Excerpt:

Breakfast was supposed to be happening in less than thirty minutes. I couldn’t bail on Vin. He would have taken it personally. I figured filling him in in person would be okay.

I wouldn’t even eat with him. I’d let him know what was going on and tell him he should schedule a flight back home as soon as he wanted to.

I collected my keys and my clutch before I could process my thoughts, but as I climbed into my car and started it up, driving away from our two-story brick home, I realized I wasn’t doing this for Vin’s benefit.

I was doing it for mine.

I wanted to see him again.

I wanted to know what was really going on with him.

I wanted updates on him and Zay. About California, period. I wanted to see if he’d changed at all—or if he was just giving the impression of it to try and win me over again. Not that he could, but he would try.

I knew this was stupid. I should have cancelled, like Lloyd said. By going to meet him—alone—I was asking for something to happen. I was secretly hoping to feel a connection again, but in the heat of the moment, I wasn’t exactly sure what that something was.

I drove with racing thoughts, wondering what I’d say—what I’d do. Do I hug him when I first see him? Do I shake his hand and pretend to be formal? Do I treat him like my future brother-in-law or as my former love?

I had no clue, but, still, I didn’t stop. I kept going until I was pulling into the parking lot of the busy restaurant and parking the car.

I didn’t fully breathe as I climbed out, didn’t stop moving as I walked towards the entrance. I didn’t fill my lungs with air until I saw him standing in the waiting area, wearing a navy blue T-shirt that clung to his firm upper body, dark wash jeans sitting low and snug on his hips, and his hair a beautiful, chaotic mess. The veins bulged on his arms, the very ones I used to have no problem tracing with the tip of my tongue.

My pulse roared.

And then it hit me.

This was exactly what I wanted to feel.

The electricity between us—the fire that could torch anything that stood in its way. I wanted to witness his smoldering eyes drinking me in, like I was the most beautiful woman in the world.

Lloyd had never given me this look. He had never stared for so long, like he would tear my clothes off right where we stood, no matter who was watching.

My throat tightened.

My core clenched.

But I pretended none of it was happening to me as I walked forward to meet him.

My insides
shake as she walks out with a warm breeze only to be replaced by the freezing
chills and the ice cold stare of Jude. He shuts the door behind him, stands
firmly in place and stares me down.

“That
intimidating look may work well on the criminals you pick up; I assure you,
Jude, it will not work on me. Now, what can I help you with?” Yes, I know that Tyson and his friends are
cops. I know everything there is to know about him. He left as planned for the
Army shortly after I left him. He’s a womanizer. Sleeps around, drinks and gets
into fights. He’s angry, bitter and out of control and it all reflects back on
me. I’ve studied the symptoms of a broken
person. I’m one myself.

I know very
little about his time at war. I’m sure some of his anger stems from there. I
feared for his life every day. Kept up with the news and terror weighed on my shoulders
every second he was deployed. I’m so proud of him for what he’s done with his
life. Coming from a young kid with the odds of turning into a criminal stacked
against him to a man of honor. A soldier turned cop. I couldn’t ask for a
better man than him.

I still
haven’t been able to let him go. The man I left lives in the tattered mess of
my heart, and I never stopped praying our lives would have been different, that
fate wouldn’t have snuck up on me and kicked my feet right out from under me. Stole our chance at happiness. I’ve loved Tyson
since the first day I laid my eyes on him. Through time and therapy, I thought I would be able to stop
loving him. That there was no way, love
could be this strong that months, years and a decade later it would still
linger. The precious memories I kept locked away swarmed to the forefront of my
mind the minute I saw him again. Stolen kisses, bodies tangled together. Our hearts so full of promises to one another. I
broke them all. Broke him. Broke me. I’m here to fix it. Somehow.

 I remain calm matching Jude’s gaze while every
cell in my body is a quivering mess. My stomach shifts uneasily and sweat
breaks out at the nape of my neck. But, I will not falter or allow him to see
that his presence is terrifying me.

“When Tyson
first told me it was you I didn’t want to believe it. I prayed for you to
disappear, to crawl back under your rock and stay the hell away from him. Now
after seeing what this is doing to him. I’ve changed my mind. Before I get into
why I think you owe me an explanation as
to what your plans are, I want you to know I’m standing here not trying to
intimidate you. I’m here to tell you if your reasons are not legit. I will
fucking destroy you.” Good luck. You can’t destroy something that’s already

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

I’m recovering from surgery, and read Dane over the course of yesterday, and I still am not sure I’ve gathered myself enough to write this review. Dane is a gut-wrenching, soul-crushing, heartbreaking read about selfishness, self-protection, selflessness… and being caught in a morally gray area. There are definite triggers in this book — I do not think that the description indicates that at all, so reader beware. I LOVE that this book was told solely through Dane’s POV (with the exception of an awesome epilogue) because it really is HIS story. The reader gets to experience all of his emotions, heartbreak, heartache, guilt, happiness, loyalty, confusion and elation in a way that I don’t think would come across in a dual POV book.

I’m going to try my best to review this without giving away spoilers, so here we go. Dane is a wealthy businessman, but his personal life is a bit of a mess. He’s not living life, but merely existing, due to his situation at home. But he doesn’t even realize that until a chance encounter with Eden and the subsequent times that their paths continue to cross.

Because everything happens for a reason.

Good or bad, everything happens for a reason. You may not know why. You may not ever understand why. But everything happens for a reason.

Eden opens up Dane’s eyes in a way that he never could have imagined, forcing him to face just how miserable his honorable intentions have made him. She teaches him to laugh again, live again, experience joy again… And that just increases Dane’s guilt tenfold because of his situation with Gabi. Gabi, who Dane has always put first, ahead of himself. And for the first time ever in his life, Dane finds someone who makes him the priority through his friendship with Eden.

“Anyone looking at me would never know the loneliness that lived inside. The desperation that had carved itself a spot and made a permanent home where my heart used to lay.”

“I hadn’t realized how lonely I was until she stopped paying attention to me and then abruptly stopped. Now I was truly miserable.”

This isn’t a traditional love triangle, and while there are some elements of an emotional affair, I wouldn’t consider what happens between Dane and Eden to be cheating. There is so much tragedy involved for all three characters, but Gabi most of all. My heart just broke for her.

There is so much turmoil before the HEA. But once the characters all get there — and they all get a HEA — it is amazingly perfect.
