I don’t know what love is anymore.

Well, that’s not entirely true, but I’m going to tell you a little secret: I’ve lost the spark.

You know the kind of spark I’m talking about?

Where butterflies take flight in your stomach from two hands innocently colliding. Or catching your breath when you first meet someone attractive. Yeah, that spark.

Except I haven’t felt that feeling in forever; there is nothing left inside of me.

Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem–but I’m a writer on a serious deadline, and my editor is breathing down my neck for a romantic, Nicholas Sparks type love story. No pressure, right?

That’s how I find myself flying across the country to crash a wedding in the name of research, dress and heels stuffed into my small suitcase.

It should be the easiest book research ever. Drinking some free champagne, basking in the love of two strangers, and tapping into my romantic side. That will be a breeze. I’m a pro. I can handle this.

Until I mistakenly end up in the wrong hotel room, naked as the day I was born, with the sexiest human I have ever met staring me down, wondering what I’m doing taking a shower in his bathroom. I don’t think calling it research will get me out of this pickle.

“What brings you to Key West, Beck?”

I feel like that’s a question I should have asked a while ago but with the whole naked hotel room exposure—which I have yet to tell my friends about—and the sweatshirt burial, we haven’t had a real chance to get to know each other. Not that I’m complaining all too much. What I know about Beck so far is that he’s a gentleman and likes to have a good time, even if that means torching a sweatshirt and sending it on it’s way.

There aren’t many people I know who would stand there, hand over heart, talking about the thread count of a sweatshirt while fake crying.

The corner of my lips pull up just from the image of Beck wiping “tears” from his eyes with the back of his index finger.

“Do you want the truth, or do you want a fabricated lie that will cause you to fall madly in love with me?”

Chuckling, I answer, “Both.”

“Fair enough.” Beck pushes his foot against the sand below us, sending the hammock into a relaxing swing. “Want the truth or the lie first?”

“Hmm, how about I guess which is which.”

“Ah, things are about to get exciting.” He chuckles and rubs his hands together. “Okay, reason number one.” He clears his throat. “I’m attending a wedding this coming weekend, a wedding I wasn’t invited to, but my friend begged me to attend because he wanted to bone his wife without children around. It doesn’t make sense, but hey, I’m a good friend so here I am.”

Errr, that’s eerily familiar. I swallow a little harder than expected. There is no way he’s crashing a wedding like me. That’s only something a desperate author does in order to find signs of love again. “Okay, reason number two.”

“My sister is getting married this weekend and I’m giving her away. Our dad passed away a few years ago from a heart attack, and even though we’d been estranged for two years, she asked if I would be a part of her wedding. So here I am.”

Silently he swings us, my mind whirling with what the truth could be. Both stories were told so effortlessly, so he’s either a really good liar, or some kind of con artist. I should be scared. I should go to my hotel room right now, wishing Beck a good night, but I don’t, because I’m intrigued by this man. Behind the good looks and intelligence, there’s something beneath the surface, something dark that makes understandable the age in his weathered eyes.

Because of that, I go with option number two. It seems the most plausible, because who really crashes weddings? Only crazed women with the tendency to sit in a bush with a notepad and pen and take notes while staring at couples and listening in on their conversations.

Research and all, it comes at a high price, like spikey branches to the tush.

“Hmm, I’m going to go with reason number two.”

He nods and says, “I knew you were going to say that, but you’re pretty little self is wrong. I don’t even have a sister.”

Stunned, I prop myself up as best as I can on the loose woven thread of the hammock and stare him down. “You’re here to crash someone’s wedding?”

He winces. “Uh, yeah, kind of.”

“Unbelievable.” I shake my head in disbelief and lie back down.

“Now before you judge me and give me a lecture about RSVPing—”

“I’m not judging you.” I turn toward Beck, the hammock making the shift slightly difficult. “I’m just a little . . . surprised.”

“I don’t plan on eating any food.” He bites his bottom lip. “That’s a lie. I plan on eating a lot, but hey, I’ll bring the party to the dance floor. If anything, I’m bringing them the gift of dance, so you can’t be mad at me for that.”

“I’m not mad.” I laugh, still surprised. “I’m just trying to comprehend this.” Looking him square in the eyes, I say, “I’m here crashing a wedding as well.”

This causes Beck to sit up, his brawny chest straining the fabric of his shirt. He intently studies me, his eyes flitting back and forth until he finally asks, “You’re serious? You’re really crashing a wedding?”

I press my lips together and nod.

A sharp laugh escapes Beck as he lies down on the hammock and sends our swing into more of a frenzied movement. “I’m just going to assume, given our luck of baby puke, naked encounters—”

“I knew you saw boobs.”

“I didn’t see . . . ah hell, what’s the point? I totally saw your tits and fuck, woman, they’re hot.” I blush . . . horrendously, my face heating up along with every vein in my body. “But like I was saying, with our luck, we’re going to the same wedding.”

Clearing my throat, trying to move past the part where Beck just made my nipples harden and pop out like turkey thermometers, I lamely say, “Yeah, that would be our luck.”

“Let me guess, wedding is on Saturday at The Hemingway House.”

Cue another rush of heat to eclipse my body. “The one and only.”

He nods and lies there silently for a second before saying, “So what you’re telling me is that I have a date for the wedding Saturday night.”

Not expecting him to say that, I laugh out loud and for some reason say, “I’m wearing teal, in case you want to match and take couple pictures. You know, might as well do the whole couple thing up, right?”

This garners, a deep, low, rumble of a laugh from Beck. “Thank God I packed grey pants with a white button-down. There won’t be any kind of clashing in those couple photos.”

“Nope, not even in the slightest.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Broken Miles, by Claire Kingsley

28168301_589246154748433_5774370292268807721_n

“What I really wanted was her.”

This trip home would be a hell of a lot easier if she wasn’t here.

Zoe. My ex-wife.

Fixing the broken finances of my family’s winery is a little below my pay grade. But if I don’t help, they might lose their land. The trouble is, she’s everywhere, and I can’t avoid her.

Seeing Zoe again dredges up feelings I’d rather ignore. Hurt. Regret. Desire. So much f***ing desire. She’s sassy and tough, and still the sexiest woman I’ve ever known.

I shouldn’t want her like this.

I let her go once, and I don’t deserve a second chance. But the more time I spend with her, the more I realize what we lost. What we could have again.

It might be crazy, but crazy was always our thing. And this time, I’m not going down without a fight.

**Each book in the Miles Family series ends with a romantic HEA, but there is an ongoing subplot that spans the entire series. Contains explicit language and content.**

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Another brilliant story from the amazing Claire Kingsley, one of my absolute favorite authors. Broken Miles is an amazing tale of rediscovering a love that isn’t really quite lost between divorced couple Zoe and Roland. But what’s more, it’s also about the broken Miles family. I loved the family dynamics and dysfunction just as much as I loved Zoe and Roland’s reconnection.
27972968_587819281557787_5249636785826293292_n

Roland is called back home to lend a hand when his family is about to lose the winery that has been in the family for generations. But going back home doesn’t just mean seeing the siblings and parents he’s not that close with anymore, but also seeing his ex-wife, Zoe, who works as the winery’s event planner. From the tension-filled first hellos to slowly breaking down barriers and striking up a semblance of a friendship again to full-blown giving in to the passion and attraction that they still have for one another, Zoe and Roland were a couple I was rooting for from the start.

28168507_591488394524209_8572271272469968713_n
My favorite part of the book? The “talk” that Zoe and Roland have where they hash out the issues that plagued their marriage and led to their divorce. It was ugly and gritty, but CK didn’t shy away from delving into that — and wrote it so well, I felt like I was watching my friends hammer it out before my very eyes. It was a huge turning point in Zoe and Roland’s relationship and I would not have been able to get behind this couple’s reunion if that conversation had not happened.
28576405_594988997507482_1687958335688781811_n

The supporting players in Broken Miles were just as endearing. CK is off to a great start of a new series…. and I can’t wait to see what comes next for this loveable family. Especially Leo! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

I need a man willing to love me for who I am, despite what size I am. Only finding such a guy is harder than it’s cracked up to be. Afterall, I’m a little clumsy and just a tad outspoken… that is unless I’m in front of a man so good-looking my panties melt. Then I become an absolute weirdo.

Case in point: Vice Salvatore. Stunning. Growly. And also my boss.

Thank God his a**hole attitude put my racing heart at ease and changed my lust to hate.

EXCERPT

It wasn’t until I was sitting in the car watching Drew run toward me that I remembered I hadn’t left the file Vice asked for on his desk. I thumped my palm against my forehead. I’d have to make a trip back to the office. There was no way I would call someone to fix my mistake. Especially, if Kylie found out, I would never hear the end of it.
When the door came open, and Drew was in with his seat belt buckled, I started the car and told him, “One quick pit stop before heading home.”
“Where we going?”
“I have to pop back to the office for a second.”
“Cool, I haven’t seen where you work yet.”
Of course, there had been a reason before. Luckily, I was proud of my new job and the fact I could show it off to my son.
“Will Mr. Vice be there?” he asked eagerly. “Since he couldn’t make it to my last few games, he might come to the one this weekend.” I could hear the hope in his voice. Please let Vice be out so my son won’t feel the disappointment. Drew’s last three games of basketball had been at a loss also. He’d been a little down after it, not that it lasted long, but still, I hated to see him upset in any way, and I had a feeling Vice had only been acting politely when he’d agreed to come watch Drew one time.
“We can certainly see. Though, he is a very busy man.”
I caught his nod and how his mouth dipped. “I know, Mom. Like Dad’s always busy.”
Goddang John for not calling last week or remembering to call him back when Drew had tried to reach out. Drew missed his father and loved getting calls from him. John had been a great dad when he was around, but since his absence, it was like he’d forgotten he ever had a son. It hurt me to watch Drew go through his own pain.
“This is where I work, Drew, and I have to park under here.” I drove into the underground parking garage. “Hey, did I tell you there’s a cafeteria in this building, and they have the best ice cream? Maybe we could get one after I drop a file off.”
Finally, a small smile appeared. “’Kay.”
“Awesome, let’s go.” I grabbed my bag from the passenger seat and climbed out of the car. Drew was already out and bouncing from one foot to the other.
“Are there scary clowns hiding down here?” he asked. That dang clown video a boy from his previous school showed him had Drew scared for months of any dark places.
“No. They’re not real, remember?”
He nodded but clutched my hand tightly as we walked to the elevator. Someone must have just gotten off since it arrived quickly. I told Drew what floor to press. He did and came back to my side then placed his arm around my waist to lean into me. It was moments like those, and many others for that matter, where I wished he wouldn’t grow up. I knew the day would come when he’d be too embarrassed to be seen with his mom or hold my hand, kiss my cheek and hug me when he wanted to.
The doors opened, as did Drew’s mouth. “Wow, Mom, this place is huge.” He stepped off before me and spun in a circle to take it all in.
“It sure is, but come this way, and I’ll show you my desk.” Hand in hand we made our way past Kylie, who seemed surprised I had a little boy with me. She mustn’t have known I had a child. I was sure after I’d told Deidre, it would have been around the office. After all, from what Henley had said, she was a gossiper around the floor.
“This place is cool, Mom,” Drew said as he sat in my swivel chair and spun around and around. Ah, the things that amuse young minds. Maybe if I didn’t have that chair, he wouldn’t be thinking it was as cool.
“I like it too, Drew.” I smiled and grabbed the file near the computer. “I’ll just be a second, then ice cream.”
“’Kay.” He beamed with a spin of the seat.
The steps I took found my heart getting excited, yet my brain wished he wasn’t about. His door was always closed so I couldn’t tell if he was in or not. I knocked anyway, just in case, and when I heard no answer, I sighed in relief, only my belly bottomed out in disappointment.
With a need to get out of there quickly in case he arrived back, I opened the door and stopped dead.
My boss was standing up against the wall with his back to me. If it wasn’t for the feminine hands at his waist, I would have been wondering what he was up to or thought he was going crazy by staring at the wall.
His head turned as I entered, but he didn’t move. His eyes widened in surprise from seeing me. He opened his mouth as if about to speak, but I got in before he could. “Sorry, I just forgot the file.” I waved it in my hand and quickly stepped in further to place it on his desk. Spinning, I made my way back to the door as my heart made nice friends with my feet.
“Adalyn,” he called.
I didn’t pause. “Got to go. Have fun.” Seriously? Have fun? I didn’t give two hoots if he was going to have fun with some floozy in his office.

EXCERPT
<class=”separator” style=”text-align: center;” data-blogger-escaped-style=”clear: both; text-align: center;”>“Sophia.” Jameson stormed toward me, slamming my back against the mattress without warning. He was trembling. His body was grieving, coping, and desperate for comfort.

When his head lifted, pressing our foreheads together, I held my hands around his face. The glow of gold was there; I could see it, faintly, sparkling beyond the damage in his eyes. It was a promise. It was hope.

“We’ll be okay, Jameson,” I whispered, watching his eyes flicker back and forth between my own. “That’s our only option. We’re going to—”

“I’m going to kiss you, Soph.”

“Okay.” And with one touch, one gentle brush of his lips against mine, the lost, frightened girl was given a eulogy. With Jameson’s desperate longing, the greedy pressure against me, I felt Sophia Reid pass, carrying all the pain, all the loss, all of it, away with her.

His kiss was not the gentle, delicate exchange of emotion as all had been… It was new. It was a release; a passionate, promising embrace that burned my skin and moaned with liberation. It was like falling asleep after a long day. It was the first sunlight after a long, dark winter. This kiss was the beginning and end of everything. And, oh, did my heart scream for it.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

I’m really torn on how I feel about Somewhere Bound, Foundlings series book 3. I sucked up Nowhere Girl like there was no tomorrow. I fell in love with Jameson and Sophia and couldn’t wait to see where the story took them. Book #2 felt like a lot of unnecessary filler, but there were some great moments that propelled the story further. I was so anxious to dive into #3… and I finished it feeling a little gypped.

Jameson and Sophia are still as connected as ever, and the events of their pasts have changed their present in a way that no teenager should be forced to deal with. Yet through it all, Jameson remains as protective of Sophia as ever, and she even gets the chance to play protector of him once or twice. But I was expecting more from Somewhere Bound in terms of resolving Jameson and Sophia’s story, and I didn’t get that.

So overall, I give Somewhere Bound 3.5 stars. I think this trilogy easily could have been made a duet, and I was left feeling like the story just ended when there were so many more questions/loose ends that needed further explanation or clarification. That easily could have been taken care of in an epilogue set years later. I suppose the door is open for more to come with Jameson and Sophia, but I didn’t get the tied-up-with-a-bow ending that I expected going into Nowhere Girl knowing that this was a three-book series.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

MEET FIONA KEANE
Fueled by coffee and rainy days, shelves of books consuming her home in the Pacific Northwest, and a vivid imagination, Fiona writes about love because she believes the world needs more of it. She could spend eternity lost in a story, taken into someone’s thoughts while she is left lingering there long after the pages have turned. Fiona works to meld themes in the current world and spin them into stories of longing, determination, and hope. Her characters are relatable and relevant, as they battle their own fictional version of existence.

You know the story.
Boy meets girl, they fall in love, two kids, white picket fence.
This isn’t that story.

This is more like . . .
Man meets woman. Man sleeps with woman.
Man meets another woman, sleeps with her.
And so on. You get the idea.

I own a small boutique hotel in New Orleans, the Kingston. I’ve seen men do some stupid stuff in the name of the woman they love, or at least the woman they love for the night.

That’s not me. I’m always in control. You’d be surprised how much you can get away with on just good manners and a smile. It’s the only way to keep my secrets safely locked away.

And my smile hides a lot. Until her.

She turns me down flat. Playing hard to get is my favorite game. It’s the thrill of the chase.

Only problem is, I think it’s me that’s getting caught.
