Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Staci Hart absolutely gutted me with A Thousand Letters, and then lifted me up with Bad Penny. This book had the perfect combination of hilarious one-liners, both sexy and sweet moments between Bodie and Penny, and a touch of drama. That meet-cute ice cream scene, and then again later in the bedroom with the ice cream cones? So hot!

Penny was so badly burned by her HS boyfriend, and the drama that’s come from her subsequent attempts at relationships, that she’s instituted a three-date rule. But a chance encounter with an old school friend leads to Penny being willing to let her three-date rule slide, as long as things with Bodie remain easy and uncomplicated. And since Bodie, who always carried a torch for Penny, doesn’t want to miss out on his one chance to have the girl of his dreams, decides to let Penny take the lead, even at the expense of his own feelings.

Bad Penny is a follow-up to Tonic — Penny is one of the tattoo artists who work at the shop. I have Tonic on my TBR list, but did not feel like there were plot holes I was missing out on since I haven’t read that book yet. That is a huge pet peeve of mine, and Staci Hart perfectly executed Bad Penny in a way that it’s a self-contained story with interconnected characters.

Penny is so relatable. She’s a free spirit, gives zero effs, and loves hard. She’s the kind of girl I wish I was when I was single! Bodie, on the other hand, is so sweet, so considerate, a kind soul and a hot surfer math geek! Penny is “a-dick-ted”! (Ha! So many laugh out loud moments!) He perfectly grounds her, and their chemistry just comes jumping off the page.

 

At times I wanted to smack some sense into Penny because Bodie was so perfect for her, but she just couldn’t get out of her own damn mind to see what was standing right in front of her. I felt the back-and-forth between both of them not wanting to bring up their feelings to the other grew a bit tiresome, but the HEA that was in store for Bodie and Penny was worth the wait!

This book left me with so many conflicting emotions. Michelle is in such a tough position in life, and is working hard to change her situation, to provide something better than just an existence for her young daughter, Claire. She keeps running into the same man, David, over and over again in their small town, and even though she’s reluctant to expose anyone (not even her girlfriends) to the drama in her life courtesy of her ex-husband, Michelle eventually accepts that David has been put in her path for a reason and agrees to go out with him.

Michelle’s situation is so relatable. Yes, there are things she could be doing differently to change her situation faster, but the rabbit hole she’s clawing her way out of is just something that you, me, any one of us could easily fall into when one bad decision spirals into out-of-control chaos.

David, meanwhile, has his own cross to bear, and it’s heartbreaking. His life is proof positive that not everything is as it appears. But together, David and Michelle click, balance each other out, and complement one another in the very best of ways.

Back to those conflicting emotions. Inevitably You is a heartwarming story of how two people go from merely survival, existing, to learning to live and love again. Michelle is a damsel in distress, David is the wounded hero who comes to her rescue, and Claire Bear is the adorable moppet that brings them together.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Arresting Stars!

 

I loved Laurelin and Sierra’s last collaboration (P*rn Star), so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Hot Cop. And WOW! They did not disappoint. It’s a sexy romcom, full of dirty talk and lots of sex, so if that isn’t your thing, then keep on going…

Livia wants a baby before she’s 30. Chase just wants in Livia’s pants. They agree to a no-strings-attached temporary relationship so he can get his fill of the sexy librarian he can’t get off of his mind, and she can get her (literal!) fill of him and the baby she so desperately wants. Chase, knowing the danger that goes along with being a police officer, is married to his job and never planned to be a family man. Livia has an obsession with dying and people leaving her, and doesn’t want to get romantically involved. But of course, neither of them expect that strings and feelings will start to attach between them.

 

While there is plenty of playing “find the nightstick” — and in some rather interesting places! — there is also alot of brutally honest moments between Chase and Livia that save this book from just being a sexfest. My one complaint about Hot Cop is that I didn’t think there was enough explanation about WHY Livia is so afraid of people leaving her. Yeah, she never knew her dad, but I didn’t think there was enough there to make her so skittish when it comes to relationships. I wish there was more explanation given as to where this fear of hers stems from. The reader knows why Chase is Officer Good Times, but the motivation for Livia’s swearing off men was a bit too vague.

The plot to Hot Cop is somewhat predictable, but Simone and Paige crafted two complex, strong characters, and supporting characters that added nicely to the story without stealing Chase and Livia’s shadow. (Pop and his “quail hunting” cracked me up!) There’s a real arc in Chase and Livia’s relationship, and the reader is taken along on the journey as they discover things about themselves that they never realized they wanted, and try to navigate this story of their life together.

Hot Cop is the perfect beach read!

Funny, funny, funny! The Last Guy is filled with so many laugh-out-loud moments! It is a smart and sexy office romance with two strong main characters and is a perfect book to read on the beach!

Rebecca is a strong, independent newscaster with the weekend anchor job in her sights. She’s paid her dues and is determined to nab the chair — but her boss thinks she’s aging, could stand to lose a few pounds, and doesn’t think Rebecca is the right fit. With her boss seemingly out to fire her, Rebecca knows she needs to walk a very straight line when it comes to her job… which is why she keeps turning down hotshot former NFL hero-turned-sportscaster Cade. Workplace romances are off-limits in Rebecca’s book. But everything changes after they cross paths in a place they least expect to see the other, and lots of alcohol is involved.

IMM and TL really wrote some great characters here. Not just Rebecca and Cade, but Chass and Trent were awesome sidekicks! I appreciate how dedicated Rebecca is to her job, and Cade really goes the distance to prove that he’s not just after a one night stand with her. The reader is privy to alot of little intimate moments between the two, and that goes a long way IMO when it comes to investing in a couple and wanting to see them get their HEA.

You never know what path life is going to put you on, and the last guy you should ever get involved with just may be the last guy you will ever get involved with!
