not have the backstory.

So for that reason, I am giving this 3 stars. I didn’t like how the truth about Ethan’s paternity was kept hidden. And for Savannah being a single mom, there is barely any interaction between her ad her son, I liked Beau — he was an honest, sweet, caring guy. Surprising, since his dad is such a jerk. I felt like Savannah was dealt a bad hand, and there were certain things done to her by other people as a result of her pregnancy. People in town didn’t care for her much, but was that her fault or due to gossip? The relationship between Savannah and Beau grows nicely between friendship to a true romantic relationship, and there’s a nice arc in their story.

I really think I would have liked this story better had I read the others. I wanted to give this series another chance even though I couldn’t connect with Casey and Olivia in Southern Comfort. I likes Southern Storm, but I didn’t love it.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Hot Mess by Emma Hart

97501995_2868229496624184_8133691533384744960_o

Have you grabbed Hot Mess yet?

What do you do when the whole world has seen you getting down and dirty in a broom closet?

I, Elle Evans, am on the run.
Not from the fuzz—although that would be more exciting.
No, I’m on the run from the four-year-old private tape that, thanks to my vengeful ex, has probably already ruined my vlogging career.
There’s nothing like the entire world knowing what you look like mid-O.
Creek Keys, Florida, is a million miles away from NYC and the perfect place for me to hide for the rest of summer until I can figure out what I’m going to do. Something that’s easier said than done since my new landlord’s daughter thinks you’re God’s greatest gift. Even better? Their beach house is right next to the one I’m renting, so there’s no getting away from her—or her hot, British dad.
Who most definitely does not think I’m role model material.
He might be right.
The problem is that neither of us can say no to her.
Or each other.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I loved the message behind Hot Mess: things aren’t always what they appear.

Popular vlogger Elle hightails it to the Florida Keys after her ex releases a sex tape out of revenge. She’s hoping to escape the scandal where no one knows her, but she ends up living next door to a single dad, who is the father of her biggest fan. At first, Theo is hesitant to get to know Elle and tries to keep sweet Ari away from her idol. But Theo soon discovers that the Elle renting his vacation property is sweet and kind, and nothing like the person he thought she would be simply because of a sex tape.

As Elle deals with the ramifications of the tape that she didn’t know existed, Theo and Ari end up being her biggest support system.

There is a really nice relationship that develops between Ari and Elle again, as Elle becomes a mentor to the young girl. The scene where she explains how things on the internet are distorted was fantastic, and resonated with me. Great writing on Emma Hart’s part!

As with EH’s last few books, there is also a crazy crew of Wild senior citizens who bring lots of laughs to this story!

Hot Mess was definitely an enjoyable read. Low drama, low angst, lots of laughs. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Chapter One

Jamie Five Years Later

Nine hours down.

Three to go. Three hours until I can go home, finish that box of Thin Mints I shouldn’t have bought, and binge-watch a show on Netflix.

Netflix and cookies. Netflix and single. Netflix and story of my life. “Tell me he finally agreed?” Lauren, our charge nurse, asks—referring to the appendicitis patient who’s been refusing an appendectomy all night.

I nod. “After his wife promised to buy him a new TV.” She scoffs. “I’d love to say someone being bribed to have life-saving surgery is a shocker, but after working in the ER for so long, I’m not easily shooketh.”

“Tell me about it.” I glance around the emergency room. “What’s next for me?” It’s been a slow night at Anchor Ridge Memorial Hospital, and as much as that’s a good thing, it can get boring.

She points down the hall. “Exam room three. Five-year-old with a fever.” Her tone turns bubbly as she wiggles her shoulders. “Dad is super hot, by the way.”

I shake my head and tap my knuckles against the triage desk. “I’ll let you know if I need anything.” “Ask him for his number,” she half-whispers with a thumbs-up. I roll my eyes and dismissively wave my hand. “Absolutely not.” “All work and no play makes Jamie a grumpy doctor.” “Yeah, yeah, yeah.” I spin on my heel and walk to the room. The door is cracked, and I knock, snatching a pair of latex gloves on my way in. “Hello, I’m Dr.—” I stop, stumble back two steps, and cover my mouth with my hand. Holy crap. My body tenses, and as soon as my gaze meets his, his jaw flexes.

I struggle for words as anger and disgust line his face. Words I’d planned if this moment ever happened. Unfortunately, those words become a scared bitch and run away. “Cohen,” is all I manage in a whisper. He stands tall from his chair, his narrowed eyes pinned to me, and moves to the side of the bed, blocking my view of the patient.

Lauren’s words hit me. “Five-year-old …” My attention slides from Sir Pissed Off, and I shift to the left. “Oh my God,” I whisper, gaping at the little boy in the bed. A little boy whose eyes are sleepy and nose is red and irritated. Those sleepy eyes, a walnut-brown with a slight slant, match his father’s. The same with his thick ash-brown hair. But the dimple in his chin and heart-shaped face match hers. “Is this …?” My hand shakes when I point at him. It’s a dumb question. Even if he says no, he’ll be a liar. “What are you doing here?” he repeats, his tone harsh. If I wasn’t at a loss for words, my smart-ass self would throw out something along the lines of, What do you think, dumbass? I’m sporting a doctor’s jacket with my name embroidered on it.

But I don’t. Because I can’t. It’s a challenge, wrapping my head around them being here, let alone dragging out my sarcasm. “I’m your doctor,” I finally say before signaling to the boy. “I’m his doctor.” Sound cool. Confident. You’re the fucking professional here, Jamie. “We want a different doctor,” he hisses, his voice low enough so only I can hear. “I’m the only doctor on shift tonight.” I’m speaking to Cohen, but the boy holds my interest. He’s watching this exchange, his eyes pinging back and forth between his father and me with curiosity on his tired face.

“We’ll go to another hospital then.” “Why, Dad?” the boy whines, sniffling. “I don’t feel good, and what if I puke in the car?” “I want another doctor.” His broad shoulders draw back. He raises a brow when I hold up a finger, turn, and scurry out of the room. I rush over to Lauren. “Can you watch the boy in three for a minute? I need to talk to his father privately.”

She peeks up at me from her computer and tilts her head to the side. “Yeah … sure.” Cohen is pacing the room when we walk in. “A word,” I say, jerking my head toward the doorway. Cohen’s attention darts to the boy, and he delivers a gentle smile. “I’ll be right back, buddy.” He gives him a quick peck on the head and swings his arm toward the door, his eyes cold. “After you, Your Highness.”

Lauren throws me a curious glance when he walks past her, and I shrug as if this isn’t about to be awkward city up in here.

As we leave, I hear Lauren asking the boy what his favorite cartoon is. Cohen keeps his distance while I lead us into a private room, the one reserved for breaking bad news to families.

I speak as soon as I shut the door., “Cohen—”

Too bad he doesn’t let me get more than his name out. Rude. His deep-set eyes level on me. “This is a conflict of interest, Jamie. The nurse can help us. We don’t need you.”

“We don’t need you.” The memories of the last time he said those words to me smack into me like a headache. It was the last time I saw him. The last time he looked at me with the same resentment. Either he doesn’t realize how hard his insult hit me or he doesn’t care. I snort, anger biting at me. “What do you think I’m going to do, huh? Kidnap him?” “Considering who you’re related to, who knows?” “Wow.” I clench my fists to hold myself back from smacking him in the face since his words are like a slap in mine. “You have some nerve.”

It’d make for some bad headlines if a doctor slapped a patient’s father. There’s no apology on his face when he holds up his hands. “Just saying it how I see it.” “Then allow me to say it how I see it.” I thrust my finger toward the door. “You have a sick son in there, and it’s my job to treat him. Don’t like it? I don’t give a shit.” I shove past him, stalk out of the room, and don’t check to see if he’s following me.

“Everything okay?” Lauren asks, her eyes glancing over my shoulder, and I realize Cohen is behind me, still keeping his distance.

“Peachy,” I chirp before approaching the bed and smiling down at the boy. “What’s your name, honey?”

“Noah,” he croaks. Even though I was sure it was him, my head spins at his confirmation. I tenderly squeeze his arm, and my tone turns cheerful. “Hi, Noah. I’m Dr. Gentry. Can I ask some questions about how you’re feeling?”

He nods. Cohen stalks to the other side of the bed, his eyes on me, and Lauren migrates to the corner, her nosy ass interested in this shitshow.

“He has a fever,” Cohen tells me, his tone softer. “For how long?” He scratches his scruffy cheek. “Over twenty-four hours.” “Appetite?” He shakes his head. “Not even sugar. I can hardly get him to drink, and he has no energy, which is very rare for him.”

“Cough?” “Yes.” His jerk attitude settles while we turn our attention to Noah. I ask question after question as I take his temperature and go through all the motions.

“Symptoms tell me it’s the flu,” I say, removing my gloves and tossing them into the trash. “We’ll do a test, and I also want to run some blood work to make sure we’re not missing anything.”

Cohen nods. “Thank you.” I smile at Noah. “We’ll get you back to feeling good in no time.” I give Lauren, who’s gathering supplies for the test, a head nod and leave the room.

I‘ll definitely be pairing wine with those Thin Mints tonight. Lauren comes scurrying into the doctors’ lounge ten minutes later. “Whoa, what was that about? Dude was super nice to me but acted as if you’d pissed in his Cheerios.”

Here goes.

A chill sweeps up my neck. “That’s my sister’s ex … and her son … the ones she left.” “Oh, Jerry Springer.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Stirred is a great start to a new series by Charity Ferrell! I love that there is history between single dad Cohen and ER doctor Jamie — it worked so well with this enemies-to-lovers story and played a big part in why their eventual relationship became so complicated.

Cohen is a single dad to 5 yr old Noah. He’s had nothing to do with Noah’s mom’s family since the day Heather walked out on them. Needless to say, both Cohen and Jamie are shocked to see one another one night in the ER when Noah gets sick. Of course, Jamie wants a chance to get to know her nephew, and Cohen had been so hurt by her sister, he wants nothing to do with Jamie. Little by little, he lets down his guard and for the sake of his son, Jamie gets to know adorable little Noah. Before long, Cohen finds that Jamie has made her way into his heart as well.

I think that CF does a great job of making Jamie and Cohen’s relationship different from the one that he had with Heather. They are good to each other, good for each other. There’s a real sweetness to their exchanges, even though the specter of Heather is constantly hanging over them. So of course, when Heather decides she wants her old life back, trouble abounds for Cohen and Jamie. Will Jamie step away from what — and who — makes her happy because of her sister?

Cohen is the owner of the Twisted Fox bar, and the rest of this series will follow the folks who work there. I am so excited to read Asher and Georgia’s story next!

“Helena Hunting delivers a smart, funny, emotional story that grabs you from page one.”

— Ilsa Madden-Mills, Wall Street Journal bestselling author

A Secret for a Secret, an all-new must read forbidden standalone romance that is sure to have you swooning from the start by New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting, is available now!

Hunting-A Secret for a Secret-28672-PB-FT.jpg

From New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting comes a new romance about trading secrets, breaking the rules, and playing for keeps.

My name is Ryan Kingston, and I’m a rule follower. I’ve never been in a fistfight. I always obey the speed limit. I don’t get drunk, and I definitely don’t pick up random women at bars.

Except the night I found out that my whole existence has been a lie.

I got drunk. And picked up a stranger.

Her name was Queenie, and she was everything I’m not: reckless, impulsive, and chaotic. We did shots and traded secrets. And ended up naked at my place.

She left me a thank-you note in the morning and her panties as a parting gift. But no way to contact her.

Six weeks later I’m sitting in the first official team meeting of the season, and there she is. I neglected to mention that I’m the goalie for Seattle’s NHL team.

And Queenie? Turns out she’s the general manager’s daughter.

Excerpt:

“You think our GM got himself an assistant?”

I follow his gaze to the front of the room. Standing at the desk with her back to us, arranging papers, is a woman with wavy chestnut hair that nearly reaches her waist. “Maybe an intern?”

She’s wearing a navy dress that conforms to her very feminine form. I trace the dip of her waist and the curve of her hip, skimming down to where the hem of her dress hits the bend in her knee. Her calves are bare, athletic, and toned, and her heels boast a little bow on the back. Classy, yet sexy. “Possibly.”

“I hope the eye candy is gonna be permanent,” someone at the table behind us says, loud enough for everyone close by to hear.

“I wouldn’t mind if she helped me with my jockstrap,” one of the other guys chimes in, eliciting a loud chuckle from the rest of the table.

I glance over my shoulder and pin them with an unimpressed glare. I recognize Foley from Tampa, and Dickerson is an LA trade. They’re notorious womanizers. “Watch your mouth and have some respect. That’s someone’s daughter.”

“Take it easy, King. It’s not like we’d actually say that to her face,” Foley says.

I don’t have an opportunity to reprimand him further because the GM, Jake Masterson, and our head coach, Alex Waters, enter the room through the side door. The GM crosses over to the woman, whose back is still turned to us, and he gives her a smile that seems . . . overly warm. He leans in and squeezes her shoulder as he says something with his mouth close to her ear.

“Maybe she’s not his assistant. Maybe she’s his new girlfriend, ’cause that looks pretty damn friendly to me.” Bishop jams a sausage link into his mouth.

“Maybe,” I agree.

She turns slightly, giving me a glimpse of her profile. Her cheeks are flushed pink. I blink a couple of times, because she seems incredibly familiar.

“I think I know her,” I mumble, more to myself than to Bishop.

“Not as well as our GM does, by the look of things.”

It hits me like a puck in the chest without pads on. I do know her. Queenie. My one-night stand who bailed the next morning and left a Post-it and panties hanging from my doorknob. Destroyed panties. “Oh God.”

Did I sleep with the GM’s girlfriend? Memories come barreling into my brain, and I want to sink into the floor. My behavior that night was highly atypical. Everything about that night was. I chalked it up to the alcohol, the family drama, and the fact that she seemed to be a very eager and willing participant in our adventures. Do not think about the things you did to her.

I’d be lying if I said I haven’t thought about Queenie and our night together. I’ve even considered driving by the bar where we met, but I don’t know if she’s likely to show up there. And it’s not as if I can ask the bartender about her without looking like a creep. Besides, if she wanted me to have her number, she would’ve left it.

“Are you okay? You look like you’re about to hurl,” Bishop asks.

I cover my mouth with my palm, not because I’m going to be ill but to hide the fact that it’s hanging open and I can’t seem to close it. Although my stomach is starting to do those awful somersaults that will soon turn into full-on nausea. The kind I used to get when I’d first hit the ice for a game.

This is bad. Really bad. I’ve never had a one-night stand before. I’ve always been in committed relationships, and I prefer to get to know my bed partners before they actually get into bed with me. Teen pregnancy was pretty common where I grew up in Tennessee, because there wasn’t much else to do apart from playing sports or getting into trouble with drugs and alcohol—my brother, Gerald, went the latter route. I obviously fit into the sports category. By the time I became a teenager, my parents had finally learned their lesson. It was drilled into me to never become that kind of statistic, or to turn my girlfriend into a mom before she was ready to take on more than senior-level algebra.

Ironic how my actual mother would’ve been one of those girls had my grandparents not made the choices they had.

“King?” Bishop nudges me. “You’re staring, man.”

Jake whistles with his fingers, causing the woman beside him to cringe but then quickly school her expression into an uncertain smile. “Who’s ready for a new season?”

He’s rewarded with a chorus of cheers from the players. Waters stands off to the side, clapping enthusiastically. He generally runs all team meetings, but Jake is a hands-on GM, so he always manages first meeting intros before he hands it over to our coach.

Jake waits for everyone to settle down and take their seats before he continues. “Gentlemen, I’d like to introduce you to my personal assistant, Queenie.” He throws his arm over her shoulder and pulls her into his side.

A hot spike of anger rushes down my spine—it’s a foreign feeling. I’m usually very level headed. But not right now. It’s obvious by the way Jake and Queenie interact that there’s a relationship there. Is she a cheater? Did she make me one? There’s a definite age gap. He’s young for a GM, but he’s in his forties, and I’m pretty sure she’s in her mid twenties.

“She also happens to be my daughter, so don’t get any ideas, boys.” He somehow manages to wink and glare at the same time.

And it just went from bad to worse.

My one-night stand isn’t my GM’s girlfriend; she’s his daughter.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

A Secret For A Secret may be my favorite book yet in Helena Hunting’s All In series! I love how Ryan Kingston and Queenie balance each other out. She’s a bit of a wild child; he is hockey’s rule-following good boy. But when he lets loose one night while out drinking, he meets his match in Queenie and has an out-of-character one night stand. But there’s so much more to the night they shared; they connected deeply and found it easy to share secrets with the other. After all, they never expected to see one another again.

So when their paths cross again a few weeks later and King discovers that she is the daughter of his general manager, they agree to just remain friends. But the attraction between them is still there, and it’s only growing stronger. But since King is such a rule-follower, will he follow his heart despite the GM’s demands that the players stay away from his daughter?

Ryan Kingston is a sweetheart. Sweet, sensitive, and one of a kind. He isn’t the growly, strongheaded kind of hero, and I think that is why he was so darn charming. He goes all out when it comes to Queenie. I mean, he kind of HAS to, so the King and his Queenie end up together in the end!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Blurb:

Have you ever hit rock bottom?

I embarrassingly have.

It’s why I’m wearing my girl’s decorative scarf over my head, clutching her lady drink to my chest, and singing ever so softly to Joni Mitchell while swaying back and forth.

This is what therapists refer to as LOSING IT.

Oldest story in the book: boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy screws up MASSIVELY, girl tells boy to suffocate in the fruits of his very own unborn children.

Heard it before? I’m sure you have.

So what’s so different about this story? Well, it’s about me, The Modern Gentleman, New York City’s top advice columnist, and my rather ungraceful downfall from my pristinely polished pedestal.

It’s about a girl I met who threw all my proven theories to the wind and left me awkward, needy, and absolutely head-over-wingtipped shoes in love.

This is a story about June Lacy and how she single-handedly dismantled The Modern Gentleman.

PROLOGUE

Dear Gents,

See that remote in your hand? Yeah, the one that’s covered in pizza sauce and last night’s Buffalo wings? I want you to take a good look at it. Do you have it memorized? Good, now bend at the waist, set it on the coffee table, and stand up. Don’t you dare look at that remote again, don’t even glance at it. And the Xbox that’s calling your name, go ahead and forget about that as well, because guess what? You’re starting a new journey and it doesn’t include television, video games, or high-fiving over a bubbly belch from the bowels of your intestinal tract. Forget everything you’ve ever known about being a man, forget the hall passes you have for being a man, and forget every natural instinct you carry inside your bones. Because I’m here to refine you, replenish your knowledge on the male species, and turn you into a modern gentleman: a well-respected, polished, and confident individual with an epic sex appeal and killer style that will woo any female with a simple flash of your honest charm.

Stick with me, gents. I’m starting a revolution and it begins with you.

Sincerely,

The Modern Gentleman

Their meet-cute starts with a steaming pile of dog poo and their first date ends him in the ER after a gnarly shuffleboard game gone wrong. That is all you need to know about the wonderment that is Wes and June in The Modern Gentleman. This book had me in stitches. Every time I thought a situation for poor Wes couldn’t get any worse, it did. Okay, seriously — where did Meghan Quinn come up with the ideas for the awful dates that Wes and June go on?

I absolutely adored how June took suave, sophisticated Wes and turned him into a bumbling fool. For a guy who authors an advice column, it is absolutely brilliant that none of his tricks work on June herself. So of course you just know things are going to blow up in his face since he’s kept the true nature of his work from her. (Heck, Wes says as much in the prologue as he then flashes back to their relationship and how it fell apart.)

This story is told mostly through Wes’ POV, with a few instances where June hysterically hijacks the story to tell her side of things. June really is one of a kind, unlike any other heroine I’ve seen before. She’s quirky and modest, and really makes Wes put in the effort to court her. It’s a wonderful build to their relationship, and I loved these characters so, so much!

I need more of Roman. Please, MQ, let this be a start to a new series! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Release Date: May 14

When I met Amber Lakes, I had no idea that she’d become a shining star in my dark, miserable life.

We were never supposed to touch, or kiss, or do so many dirty things on campus that I knew could jeopardize my career…

None of it was supposed to happen because she’s the student—my athlete—and I’m her college track coach.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

This is not your average age-gap forbidden romance. You get all of that with Amber, a college track star, and her coach, Joaquin. But there is so much more to this story with the themes of exclusion and racism. Coach Me is unlike any romance I’ve read before.

From the start, Amber has the deck stacked against her as an African American woman at a predominately white college. As a Mexican, Joaquin knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of cruelty and racist remarks. It’s pushed him harder to become a success, and he recognizes that in Amber. Their connection is so much more than a physical one; it is soul-deep.

Shanora Williams wrote such a rich story, and Amber and Joaquin are such wonderful characters. I would have liked to have seen some more clandestine meetings between Joaquin and Amber to really play into the forbidden aspect of their romance. But this story really opened up my eyes to experiences that POC have that are beyond my wildest imagination. And she does it so well, so delicately, so phenomenally.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Two Of Us, by Kennedy Fox

What do you do when the entire nation is on lockdown
If you’re an heiress to a billion-dollar fashion company, then you quarantine in a glamorous cabin and finish your final semester of NYU online. The best way to focus on her upcoming valedictorian honor is away from her family, classmates, and the paparazzi. Cameron St. James is ready to get out of the big city and head Upstate for seclusion, despite her parents’ pleas to stay home.

What do you do when a pandemic is sweeping the world?
If you’re barely making ends meet, then you isolate yourself in your best friend’s mountain cabin with breathtaking views and no neighbors for miles. It’s the perfect safe place away from three roommates who don’t take the life-threatening epidemic seriously. Elijah Ross is ready to work remotely and focus on his next big promotion, assuming he’ll still have a job after this.

What happens when things don’t go as planned, and you’re stuck with the one person you dislike the most?
You improvise and do whatever it takes to avoid each other, though it proves to be impossible. The cold evenings alone turn into movie and popcorn nights together by the fireplace. Days turn into weeks, and eventually, more than just a friendship blossoms. As the unknown haunts them, they lean on one another for comfort—until someone pops their safety bubble and threatens everything.
The Two of Us is an enemies to lovers, brother’s best friend standalone romance set in the current affairs of history in the making. Though the character’s storyline is fiction, the circumstances are very real, and we’re sensitive to this topic. This is a story about hope, love, and so much more with a guaranteed happily ever after!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Kennedy Fox knocked it out of the park with Just The Two Of Us. A brothers-best-friend romance set against the backdrop of the current COVID-19 pandemic, Cami and Eli find themselves accidentally quarantined together at her family’s mountain cabin. And of course, they can’t stand one another. At first.

With literally no where else to go, Cami and Eli learn that there is more to the other than what meets the eye. She’s not just the spoiled princess that he thinks she is, and he turns out to have a real soft spot when it comes to her. Their chemistry is hot, and there is so much build-up Thad they explode once they finally come together.

But at the same time that Kennedy Fox are telling this sexy love story, they also are exploring the global pandemic currently happening around us. The anxiety and helplessness, and seeing what Cami’s brother/Eli’s best friend Ryan goes through as a front line worker — it’s written beautifully and a true time capsule of our current state of affairs.

I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series!

Excerpt:

My phone buzzed in my pocket, and I stood to pull it out. My brother’s name flashed on the screen, and I winced. My finger hovered for a count of three before I hit accept. “Hey, Hunter. What’s up?”

“You need to come home.”

My blood turned to ice. “Dad?” My voice grew hoarse on the single word. Memories of the call I’d gotten from my hysterical mother, telling me that my father had suffered a stroke, flooded me.

“He’s okay. The same. But I need you to help out at the bar.”

I eased back in the chair, my gut souring. “I can float the bar some money to hire more permanent help.”

“What the fuck is wrong with you, Ford? This is your family’s legacy. The Catch has been run by a Hardy for generations. We don’t need your fancy Hollywood money, we need you. Or are you too good for your family now, too?”

I gripped the arm of my chair, the sleek metal frame biting into my palm. “You know that’s not why I left.”

Hunter blew out a long breath. “You were never going to be able to avoid this place forever. Mom and Dad miss you, and I can’t keep covering for your ass.”

“I see Mom and Dad plenty.” It was true. I regularly flew them out to LA or some other place they’d been dying to visit, but I hadn’t set foot on the island in years. Shit, it had been over a decade now, eleven years. At first, my parents hadn’t minded. They’d understood. And they’d gotten a kick out of seeing new and exciting places. But over the years, I’d seen the sadness, the disappointment.

“They need their sons. Both of us. I’ve been trying to run the bar and my construction business at the same time, and I just can’t do it anymore. They’re both suffering. It’s time for you to step up.”

A vise tightened around my rib cage. “I can’t.”

Hunter was silent for a few moments. “If you don’t come home, we’re going to have to sell.”

His words seemed to slice at my chest. I hadn’t seen the bar in what felt like forever, but somehow, the idea of losing it, letting go of something else that felt like it was a part of me, was more than I could take. “Okay.”

“Okay?” There was shock in my brother’s voice. Maybe he’d expected me to tell them to sell, but I couldn’t. Because he was right. The Catch was our family’s legacy. I wasn’t going to let them down because I couldn’t deal with the ghosts of my past.

“Yeah, okay. I need a couple of days to close up shop here and get a manager in place at my LA bars. But I’ll be there soon.”

Hunter cleared his throat. “Thanks, man.”

The words seemed to be dragged out of him. And didn’t that make me feel like an asshole? When had things gotten so strained with my brother that thanking me was akin to pulling teeth? “Thank you for all you’ve been doing. I’m sorry I haven’t been pulling my weight.”

“You covered all the medical bills, that helped a lot.”

I heard the unspoken words, “but you haven’t been here.” God, I was a selfish prick. Sure, I’d spent a month in Seattle with my parents when my dad was in the hospital and then a rehab clinic, but as soon as they’d returned to the island, I’d run straight back to LA like the coward I was. I couldn’t pull that this time. I’d just have to hope that I could get the bar back on its feet quickly.

“I won’t leave the hands-on stuff to you anymore, Hunt.” I’d get the pieces we needed in place before I came back to LA so there wasn’t such a heavy load on my brother’s shoulders.

“It’d be a nice change,” he grumbled.

Shit. I had a lot to make up for with my brother. “I’ll see you in a few days.”

“In a few days.”

Hunter hung up without a goodbye, and I let my phone clatter to my desk. A few days. Seventy-two hours to wrap up my life in LA. Four thousand, three hundred, and twenty minutes before I had to face a daily reminder of the cruelest truth. I’d killed the one person I should’ve protected above all others.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Reckless Memories is a killer start to a new series by Catherine Cowles. It’s full of angst, hurt, insecruity, guilt, and most importantly, healing.

Eleven years ago, Isabell and Ford survived a car accident that killed her sister/his girlfriend, Violet. Not only was Bell left physically scarred, but emotionally scarred as well. And she felt abandoned by Ford, who felt so guilty about driving the car that rainy night that he left town. When Ford’s brother calls him home to help save the family restaurant (which Bell now manages), both of them are forced to face the ghosts of their past while trying to rebuild their friendship with a clean slate.

While Bell has always been in love with Ford, she now feels incredibly guilty for the feelings she has for her dead sister’s boyfriend. And the more time he spends with a grown-up Bell, the more Ford realizes that she knew him even better than Violet did, and he reflects on all of their teenage experiences with a different perspective.

It takes a long time for Bell to get over the hurt she feels by Ford’s disappearance in her life. And when Ford admits that he feels the same way for her, is a romantic relationship worth the scrutiny of the small-town gossip mill? Will she always feel like she’s in her sister’s shadow? Is Ford with Bell because he really wants to be with her, or out of care and concern?

I really liked the way Catherine Cowles wrote the perspective of both characters, and how Bell’s manipulative parents played a huge part in the breakdown of their friendship. There’s also a bit of a mystery involved as Bell keeps receiving “presents” and reminders of her late sister, and the twist of who the attacker actually was blew me away.

In the end, Reckless Memories was a book that broke my heart in so many ways, but it is also so full of hope as Bell and Ford carve out their own path to happiness. I loved getting to know the rest of the gang, and can’t wait to see what comes next for this crew in the rest of the series.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: That’s The Way I Loved You, by Carrie Aarons

Release Banner

That’s The Way I Loved You by Carrie Aarons is AVAILABLE NOW!

Savannah

This town ain’t big enough for the two of us.
Which is why I left.

I was determined never to return to Hale, Texas. But when my new life in the Big Apple throws me a curve ball, I have to go back to tie up loose ends. One of those being him.

Jason Whitney was my first everything. Kiss, love, epic heartbreak. He shattered my world once upon a time, and apparently, he’s not done yet.

With old demons lurking around every corner, hightailing it out of my hometown is at the top of my list. Complete my unfinished business, and I get to leave any memory of my country existence behind.

Only, with each day I spend in it, with each moment I spend with him, I’m turning back into the girl who laid in the tall grass and swam in the creek all those years ago.

And I’m not sure that who I was is ready to let me go again.

Jason

We drew a line down the middle, and neither of us has crossed it.
That is, until Savannah Reese blew back into our hometown.

The day my high school sweetheart left, she took my whole heart with her. We promised each other forever, made plans that only teenagers could believe in, and crashed and burned on the grandest of scales.

When Savannah last saw me, I was a disgraced high school athlete. All washed up, I took it out on the only person who loved me. Then her world really fell apart, and I was too selfish to care.

Now she’s back, ready to sell the only remaining thing tying us to each other. I’ve been breaking my back for the last ten years not to think about her, not to be reminded of the love we shared.

But now that she’s right here, it’s impossible to forget how we used to be. Or let go of what we still are.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I love that Carrie Aarons was inspired by one of my favorite movies, Sweet Home Alabama, when it came to writing Jason and Savannah’s story in That’s The Way I Loved You. If you are a fan of the movie, you can clearly see the correlations, but it’s full of Carrie Aarons goodness.

After her life in small-town Texas imploded, Savannah took off for New York City and never looked back. Leaving behind her family and her boyfriend, she built a new life for herself and compartmentalized all the hurt and grief and sadness. Ten years later, Savannah and her businessman beau are looking to buy a swanky Manhattan apartment — but she’s got a black mark on her credit since Jason never sold the tiny cabin they’d bought together.

When she heads back home to Texas to settle things up with Jason, Savannah is forced to face all that she ran from. Her siblings have kids she doesn’t even know. Her old friends have lived lives she knows nothing about. Jason is nothing like the man she left behind who was grieving a career-ending injury. And as much as Savannah wanted distance between herself and all of that, she can’t help but feel a sense of peace in visiting her roots.

I loved the tension between Jason and Savannah when she first arrives back in town. I love that he’s still been in love with her all of this time, and even her family is rooting for them to get back together. CA does a great job of exploring a new relationship between who these characters are now.

That’s The Way I Loved You, from start to finish, was perfection. Jason never gave up on Savannah being his soul mate, and little by little, showed her how they still belong together. There were a few kisses that they share before she eventually ends things with Perry, but it was so clear to me that Jason was the one she belonged with.

That’s The Way I Loved You is full of swoony, sweet moments. It’s a heartfelt second-chance romance that you will keep coming back to! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Author of romance novels such as The Tenth Girl and Privileged, Carrie Aarons writes books that are just as swoon-worthy as they are sarcastic. A former journalist, she prefers the love stories of her imagination, and the athleisure dress code, much better.

When she isn’t writing, Carrie is busy binging reality TV, having a love/hate relationship with cardio, and trying not to burn dinner. She’s a Jersey girl living in Texas with her husband, daughter and furry son.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

He’s a former football pro turned sports agent. She’s his sexy assistant. Aside from one kiss that they never spoke about, Austin and Quinn have kept their relationship strictly professional…. until a baby arrives on his doorstep and he calls Quinn for help. As she steps into the role of pseudo-nanny for baby Jenny, Austin and Quinn find themselves playing house… and feeling a lot like a family. She’s never wanted kids of her own, but is this hot single dad too much to resist?

This book was a binge read for me; I read it in an afternoon. Austin and Quinn are likable and relatable as characters, and they way they kind of fall into a relationship of convenience was organic.

I’m not a fan of third-person dual POV because I find it hard to keep track of whose side I’m reading, but that seems to be Carly Phillips’ writing style. Aside from that personal preference, I enjoyed this story very much. Austin and Quinn sizzled when they needed to, were sweet when they needed to be, and fell in love while falling in love with sweet baby Jenny.

Dare To Resist is the first book in another spinoff series of Carly Phillips’ popular OG Dare series. I have never read any of those books, but Austin is apparently the biological kid of Paul Dare and is the cousin of Ian Dare and others. There are some appearances of Dare family members, which are nice winks for CP’s fans. And since Austin and his sister work at the Dare Nation sports agency where his pro athlete brothers are clients, I imagine these siblings are the focus of this Dare Nation series.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
