Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Laramie Briscoe puts out another heartfelt read with Tank! And I really enjoyed the maturity between the main characters in this second-chance romance as they dealt with their issues and came to a resolution.

Tank is the story of Trevor, Whitney’s brother from Renegade, and the story begins with the car crash in Renegade that nearly killed Trevor. Tank’s ex-girlfriend, Blaze, is one of the medics who responds to the call, and as Trevor fights for his life, she is forced to come to terms with how much she loves him and whether she’s willing to fight to salvage their relationship.

When Blaze moves in with Tank to help him with his recovery, the pair must face their demons, and honestly answer some tough questions about their relationship and the reasons behind their split. It was refreshing to see how Blaze and Tank handle the situation like mature adults, and really take to heart just how delicate life can be and to not take things for granted.

I cannot believe that I didn’t immediately realize that Tucker was Sadie’s ex from Co-Wrecker! That book was one of the best and funniest that I’ve read all year. I fell hard for Sadie and Andrew, but felt kinda bad for her ex, since Tucker clearly was having problems moving on. He came off as a bit desperate in Co-wrecker and unwilling to face the fact that Sadie met someone else.

Which brings us to My Best Friend’s Ex, set about a year after Co-Wrecker. Tucker is still hung up on Sadie, heartbroken over the end of their relationship. While drowning his sorrows at the local bar one night, he runs into one of Sadie’s best friends, Emma (who we also met in Co-wrecker). She is about to be evicted, lonely Tucker lives all by himself in the house he bought for Sadie, and before you can say “girl code,” Sadie’s got herself a place to live. And then the fun begins!

WOW! Meghan Quinn outdid herself with Tucker’s story. He is so lonely and heartbroken and stuck in the past, and Quinn beautifully describes that brokenness. There is a true ease to Tucker and Emma’s friendship, and the way Quinn writes it, the reader is right there as they fall for each other despite their best efforts in a very organic way. One of my biggest pet peeves is when I’m TOLD such is true. I want to READ it, experience it along with the characters. And the reader gets to go on every step of the journey with Tucker and Emma in My Best Friend’s Ex.. I FELT all of Emma’s fears and insecurities right along with her when it came to how Tucker was with Sadie, and if she was nothing more than a distraction for him. And I loved how Tucker slowly comes back to life with Emma as his roommate, without even realizing that he’s developing feelings for her.

My Best Friend’s Ex was absolute perfection!

Remember is so much more than a second-chance romance. After her marriage implodes, Milly is forced to reevaluate who she is, where she came from, and where she wants to go. As she sets out to chart a new course for herself, she crosses paths with her high school love, Dean. The man she never got over. And he never got over her. And while Dean’s reasons for orchestrating their reunion weren’t with the best of intentions, the couple ultimately overcome lots of obstacles in this emotional story to be together, including facing the demons of not only their own pasts, but those of their parents.

This book is the second in a series, and while it is a standalone, there were a few plot holes that I think could have been plugged up better for a reader like me who did not read the first book, Rise (which is the story of Milly’s sister, Addie, and apparently lays out the foundation to their father’s disappearance). I also felt that certain elements towards the end of the story felt rushed just to get to the HEA, but overall, Remember was a solid story that kept me entertained not only in terms of enjoying how Dean helps Milly “remember” who she was and explore her sexual awakening, but with the mystery surrounding her father’s vanishing act as well.

I absolutely adored Mindy as Bri’s best friend in Anaconda. She was so sassy and full of spunk, so I was thrilled to hear that Lauren Landish was giving Mindy her own story.

Generally, the fake relationship trope is not a favorite of mine. Too often, the main characters falling for each other feels forced to me, and by the time they get to The Conflict that makes them realize their feelings for one another are genuine, I don’t feel emotionally invested. But that was not the case with Mr. Fiancé. Yes, this follows the basic formula of a fake relationship pact, but Landish did a great job in showing (as opposed to telling!) the reader how Oliver and Mindy were starting to fall for one another. There are a lot of little moments between the characters that sealed the deal for me, so by the time The Conflict arose and Mindy discovered Oliver’s reasons for agreeing to be her fiancé for a week, I was totally rooting for this couple to just get it together!

Oliver handled the argument in a mature way, and how he goes about wooing Mindy for real was so on point! Mr. Fiancé also had enough of the characters’ friendships with Brie and Gavin (from Anaconda) sprinkled in throughout the storyline that gives the reader an update on that couple without taking away from the story of Mindy and Oliver themselves.

Now, can we please get Roxy and Anthony paired up next???

I grab my phone before I lose my nerve. Dial 911 as I race out of our home, praying the neighbors open the door in time.

“Why, Mommy? Why is he doing this?” Claire’s wide eyes stand out like little moons in the dark.

“Because,” I say as I run across the yard, grass clippings sticking to my bare feet. “I told him he couldn’t anymore.”
