Sunny Shelly’s Review: Layla, by Colleen Hoover

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover comes a novel that explores life after tragedy and the enduring spirit of love.

When Leeds meets Layla, he’s convinced he’ll spend the rest of his life with her—until an unexpected attack leaves Layla fighting for her life. After weeks in the hospital, Layla recovers physically, but the emotional and mental scarring has altered the woman Leeds fell in love with. In order to put their relationship back on track, Leeds whisks Layla away to the bed-and-breakfast where they first met. Once they arrive, Layla’s behavior takes a bizarre turn. And that’s just one of many inexplicable occurrences.

Feeling distant from Layla, Leeds soon finds solace in Willow—another guest of the B&B with whom he forms a connection through their shared concerns. As his curiosity for Willow grows, his decision to help her find answers puts him in direct conflict with Layla’s well-being. Leeds soon realizes he has to make a choice because he can’t help both of them. But if he makes the wrong choice, it could be detrimental for all of them.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

I’ve read and loved several CoHo books over the years. I think she is brilliant when it comes to writing contemporary romance. Paranormal romance isn’t my jam, but I figured it was Colleen Hoover… why not? Well, Layla was a bit of a disappointment.

Layla is a twisted, twisted story between Layla and Leeds, his obsessive ex and a ghost. I had a hard time connecting with Leeds from the start. Then he completely lost me once he and Layla go back to the B&B and Willow gets involved. It just wasn’t working for me. He was trying to reconnect with Layla, but he’s falling for this ghost?

This story was interesting and twisted, and once the big reveal is made, things kind of click into place. But even then, I just didn’t like Leeds and his actions. That said… the conclusion is quite captivating, and I think the epilogue was my favorite part of the story. The book is well-written and CoHo does a great job with telling Leeds and Layla’s story…. it just wasn’t my jam. I took a chance and ultimately, I didn’t love it.

I received an advanced copy from Montlake via NetGalley and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Another masterpiece by Shari J. Ryan!

This book is not your typical romance. It’s gut-wrenching and emotional and raw and inspiring and scary and happy.

I love when August says she’s not suffering from addiction, but suffering *from* addiction — being Keegan’s caretaker took everything out of her, and even though their relationship had devolved into them being roommates (at least on her part) at the end, she’s carrying so much guilt because of it. Chance sees a fellow damaged soul, another wounded bird, when August sidles up next to him on that barstool. She saves him from a lifetime of loneliness, and he saves her from further downward spiraling.

Without saying any more… Fall To Pieces if phenomenal. The ending of this book is so damn sweet, and is a magnificent HEA for these two characters who were just shattered pieces before becoming whole thanks to the love of the other.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: No Commitment, by Lisa Suzanne

 Release Date: December 10

No commitment.

That was my deal with Tyler from the start, at least until his tour was over and we could be together. But thirty days filming a reality show here, two years overseas with his band there…

Is it really any wonder why I didn’t tell him about the baby?

He comes looking for me once he’s back in the country, but he runs into the man I married instead. Eventually I agree to meet him so I can put the past truly behind me. When I see him, though, every feeling I held inside comes rushing back.

My husband and I vowed to raise this baby together. But as I find myself drifting away from the husband who stole my job and gravitating toward the rock star who stole my heart, I realize he deserves the truth.

I just have no idea how this rock star who doesn’t make commitments is going to react to the fact that he’s a father.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Holy Moly. Another fantastic love triangle from Lisa Suzanne.

We first met Tyler in The Replacement War, and No Commitment starts just as he’s about to go into the house to film the reality show. That career decision doesn’t sit well with Danielle, who has been waiting for his tour to end to tell him that she’s pregnant. Knowing that telling him about the baby would be a bad move at that moment one way or the other, she keeps quiet and blocks Tyler’s number.

Two years later, Tyler is finally has a few days to track Dani down and tell her that he’s madly in love with her… and gets the shock of his life to find out that she’d gotten married. What happens next is a rollercoaster of emotions for both of them. Disappointment, yearning, regret, heartache, love, loss… it’s just so much! And that’s before Tyler even finds out that he’s a father!

This book is all kinds of angst. I get why Danielle felt such loyalty to Ford, but she had always been honest with him abut her feelings for Tyler. She is faced with an impossible choice, and she’s going to hurt one of them.

No Commitment was brilliantly written. It had me on the edge of my seat, anxiously reading chapter after chapter to see where this story was going to go! We also got to know the other Capital Kingsman band members, as this is a series starter for their books.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Floored, by Karla Sorensen

Title: Floored

Author: Karla Sorensen
Genre: Sports Romance
Release Date: December 9, 2020
Cover Design: Najla Qamber Designs

If you’ve ever had a steamy one-night stand with a British football player and then find yourself pregnant with his baby, you know how Lia Ward feels.
To be fair, Lia didn’t know who Jude McAllister was when they met.
Studying abroad for her master’s program, all she knows is that she’s a little lonely and he’s very charming, even as they have an epically sexy argument about which type of football is superior.
In Jude’s mind, shagging the feisty American girl is exactly what he needs. He’s been fighting the clock of his long-standing football career and the younger players primed to take his position. Proving that he can feel like his old self again—something he’s been trying to do with everyone in his life—should be easier after blowing off steam with Lia.
But oh baby, when a plus sign pops up on Lia’s pregnancy test, that ‘one night’ becomes a whole lot more.
Now Lia and Jude have to navigate their impossible-to-ignore chemistry, and prepare for the parenting game, something neither of them know how to play.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Another great story from Karla Sorensen! Seriously, when is it not? Floored is another Ward Sisters book, and this time we have Lia, the wild twin, overseas in London studying for a semester. Since she’s American, she has no clue that the hot, tatted guy she’s flirting with is one of Britain’s great football stars.

Both Lia and Jude are feeling a little down on their luck when they meet in the pub that afternoon. One thing leads to another… leads to another… and leads to a surprise baby. Oops! The majority of this story is how Jude and Lia navigate becoming parents-to-be amid their cultural differences, geographical differences, and boatload of emotional baggage that they are each carting around. It’s done brilliantly, and I was shipping this couple so hard.

I love, love, love the soccer vs. football conversations between Jude and Lia. Especially since Lia’s brother Logan was one of America’s great football stars. We get lots of crazy from the Ward family in Floored, and I loved catching up with the crazy clan. Bring on Isabel’s story!

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

I’ve been in love with her for two years.

The first time around I screwed things up. I hesitated and the moment was gone.

I passed when I shouldn’t have.

Not a total loss. I gained a best friend instead of whatever we might have been.

Sydney is hands down the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’ll do anything to keep her in my life. Even bury my feelings deep inside.

But one hot summer together at the lake filled with lots of teeny-tiny bikinis and I’m ready to risk it all for a second chance.

It’s time to take my shot.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Go back to Valley U for Shaw’s story!

Sydney and Tanner (I never even knew that was Shaw’s name!) are best friends. They try to date, but Tanner kind of missed his chance and then got friend-zoned. He’s been totally hung up on Sydney from the start, and there is definitely sexual chemistry between them, but they decide that they are better off as friends.

Until everything changes at the lakehouse. (BTW, I love that the major setting of this book is not at the college itself, but at the lake! Gives this installment a fresh spin!)

This book is swoony and sweet. Tanner is quite the charmer! And I love the flip on this second-chance/unrequited love romance, where the hero is the one all hung up on the girl rather than vice versa. And there is a history between Sydney and Shaw that comes into play brilliantly, so we really get that they know each other so, so well.

Probably.

According to his endless spreadsheets, bloody definitely.

That’s not the goal of the pub renovation reality show he produces, but the truth is, his job depends on him getting his project done, on time and on budget. Even though the village isn’t big enough to sustain two pubs and Stefan knows it.

Lucy Maclaren knows it, too. She told him that at the Jingle Ball. Right before that kiss he hasn’t been able to forget. The one he desperately wants to repeat.

How is he supposed to do his job when he’s more worried about his so-called rival? Worse, how is he ever going to win her heart when the only thing she wants to see is his backside leaving town – preferably as soon as possible?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

A small British village. Two rivals. A kiss he can’t forget. The woman who wishes he would just leave her the hell alone. Rival Hearts is a cute, swoony enemies-to-lovers romance.

Lucy and Stefan shared a kiss a year ago, and he hasn’t been able to get her out of his mind. Now his reality show has him rehabbing a pub across the street from hers in a small village that really doesn’t need two watering holes. Between their bickering and personal jabs are plenty of heated looks and a sizzling attraction. But can they find a common ground or will one of them have to give up their dream?

I really liked Lucy and Stefan as romantic leads. She’s feisty and takes no BS. He’s Britain’s most eligible bachelor who has dated around, but he’s got a soft spot for Lucy and when he falls for her, he falls hard. This story is executed well, with witty banter, lots of laugh-out-loud moments and two really adorable characters that I couldn’t help but root for. This would make a great Hallmark movie! It seems like this is the start to a new series, and I look forward to what comes next!

Meet Brenda St John Brown

Hi. I’m Brenda.  I’m a displaced New Yorker living in the UK. I lived in London for almost six years, but now I’m living in The North, in a tiny English village. We used to have sheep in our backyard! (Sheep!!)  Now we have a new housing development, so I mostly avoid looking out the kitchen window.

My novels are unabashedly romantic and run the gamut from angsty feels to make-you-smile swoons. Hitting the USA Today bestseller list has been the highlight of my career so far because – gah – #authorgoals! When I’m not reading or writing, I’m hanging out with The Boy, talking about random things and being overly strict about electronics.

I like running and Doritos, not necessarily in that order. I also like libraries, old churches and Paris. One day I’m going to write a novel set in Paris, which will necessitate lots of trips for “research.”

I’ve always been known as the hopeless romantic … the nice guy … the sweetheart.

Everything in my life supported this persona. My students loved my easy personality. My colleagues admired the way I handled myself in the classroom.

But something was always missing.

Like so many relationships before it, my current attempt at love felt like a dead end. When she gave me an ultimatum, I couldn’t promise to give her what she wanted.

So, she ended it.

Explaining another breakup to my family was the last thing I wanted. But doing it on a luxury yacht at my brother’s wedding lessened the hardship.

I never imagined that trip would change everything… and I certainly wasn’t prepared for him to change everything.

Upside Down is a standalone in AM Madden’s Breaking The Rules series, but I loved the supporting characters so much that I have put the first two books on my TBR list! The books have interconnected characters, and past events are talked about, but I didn’t feel like I was missing out for not having read them.

Cooper is such a likable character. He is truly at a crossroads in his personal life when he attends his brother’s wedding. Immediately upon seeing his sister’s business partner, Ricky, again, sparks fly and they kind of catch Cooper off-guard. But not really: he experimented a bit in college, and always had difficulty fully committing to a girlfriend to take the next step. Ricky is super sweet and patient and supportive as Cooper grapples with the unexpected feelings and how his life is about to change.

AM Madden did a great job in telling this story. The journey that Cooper goes through in discovering his true identity and then coming out is a wonderful arc, from start to finish, and Ricky’s support meant everything. Ricky truly turns Cooper’s world upside down, but it’s a beautiful story of self-discovery with a lot of heart.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Stay For Me, by Corinne Michaels

She’s the girl who might be worth staying for.

Stay For Me by Corinne Michaels is now live!

From New York Times Bestselling author Corinne Michaels comes the final poignant love story in the Arrowood Brothers Series.

Hollywood taught me everything I know about relationships–except how to be in one. As an actor, I became an expert at faking it. Faking that I wasn’t affected by my childhood. Faking that I was okay. Faking that I knew how to save the day, the girl, the whole damn world.

But I’ve always known the truth–I’m no one’s hero.

Until I’m forced to move back to Sugarloaf for six months, and Brenna Allen offers me a chance to prove otherwise. She’s everything I never knew I wanted, but can’t have. Her broken heart, perfect face, and adorable children turn my world upside down. Instead of preparing for my next leading role, I’m directing a middle school play.

All to make her smile.

The more time I spend here, the more I want to stay. Build a life in this town that I swore I’d leave–for her.

But when the world comes crashing down around us, I’m forced to decide if staying for her is the right choice or if leaving is better for the woman I love.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Sigh. I was kind of dreading the Arrowood Brothers series coming to an end, because I have enjoyed this family so much! But Corinne Michaels did a great job with the final installment, Stay For Me! This time, it’s Hollywood action hero Jacob’s turn to spend his 6 months on the family farm in Sugarloaf, PA… He’s planning to do his time and then leave… He never expected to fall for the redheaded widow living in the house adjoining their property.

I loved everything about Jacob and Brenna’s story. I loved the slow burn between them. I loved how patient and sweet Jacob was not only with Brenna as she struggled in moving on after her husband’s death, but in how he interacted with her kids Sebastian and Melanie. (I could just imagine how excited those middle schoolers were to have an action star directing their performance of Grease!) I loved how open and honest they were with one another about where they were each coming from: She’d been second-best to her late husband’s career, he had a high-demand job that constantly kept him in the spotlight and he didn’t want to bring a romantic relationship into that. I loved how they both decided that the other was worth the risk… and I loved the fight that they had before tragedy strikes. It was raw, it was emotional, and it hit them both hard… and the words spoken in anger as well as those that went unsaid weighed heavily on both Jacob and Brenna in the aftermath. Is almost losing what they found in one another enough to make Jacob want to stay in Sugarloaf?

The conclusion of this series was all that I hoped it would be. It was swoony, sweet, and had a wonderful HEA for all of the brothers. And I loved the cameos by Eli Walsh and Noah Frazier from Corinne’s Second Time Around series!

Find out in The Revenge Pact, an all-new emotional and swoon-worthy enemies-to-lovers standalone romance from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills!

River Tate is a god on campus.

An outsider with the face of an angel and a body made for sin.
The only chink in her armor is him, her boyfriend’s frat brother, the football player who hates her.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

The Revenge Pact is the first in a trio of college football romances in a collaboration of standalones between Ilsa Madden-Mills, Meghan Quinn and Adriana Locke. This story is a swoony, sexy, slow-burn, unrequited, best friend’s girlfriend romance!

River Tate may be my fave Ilsa Madden-Mills hero yet! He is so loyal and kind and sweet. He is always doing little things for people out of the goodness of his heart, never expecting anything in return. Which is why he never made a move himself for Anastasia — his fraternity brother, Donovan, said he’d liked her first. Even after she and Donovan break up, River is so hard on himself about his feelings for her, why he should stay away, why he can’t be with her, even though there is CLEARLY sizzling chemistry between them. Things take a turn in River’s favor when, in exchange for Anastasia tutoring him in their Lit class (he is dyslexic and has ADHD), he finds her a guy to have a fling with.

I loved that there was no major drama between River and Anastasia, no big fight or breakup. There is some drama with Donovan, but it’s mostly River’s hang ups in wanting to be a good friend to his frat brother and not break bro code. The relationship between River and Anastasia, once they get there, is easy going. They communicate, they take each other’s feelings into account, and they make each other a priority, which is refreshing to read in college/YA romances.

I adored them! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt

River

“Why is the elevator so slow?” she mutters.

“Tell me three things you’re grateful for,” I say.

She does a double take. “Is this where I’m like your…pet project? Don’t feel sorry for me.”

Rainbow, sorry is the last thing I feel for you.

I want you under me.

Deep and hard.

“How are things with Donovan?” I ask.

Her throat bobs. “I-I can’t talk to you about him. I mean, yeah, um, it…doesn’t feel right, you know, to him.”

Right. He’s her boyfriend and my frat brother.

The door opens and she slips out, her arm brushing against my chest. I follow, sucking down the electricity between us.

She blows out a breath. “I know what this is, why you’re being nice to me—”

“Yeah? Tell me, because I can’t figure it out,” I snap, annoyed she won’t open up while the other side is pissed at myself for asking. “Trust me, I wish I didn’t…” I stop, my jaw clenching.

She stops at the door to class and faces me. “Your paper. I’m sorry I can’t help you, I really am. I love helping others, but I don’t think it’s a good idea for us…” She bites her lip, her gaze avoiding mine. “There’s something about you and me—” She halts and looks down at her feet. “Anyway, I know a few students who tutor athletes. Let me give you their names—”

“No one but you, Anastasia.”

“What? Why?”

Instinct takes over and I back her against the wall, towering over her. I tilt her chin up, and she doesn’t speak or move, just breathing fast, as my hand slides around to her nape. A hum of heat goes through my body as my hands tangle in her hair.

“River…what…” Pink rises on her cheeks as her lashes flutter.

Every time, I’m pushing a little more, the dark side of me winning. Monday. Her apartment. Now.

I could kiss her right now, but it’s wrong, immensely, and I’m being bad, so bad…

She gazes up at me, her eyes flaring, the gold around her pupils darkening. She swallows as goose bumps appear on her neck.

A primal sound builds in my throat.

Anger.

Frustration.

Loyalty.

Dammit. I shouldn’t be this close, shouldn’t touch her—

“I’ll wait.” I grind my teeth and step back.

Her lips part, a small puff of air coming out. She looks at my mouth. “For what?”

The lethal side of me, the one itching to play this game no matter the consequences, tries to take over and speak the truth. I shove it down.

You, I say in my head.

Leaving her there, I sweep past her and go to my seat.

Five fucking rows back.

THE RELATIONSHIP PACT by Adriana Locke
Release Date: December 17th

Synopsis
How hard can it be?

That was the question rolling around Larissa Mason’s mind just before she asked Hollis Hudson to be her fake boyfriend.

It was only supposed to be for five minutes, after all.

Granted, that was also before she felt his hand on the small of her back as he charmed the heck out of her family.

She hadn’t heard his laugh yet either.

And it was definitely before she saw the football god shirtless. Otherwise, she would’ve had an idea of just how hard some things could be.

It turns out that pretending to be in love with a crazily handsome, somewhat enigmatic, and absolutely unforgettable tight end (that has an amazing tight end) is easy.

Reminding herself that just because opposites attract doesn’t mean they’re forever is much harder.

What they have isn’t love—it’s a relationship pact. Right?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Not What I Expected was not what I expected! I figured it would be a typical older woman/younger man age-gap romance, but Elsie’s journey is so much more than that!

Of course, there are plenty of “what am I doing?” moments that she has over the course of her fling with Kael — 12 years her junior and the hot new guy in town who opened a specialty shop across the town square that is threatening to put her own late husband’s business out of business. But while this story starts out as her not knowing what to make of her rival becomes so much more as Kael shows Elsie what it’s like to let go and let loose. That it’s okay to take what she wants out of life to make herself happy, versus doing what is expected of her. That age is just a number. And that taking a leap is scary, but life-changing all at the same time.

Kael and Elsie are wonderful, rich characters, and their journey together was captivating. I loved how worried Elsie was about how the folks in town would react to their being together — her daughter’s reaction was exactly how I thought it would go! And I also loved how Elsie wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. She was feisty and outspoken, told the truth about her late husband in her grief support group even when it wasn’t the polite thing to say.

Although Kael was a little too crunchy-granola, he grew on me as a hero, and I loved how falling for Elsie made him want all the things in a relationship that he never imagined he would.

Sometimes, the best things in life are not what you expected.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
