Synopsis: From USA Today bestselling author J.L. Berg comes a brand new By the Bay stand-alone novel…

Everything was going according to plan…

After years of working my way up the corporate ladder, it was finally my time to shine. I was about to receive the promotion of a lifetime.

But just like that, my life was destroyed with a single career crushing email.

Now, I am headed back home to North Carolina, under the ruse of an extended vacation to help run the family inn while my sister is on maternity leave. After all, what is family for? Plus, a few days at the beach could definitely help uncomplicate this crazy life of mine.

Enter Aiden Fisher.

Aiden is a guest at my sister’s inn. He’s wicked hot, a huge flirt and has one of the sexiest British accents I’ve ever heard. But beyond all that, I see a darkness in his soul, as if he’s carrying a great weight upon his shoulders.

I find myself pushing back my trip home to Florida in hopes that maybe I’ll look into those hazel brown eyes and finally see truth shining back instead of lies. That maybe he’ll stop running and tell me the truth for once.

But you know what they say about liars? It takes one to know one and I’ve been telling the biggest lie of all – I’ve fallen hopelessly in love with Aiden.

And isn’t that the scariest truth of all?

I’m a California native, who lives in the South – Virginia to be exact. I still prefer sushi to fried chicken, avocados to okra, and I absolutely loathe humidity. I do love watching the seasons change though. My husband and I have been here for over a decade, and I still get giddy like a school girl every time it snows. It’s magical!

I’m married to my high school sweetheart, and we’ve been blessed with two beautiful daughters and two rescue pups I like to call my “coworkers”. I’m obsessed with chocolate, minions, anything Harry Potter and I love to watch re-runs of Friends and Gilmore Girls!

MHOnlyHimBookWrapFB

Sometimes your first love deserves a second chance…

He was my first crush, my first kiss, my first everything.

But I’m not a lovesick teenager anymore, and I’d never let that cocky troublemaker break my heart again.

So when he shows up out of the blue asking me to have dinner with him “for old time’s sake,” I say I will. After all, it’s been twelve years, and I’m stronger and smarter than I was back then.

Except…he still does something to me. He’s got those eyes that make me weak, those hands that drive me wild, and a body I can’t resist—especially once I see the tattoos. It doesn’t take long for our trip down memory lane to go from sweet to sizzling.

We’re just as good together as we were back then—better, even—and I’m willing to give the only man I’ve ever loved another chance.

But he’s got to tell me the truth.

* * *

All I wanted was to see her again. Tell her I’m sorry. Make her smile.

Okay, that’s a lie. I wanted to do more than that—a lot more. But I know she’s better off without me, and I promised myself I’d behave.

Except I’ve never been much good at keeping promises…or my hands to myself when I’m around her.

I can make her laugh, I can make her cry, I can make her body surrender to mine in ways that neither of us could have imagined back then. I can—and I do—love her more than she’ll ever know.

But I can’t tell her the real reason why I’m here.

And I can’t stay.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Art Of Loyalty, by Monique Orgeron

Title: Art of Loyalty
Series: A Stern Family Saga #4
Author: Monique Orgeron
Genre: Contemporary Romance w/ Suspense
Release Date: May 24, 2018

In life there are things that will never leave you and loyalty that can never be broken.

As a boy, Vincent Stern suffered abuse that continues to haunt him long after the physical scars have healed.

His hatred turned into a need for revenge.

That need turned into guilt that would never leave him, creating a darkness in his life, festering and tormenting his mind.

But with all his darkness comes light.

A woman he never even considered, could one day become his home.

Does she possess the ability to save him from himself?

Sometimes life makes decisions for you.

Isn’t it funny how things turn out when life forces your hand?

In tragedy you do things you would never see yourself doing.

Choices had to be made, even if she was too young to make them.

She will never regret those decisions, but she will also never allow herself to dream beyond the life that she has already resigned herself to.

Until one night, her life changes and with it, her heart.

Can they save each other and find the love they both deserve?

Sandra – “Once again, this author has amazed me with her writing skills! Another masterpiece.”

A Woman & Her Books – “This author can make you feel so many emotions ranging from hatred to love, anger to sorrow.”

Carla – “Once again, this amazingly talented author has created a story that will draw you in from beginning to end.”

I’m ready to bring her home, but I find her passed out, sleeping peacefully. “Fuck!”

It takes me about five minutes to find her address. If people only knew how easy it is to find out everything there is about them, it would scare the shit out of most. Once I have her address programmed into my GPS, I start driving her home. Pulling up to her upscale townhouse, I exit the car. Opening the back door, I lay my hands on my hips and take a deep breath looking at her passed out. Now to get her out. I grab her purse first, digging for her keys. Then I walk to her front door, unlocking it and throw her purse on a small table in the entryway. Now, to retrieve sleeping beauty. I pull her into my arms, carrying her into the house. She wakes with her head lying on my chest as I close the door.

“Vin, where are we?”

“You’re home now. Which direction do I go?”

“Oh shit, I fell asleep, didn’t I? You can put me down here, I’ll be fine.”

I look down at her and maybe too roughly demand, “Where?!”

Her eyes get a little bigger, but she points to the stairs, “Second door on the right.”

I carry her to her bedroom and set her on her feet. She instantly takes off her heels and proceeds to remove her skirt. At first, I’m shocked, but then I can’t quit staring. She gives me a knowing look and smiles up at me when she starts to unbutton her blouse.

“Maybe you should wait until I leave to take off your shirt.”

She gives me a devious smile and says, “Why, are you scared? I’m not.”

Now she has me intrigued. “Maybe you should be, you don’t know me.”

“I know all I need to. I’ve heard about you Vin. The girls all say ‘Vin Stern is a man of mystery. The quiet one that watches but doesn’t touch.’ Why is that Vin? Don’t you want to touch?”

Her shirt falls to the floor and she stands there looking like sin. All legs, with a tight body covered in a black lace bra and thong. Perfection. She saunters to her bed.

“You don’t touch, but do you like to watch?”

She lays her body down in the middle of her bed, bending her legs and spreading them wide.

“I saw you watching me tonight. Is that what you’re into? Do you like watching from afar?” She slides her hand down her body and slips into her panties.

“Then watch me Vin. I know you want to.”

She looks directly at me and says in a low sultry voice, “I want you to.”

I’m frozen. I know this is wrong, I shouldn’t be here. She’s drunk and even if she weren’t, she’s Gabriel’s. Well not his, but she has been with him through the years as a regular. It’s wrong ten different ways but I can’t turn away. I continue to watch as her fingers pull her thong away to put her bare pussy further on display. She works her fingers over her sex just like she likes it and I study every movement. I watch as her fingers penetrate and how she glistens. The sounds of her moans are getting breathy, heightened in desire. Her hips raise off the bed as her fingers slide deeper inside her. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever witnessed. I couldn’t walk out that door if my life depended on it.

“You like this Vin? Do you like watching me pleasure myself? I’m going to cum so hard for you, baby.”

Her head falls back as she makes herself cum. I watch with fascination as her body writhes in pleasure. Once her body has come down from ecstasy, she looks back up at me with a smile from ear to ear.

“Was it good for you?”

I walk up to her and grab her hard by the back of her neck, pulling her up to my face. “Don’t fuck with me! You don’t know what lies beneath!”

With her still in my grasp, I grab her hand and suck her fingers into my mouth, tasting how sweet she really is.

I release her and start walking out of the room. I hear her laugh and yell at me, “I know exactly what lies beneath Vin. You’re just scared of letting him out to play.”

3.5 Stars

There is a whole lot going on in this book, the 4th installment in the Stern Family Saga. Vin has some dark secrets, and is quite a damaged soul. He has some major demons that he’s battling, and Brittany, the high-class escort/protogee of Vin’s adoptive mother Catherine, seems to be the only person who has been able to make him feel at peace.

But we all know that secrets don’t stay buried forever, and the ghosts of the past have a way of working their way into the present. Especially in a mob romance! But at the end of the day, will the connection that Brittany and Vin have be enough to withstand the obstacles in their way?

The banter and connection between the characters is good right from the start, and the story itself is gritty and dark, but has some really tender moments between the hero and heroine. I have not read the previous books in this series, and I figured that this book was a standalone since the blurb did not indicate otherwise. But there are quite a few holes that I found in the story because I was not familiar with the other brothers, and the book does end on a cliffhanger, presumably setting up the next story to come. So reader beware. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Written by Monique Orgeron’s eldest, most beautiful, and intelligent daughter. (My sister is going to hate this part.)

My mom happens to be the most caring, loving, and stubborn person I know, well anyone knows. She gives 100% percent of herself to everyone and has given up so much of herself for my sister and I. For twenty-one years she has poured her heart and soul into making sure we know that we are loved and that we can do anything we put our minds too, but it was about time she figured that out about herself.

Up until this year I hadn’t seen my mom do anything for only her, but this book has allowed her to travel the world through the pages of a book, make new friends, and feel the joy of doing something exciting.

There is a new light behind her eyes and it is just making me feel more joy than she can ever imagine. While she might be annoying most of the time, I am so thrilled that she is finally allowing herself to grow as a person and not spend all of her energy on her family.

It has been a long journey of self-discovery for my mom; she has gone from domestic supermom to domestic goddess throughout the process of writing.

We are so very excited and proud of you! I love you as big as the world.

I’ll say this about Christian — he made one hell of a first impression. When I first saw the strapping man, he was doing handstands naked on a dock along the canal. His crown jewels were far more entertaining than anything else I’d seen on the boat tour, so I did what any curious woman would do — I took his photo. I might have looked at the shot a few dozen times. Little did I know I’d meet him again, a year later, at a secret garden bar in the heart of the city, where I’d learn that his mind and his mouth were even more captivating. But given the way my heart had been trampled, I wanted only a simple deal — No strings. No expectations.

Our arrangement worked well enough until the day I needed a lot more from him…

***

Let me just say, this whole part-time lover thing was her idea. I’d have gone all-in from the start, but hey, when a gorgeous, brilliant woman invites you into her bed, and only her bed…well, I said yes.

But then, one hysterical phone call from my brother later, begging me to find myself a wife so grandfather’s business stays in the family, and I need a promotion with Elise. Turns out a full-time husband suits her needs too, and a temporary marriage of convenience ought to do the trick, until we can simply untie the knot…

As long as no one finds out…
As long as no one gets hurt…
As long as no one falls in love…

But our ending was one I never saw coming.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Part-Time Lover is an enjoyable marriage-of-convenience story between two characters we previously met in LB’s Wanderlust: Christian and Elise are the friends of Wanderlust’s Griffin anJoy, who realize that she was the woman who called out to him while he was doing naked handstands on a Copenhagen dock a year ago and then stood him up.

In Part-Time Lover we get the full backstory about their initial meeting in Copenhagen, what happened later that night when Elise stood him up, and the plane ride they unknowingly shared to London at the end of that weekend. A year later, in the present day, fate intervenes again for Elise and Christian when they are introduced by Joy and Griffin. Elise was badly burned by her late husband and as charming as she finds Christian, she’s reluctant to get romantically involved. Thus begins their Friday night non-dates, an adorable way for them to get to know one another better.

But when Christian’s family’s company is at risk due to a marriage clause, Elise steps up to be his wife for three months, since she’ll benefit from his input and expertise in her own advertising work. As these stories always go, it’s not long before Christian and Elise are falling in love, but each are under the impression that the other doesn’t feel the same way.

The story is a common trope, but LB so wonderfully crafts a story about a wounded heroine, and a hero who is determined to prove to her that he can be everything she needs him to be. The brutal honesty that Elise and Christian have with one another from the start is part of their charm as a couple, which is why I wanted to toss my kindle when they wouldn’t confess to their true feelings for one another!

But the moment where Christian takes matters into his own hands and confesses how he feels? Perfection! This was wonderful story about how a part-time relationship turned into something beautiful and ever-lasting. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Elise grabbed the triangle and began racking the balls, putting them in their proper place on the pool table. She grabbed the one ball and put it at the apex when Rachel walked over and leaned against the side of the pool table.

“Are you having a good time?” her friend asked.

“Yeah. I’m glad you asked me to come. I totally kicked Luke’s ass.”

Rachel smiled, but it was hesitant.

Elise stopped what she was doing. “What’s wrong?”

Rachel stood up straight. “I think we’re going to take off. I don’t feel well. Shelly and Joe are leaving, too. Shelly’s tired, and she wants to go home and put her swollen feet up.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” Rachel said, putting her hand over her stomach. “I think it was something I ate.”

Elise narrowed her eyes and studied her friend. “Liar. You just want to go home and get laid.”

Rachel blushed. “Guilty. I haven’t seen Sean for a week.” She stuck her bottom lip out.

Elise laughed. “I understand. Go have fun with your man.”

Rachel looked around the room, as if she was calculating the situation.

“What is it?” Elise asked.

“Nothing.”

“Rachel, just spit it out. What’s wrong?”

“I don’t want to leave you here with Luke.”

Elise shook her head. “I’ll be fine. We’re having fun. I’m not ready to go home yet.”

Her friend looked over her shoulder to where Luke stood at the bar, talking to Sean. They seemed to be having a serious conversation. She looked back at Elise. “I just want you to be careful.”

Elise tilted her head. “How do you mean?”

“It’s been over six months since you and Jason broke up. I don’t want to see you get hurt again.”

Elise shook her head in confusion. “I still don’t get it. Why would I get hurt?”

Rachel sighed. “Just don’t sleep with Luke, okay? He’s grown up quite a bit, but he’s still Luke. I’ve never seen him get serious with anyone, and I don’t want your heart to get broken.”

Elise threw her head back and laughed. “We are just playing pool. Nothing’s going to happen.”

Rachel didn’t laugh. “I know you haven’t slept with anyone since before you and Jason broke up.” She leaned in close and lowered her voice. “And I know how horny you get when you’ve been drinking. I also know that sex with Jason was mediocre, at best, so you’re probably really jonesing for sex now. And let’s face it; we both know that Luke probably fucks like a rock star.”

Elise laughed again and shook her head. “Trust me, Rach, you have nothing to worry about. I am never going to sleep with Luke Long.”

********

The next morning, Elise woke, flat on her stomach, disoriented, with a piercing headache that only came from a hangover. While she’d been living with her parents for about a month now, she’d often still wake up in confusion from forgetting where she was at first. It’d sometimes take her a minute to realize she wasn’t in her house in Denver anymore. She opened one eye to check the time, but the alarm clock wasn’t hers or the one in her parents’ guest room.

She sat up, jarring her already-sore head, and let out a moan. Thankfully, dark shades were covering the windows, casting the room in shadows and hiding the evil sun.

What happened last night? Her memory was fuzzy, and it hurt to think.

She realized she was naked and pulled the sheet up to cover herself as she slowly looked around the room, recognizing nothing. Nothing but the sleeping naked male lying on the bed next to her.

Oh God. No! Panic raced through her body, and memories rose to taunt her.

She’d slept with Luke Long. She’d slept with. Luke. Long.

She whimpered and closed her eyes. She had managed to escape college without screwing the guy, only to have dirty, dirty sex with him last night. And that was only the stuff she could remember.

She was never drinking again.

If Rachel ever found out, she was going to give Elise so much shit—after she quizzed Elise on whether the whole fucks-like-a-rock-star thing was true.

Elise couldn’t recall everything from last night after the rest of their friends had left the restaurant, and Luke and she had decided it would be fun to take a bunch of shots. But, now, she did know that, yes, Luke Long did indeed fuck like a rock star. Her sore vagina could attest to that.

I hate you, alcohol.

Luke shifted beside her, but the arm he had over his eyes remained where it was, and his breathing regulated and deepened again.

She really should get out of there before he woke up, but instead, she found herself staring at his beautiful body. Why does he have to be so gorgeous?

She moved her gaze from his face to down his muscular chest and stomach and noticed a blemish of some kind. She leaned closer to look at the red mark directly above his hip.

Are those teeth marks?

A memory surfaced. She’d bitten him so hard that she bruised him…after she went down on him…again. She dropped her head in her hand. She was such a slut.

She looked again at the wound, and her gaze moved to the thin white sheet that was covering one leg and only part of his penis. God, even flaccid, it was thick and long. She remembered thinking it was perfect. She might have even told him that she wanted to mold his dick, so she could use it on herself when she was alone. She moaned softly with embarrassment.

“Jesus, would you stop thinking? You’re making my hangover ten times worse.”

Elise jumped. “Would you stop scaring me?”

Luke chuckled and moved his arm from his face. His brown eyes glittered with amusement. “Sorry,” he said, but his tone indicated that he wasn’t the least bit remorseful.

And, now, she was regretting not getting the hell out of there right away.

Cover Reveal: Family Ties, by Stephie Walls

Release Date: June 21, 2018

Cover Design: Wicked by Design

Synopsis

With a history like ours, the meaning of the word family tended to tangle into something unrecognizable. DNA and bloodlines didn’t tie us together, and neither did our last names. Various shades of grey blurred the branches of our twisted family tree.

I wasn’t her brother.
They weren’t my parents.
Not that it mattered…

She was off limits.

Portia was my friend.
Then my foster sister.
And she’d always be the love of my life.

Goodreads

Excerpt

As adamant as I was that the stages of grief were nothing other than crap some shrink created to sell books and services, the truth remained. I had hit stage two with guns blazing shortly after I dropped Portia off at school. Anyone in my path could testify to that fact, and most made excuses for my poor behavior.

Hensley tried harder than anyone to get me to talk. “Jude, I don’t understand what happened.”

If I weren’t careful, I’d find myself in a counselor’s office exploring my feelings—as if I needed to explore how fucking bad it hurt for my mom to die. I experienced that shit every day—talking about it wouldn’t bring her back or take the pain away.

“I got into a fight.” And suspended for three days.

Ernie and Hensley sat with me at the kitchen table, and Baker laid his head on my thigh in support. He didn’t have a clue what was going on, only that I was unhappy and Ernie had done a lot of yelling.

“Over what?” She pleaded with me to let her in—she’d be happy with a few crumbs.

It didn’t matter over what. They wouldn’t understand, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to explain it in any detail. “A guy said some things about Portia.”

Ernie’s shoulders finally relaxed, and Hensley leaned over to cup my cheek in her hand.

“Sweetheart, I love that you want to defend your sister, but fighting is never the answer.”

My sister. And that’s why I’d never tell them the truth. “Okay.”

She stroked her thumb over my swollen cheek. The guy had gotten in one solid shot. While I’d never thrown a punch, I hadn’t realized what kind of advantage my height gave me when push came to shove.

“Are you sure you won’t consider talking to Dr. Vanderhugh? He was such a help to me when we had family planning issues.” Family planning equated to infertility, which brought the Shaws to Portia and later me.

“I’m fine. I just refuse to let anyone say things about Portia that aren’t true. Neither of you would have stood by while someone talked shit about her, either.”

“Jude!” Ernie’s defeated posture became determined. Ernie and I had always had a bond that Hensley and I didn’t share. I had a mom, but Ernie filled in the empty space left by an absent father. “Language.”

Seventeen years old, yet they believed I never cussed. Or just that I shouldn’t. “Sorry.” I wasn’t.

“I’m concerned that you’ve suddenly started defending with your fists instead of words. You’re such an articulate boy. It just doesn’t make any sense.” Hensley said all the right things; I just had no interest in hearing any of them.

My own mother would have slapped me upside the head—not only for my behavior but my attitude in general. That thought only served to elicit internal shame. I sighed, desperate to end the discussion and wrap up the family powwow. “I won’t do it again. I’m sorry. It got out of hand.”

I didn’t want to disappoint them, either of them. They’d been good to me for the better part of ten years. Not once had they missed anything going on in my life, skipped out on a holiday or birthday, or taken the easy path when my mom was sick—they deserved better than I currently gave. Even with that realization, I couldn’t stop the anger that poured from every part of my soul.

“Can I go now?” This wasn’t getting us anywhere. Either they needed to punish me or leave me alone. I deserved the first and needed the last.

Hensley made to say something, and Ernie put his hand up, halting her. “You can. But be prepared to spend the next three days working around the house. Your suspension will not be a vacation.”

I pushed the chair back more forcefully than intended when I got up and knocked it over. “Understood.” Instead of apologizing and picking it up, I left it lying there and walked out.

I hadn’t even made it to the bottom of the stairs when the sting of a firm grasp jerked my bicep. The force at which the hand held me indicated it was Ernie; even so, I glanced at the offending hand and then at my captor.

“I know you’re hurting right now. I get it. But you will be respectful in this house. And you will act like you have common sense outside of it. We are more than happy to get you someone to talk to if you don’t think it can be either of us.”

I glared at him through squinted eyes and jerked my arm from his grasp.

“Don’t push Hensley and me out, Jude. We both love you.” The pity that radiated from his expression and dripped from his words ate at me. This wasn’t the relationship the two of us had always had, and it wasn’t one I wanted now.

Ernie’s prying wouldn’t change anything and it certainly wouldn’t solve any of my problems. I wished he understood that I needed him to be normal, not protective. If he wanted to serve a purpose in helping me through this, then he needed to act as though nothing had changed. But he wasn’t going to handle anything that way, and I wasn’t going to direct his parenting path.

“I’m fine.” And I stomped up the stairs. I didn’t slam my door, even though I wanted to. Instead, I closed it, locked it, and put on headphones. There, I listened to the Beatles playlist Portia and I danced to the night of my mother’s funeral.

I tried to think back to that night, dancing with her while she attempted to relieve me of some of my grief, but I couldn’t let go of Chad Hartman taunting me in the halls about Portia.

“I heard she’s become quite the free spirit since she’s been gone.”

“Rumor has it, if she was a virgin when she got to school, she sure isn’t now.”

“Frat parties just aren’t the same without Portia Shaw. Seems everyone on frat row has taken their turn.”

The guy had never cared for Portia, although I didn’t have a clue why. He’d teased her mercilessly last year, and somehow, she had managed to ignore him. Not me. The first words out of his mouth, I’d shoved him against the lockers in the D hall. The second insult and my fist met his face. That was the one time he got in a shot. I’d hit him gain, which spun him back into the foot traffic away from the wall. He’d wiped at his bloody lip and then spewed the filth that brought the teachers running. It probably wasn’t his words that grabbed their attention so much as me laying him out on the floor of the senior hall, straddling him, and punching him until someone pulled me off.

I wasn’t sure if I struggled with the horrid things he said or that I couldn’t be sure they weren’t true. Portia had been gone a month and hadn’t come home once. Her calls happened less frequently and were shorter when they came. I didn’t want to believe anything Chad said, yet I couldn’t deny it with any certainty. Something had captured her attention. It might just be growing up and independence. Or it could be all of Phi Beta Kappa.

One summer, no regrets
Carly Reynolds does not want to work at her father’s Branson theater over the summer, but she has no choice. After wrecking his prized Mercedes on Prom night, she’s got to pay him back somehow before she leaves for college. Now she’s stuck working as the personal assistant to twenty-year-old Gracin Ford, former member of one-hit-wonder boy band Accentuate.
Gracin is demanding, condescending, and an all-around jerk. Carly would rather eat glass than deal with a male diva who’s more famous for his stint in rehab than his music. Until she realizes that Gracin’s lonely. Once she welcomes him into her life, she starts to let him into her heart. Even though she knows it will end when she leaves for school, Carly doesn’t want to look back on her life and wonder what if. Even if it means a broken heart.
Lynn Stevens flunked out of college writing her first novel. Yes, she still has it and no, you can’t read it. Surprisingly, she graduated with honors at her third school. CHAPTER ONE
Nobody sane should ever be up at eight on a Saturday morning. Especially not when said person stayed up until three a.m. for a horror movie marathon with her best friends Ivy and Nena. So totally worth it though.
What a waste of a Saturday. I could be sleeping, or bungee jumping, or sleeping, or ziplining, or sleeping instead of starting a job I didn’t want in the first place.
I bit back a yawn as I smoothed the wrinkled turquoise polo, the required uniform for Mountain View Resort employees. Taking a deep breath to steady the waves in my stomach, I knocked on the door to room four-oh-two three times, as instructed, and squeezed my clipboard against my chest.
What had my father been thinking bringing this guy to Branson? For the last few years, I’d overheard Dad lamenting to my brother about how the shows didn’t make enough money and the profits from the resort disappeared into the theater. If Dad wanted to revive that dump, he’d need someone to sell out every performance. I had serious doubts about his choice. Another reason I was in the doghouse.
I lifted my fist to hammer the door a second time when it flew open.
A wet torso greeted me, and a hint of the hotel’s jasmine soap drifted from the room. My gaze followed water dripping down tanned pecs and over the only real six-pack I’d ever seen as it disappeared into the thick hotel towel wrapped around his waist. Wow. My face burned hotter than the coffee I’d slammed earlier, and I forced my head up to meet the gaze of The Gracin Ford, celebrity bad boy and former member of Accentuate, a one-hit wonder boy band.
Gracin’s manscaped eyebrows arched as bright blue eyes took a circuit over my body. My skin tingled all over in response to his gaze.
Sadly, he had to open his mouth. “Not my type, but thanks.”
Then he slammed the door in my face.
What? That… that… that son of a bitch! I punched the door three times, fully prepared to give this egotistical asshole a piece of my mind. Meanwhile, my father’s lecture from half an hour ago echoed between my ears: “If you want to go to U of N in the fall, you work for me this summer to pay me back for the damage to the Mercedes. Don’t, and you can go to Southern Community like your brother did.” I counted to thirty, trying and failing to calm myself while I waited for his highness.
The door swung in. At least this time, he’d had the decency to put on a pair of khaki shorts and a t-shirt. His gaze shifted over me once more, and I tried not to squirm, but blue eyes gave me the creeps. And brought back memories I’d rather pretend didn’t exist.
“What now?” he asked. If he was even slightly miffed, he didn’t show it. The cool nonchalance in his voice didn’t stop my temper from shooting toward the atmosphere.
I dug my nails into the back of the clipboard and smiled my best smile. “Hi, Mr. Ford. I’m Carly Reynolds, your … personal assistant. Your father provided us with a detailed itinerary of your day-to-day–”
“Let me see it,” he said, leaning his shoulder against the door jam.
I handed it over, keeping the tremor in my hands at bay. Personal assistant my ass, more like his errand bitch. If he hadn’t fired his previous P.A., I could be lounging by the pool as a lifeguard or cleaning rooms or checking guests at the front desk. Instead, I had to spend my summer following every whim of a twenty-year-old has-been. As he took the itinerary, his eyebrows furrowed at something else. Before my hand could drop back to my side, he snatched it and tugged at the tie holding the leather cuff covering my wrist.
His eyebrows lifted again and amusement danced across his full lips. “Nice tat. Why hide it?”
“Who says I’m hiding it?” He let go of my hand, and I quickly retied the cuff over the small trinity knot tattoo on my wrist. It had only been two weeks since I’d gotten inked, but Mom and Dad hadn’t noticed. Yet.  I crossed my arms and bit the inside of my upper lip. As much as I didn’t want to be here, I also didn’t want to go to Southern Community. Keeping my mouth shut was kind of required if I wanted to go to Nashville in the fall.
Gracin nodded and refocused on the itinerary. He flipped the paper, shaking his head. “According to this, you’re supposed to take me to breakfast every morning at eight so we can discuss the day’s schedule.” He handed the clipboard back to me. “I’m assuming that’s why you’re here now.”
“Yep.”
He sighed. “Let me get my shoes. No doubt the big kahuna will be expecting me.” He moved into the room and I reached out to hold the door open. “I’ll get a more realistic schedule to you.”
“Realistic?” I asked as he slipped on a pair of boat shoes and a Rolex that could pay for half a semester at U of N or the entire two years at Southern Community.
“Yeah, that’s clearly the schedule Dad wants me to keep. Not even close to reality.” Gracin stepped into the hallway, patting his pocket. He groaned and turned to stop the door from shutting completely, but it was too late. He fell forward, letting his forehead thunk against the thick wood. “You wouldn’t happen to have a key to my room, would you?”
“No, but we can get one from the front desk after breakfast. You’re moving into one of the cabins today anyway.” I shrugged because it wasn’t that big of a deal. “No worries.”
Gracin laughed, but there wasn’t any humor to it. “Do me a favor. Keep this key thing between us, okay? The last thing I need is to hear how irresponsible I am. Again.”
I held back the scoff and the sarcastic comment that would normally shoot from my mouth in record speed. Especially since I’d heard the same lecture more times than I could count. “Yeah, okay. But we have to go now, or you’re going to have to hear how irresponsible I am.”
“Well, I won’t say anything about the tat in that case.” Gracin’s smile showed his Hollywood white teeth.
We were half way between his room and the elevator when his cell rang. I tried to ignore his half of the conversation, but when you’re alone with someone, it’s hard not to listen.
“Hey, babe.” Pause. “Yeah, I had a great time too.”
Another pause. Gracin laughed, clutching his hand against his chest.
“Probably best they didn’t catch us. Photographic evidence and all.”
Another pause when we got to the elevator. Gracin’s face turned from California tan to the shade of a bruised red pepper.
“You didn’t? Please tell me you didn’t.”
I wanted to lean closer to hear what the person on the other end had done. Celebrity drama and all. I didn’t seek it out, but that didn’t stop me from reading the headlines when they popped up on my computer.
After I pushed the button for the elevator, we stood side by side. Gracin’s fingers tightened around the phone. I could hear a female voice coming from his speaker but not what she said. Gracin slapped the mirrored doors.
Housekeeping’ll love that.
The doors dinged open as Gracin’s fist soared toward them, and he threw himself into the elevator. He managed not to fall, but it was so hard not to laugh.
“Next time you talk to that jackass, tell him you were just another one-night stand.”
Wow. I’d somehow managed to keep my expression neutral when he fell into the elevator, but my mortification couldn’t be hidden.
He stared at me in the mirror. “There goes hiding my lack of responsibility today,” he said in a calm voice that didn’t match the fury from a moment ago.
I kept my mouth shut despite the thoughts running through my head and held his mirrored gaze. Both took supreme battles of will. I thought only one thing: U of N. Nothing was going to keep me from going to Nashville.
Gracin tilted his head. His eyebrows sagged as he opened his mouth. A beep sounded from his phone, distracting him from whatever he was about to say. He shook his head at the screen and then handed it to me. “Here. Fair warning before Hurricane Albert leashes his wrath on me.”
I wasn’t interested in getting caught up in his drama, but curiosity got the best of me and I glanced at the image on the screen. It wasn’t anything major. A beautiful girl with bright brown eyes and obviously dyed red hair kissed a smiling Gracin on the cheek. It was pretty clear they were in a bar when this was taken. Several empty beer bottles sat on the table in front of them.
“A hot chick took a photo of you guys in a bar?” I handed the phone back. “Big deal.”
“The ‘deal’ is she sold it to a tabloid.” Gracin shoved the phone into his pocket. He didn’t spare me a glimpse, even in the mirror. “I can see the headlines already: ‘Gracin Ford Falls Off the Wagon.’ ” Finally, he faced me. “Except I didn’t. I’ve been sober for almost a year. None of those empties were mine. Not that anybody will believe me. Especially King Albert.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, ‘oh.’”
I didn’t say anything, but the heat burning the tips of my ears was enough.
The elevator opened to the lobby. Gracin motioned me out first and followed me to the private dining room. Dad sat at the head of the table in the middle of the room. My mother sat to his right, and a gray-haired man with a stringy comb-over sat on his left. His extensive lack of hair didn’t stop Albert Ford from trying. My older brother, Luke, sat next to three empty seats for me, Gracin, and my little sister, Miranda. Quite the family affair.
“Carly, I’m glad you made it,” Dad said, adding a fake laugh at the end. To anyone else, it might’ve appeared teasing. I knew better. Dad was not happy we were a minute late. Of course, when it came to me, he wouldn’t have been happy had I been two minutes early either. My father was the consummate politician around here. He ruled more like a dictator, but was JFK when guests were around. “I thought you were going to be late.”
“That’s my fault, Mr. Reynolds,” Gracin said. He threw out a hundred-watt smile.
I fought to roll my eyes. At least he’s taking the hit for me.
“Carly rushed me out the door, then let it close before I remembered to grab my key.”
And under the bus I go. Thanks, asshat.
Dad stared through me with his laser pointer green eyes. “Well, Carly, I suggest you head to the front desk and get another. While you’re there, make sure housekeeping stays out of his room until this evening when the cabin is ready.”
“Yes, sir.” I let my head drop in good girl compliance, catching the laughing eyes of my brother. We both inherited Dad’s light brown hair, but Luke lucked out getting Dad’s eyes. Unfortunately, he used them to taunt me at every turn, which only served to remind me who was the chosen one in the Reynolds family. Hint, his name began with an L.
Gracin made his way toward the buffet spread. He piled fresh fruit on his plate, winking at me. I shuddered as I freed myself from the room. Guys who winked were just plain creepy.
My last summer before heading off to college was going to be the worst one of my life. All because of a little dent in a Mercedes. Smashing.

“Don’t think you can play me that easily, Ms. Savage. I’m the master, and you’re still learning the game.” He stands and slips his tie off folding it neatly. Then he leaves me there hot and bothered and disappointed beyond belief. How dare he!

What does he mean he’s the master? And what game is he referring to? I was just flirting hoping for a repeat of this morning out here on his patio, a little exhibitionism. I wasn’t playing at anything.

I wasn’t then, but I am now. He likes to control. I’ve witnessed it on multiple occasions. It’s time to take that away from him and see how he likes it.

I stand and strip off my tank top, step out of my skirt, and kick off my flip-flops. I round the table and push through the gate separating his patio from the sandy, sparsely inhabited beach. I’m still sporting a thong but absolutely nothing else. I don’t know if it’s a topless beach, and I don’t care.

I stretch my arms over my head scooping my hair into a fresh messy bun and wrap the rubber band from my wrist around it just as my feet touch the edge of the water.

“Aria!” Roman’s voice booms from behind me. I turn with a wicked smile and see him standing still in his suit pants and dress shirt holding up my top and skirt with fury in his eyes.

Bingo, now let’s see who’s the master and what game we’re playing. He catches my expression and lowers his gaze to my naked breasts. Right before my eyes, I watch him turn into a lunatic. Face red, veins bulging and pulsing from everywhere, he throws open the gate on the patio and storms through the sand in his thousand-dollar shoes and ten-thousand-dollar suit.

But I’m safe in the water, or at least I’m pretty sure I am. I wade out deeper feeling more secure but only for a moment. My eyes go wide when he storms into the ocean dressed from head to toe with the look of an enraged maniac on his face.

Nerves scramble my brain, and I laugh as I swim further away from him. My depth is of no concern to this man full of possessive insanity, in fact, it may be propelling him.

“Aria, come here this instant! This isn’t a nude beach. It’s not even a topless beach for Christ’s sake!” he yells before diving underwater in my direction. Oh my God, for the first time since I let spontaneity take over, I worry about the repercussions of my actions.

What will he do when he catches me? He will catch me of that I am sure. I can see crazy in his eyes. He’s angry, and I am wild. He is possessive, and I need to be free. He is controlling, and I am rebellious.

I dart to the right, but it’s too late. His hand closes around my ankle, and I take in a huge breath right before he pulls me under. I can’t see him, my eyes are closed because of the salty water, but his hands are around my waist hauling me to the surface.

“Are you out of your fucking mind, woman? Somebody could have seen you.”

I try to blink the water from my eyes since he has my arms pinned to my sides. “So?”

“So? You just finished telling me that you’re mine while we are here, and in case you haven’t noticed, we are still here!” he shouts, and I recoil. I’ve never been shouted at by a man, especially right in my face.

I roll my lips inward and hold my breath unsure of what to say or do next. It turns out I don’t have to say or do anything. He turns toward the shore and starts walking us in that direction pushing through the water with such force it leaves a wake behind us. I know, I looked!

He turns me in his arms so that my front is plastered to his hiding my breasts from onlookers’ eyes of which there are only two—an elderly man and his wife sunning in lounge chairs a couple of doors down. I wave at them, and the woman waves back smirking in solidarity.

Roman is overreacting. I’m naked, so what? Women all over the world sunbathe topless and nude. He’s acting like I committed a felony.

“Stop fraternizing with the neighbors,” he growls. How did he know I waved?

“You can’t tell me what to do.”

“Oh yeah? You’re not swimming naked anymore, are you?”

“Because you hauled me out of the water like a sack of potatoes!”

“A sack of potatoes has more sense than you right now.”

“I don’t think I like your tone.”

“I don’t like your defiance,” he says storming through the patio doors with his clothes dripping water all over the carpets. He doesn’t stop to put me down. Instead, he makes a bee-line for the bedroom. Goodie!

He tosses me on the bed, and I laugh. I can’t help it, he is being so absurd. “You’re a caveman, Roman Forrest. You know that, right?”

He closes the door to the bedroom.

“You act like I’m your wife.”

He shoves his hand through his silky black hair and unbuttons his wet shirt.

I pull a sheet over myself suddenly feeling exposed and nervous.

“You don’t own me, you know,” I say, but he says nothing and walks in his squishy shoes to the edge of the bed and yanks the sheet off the bed.

“Hey!”

“You wanted to be naked so bad, why the sudden modesty?” he snaps.

“Because it’s my body to do with as I please. I wanted to skinny dip out there, and now I want to cover myself in front of you. You’re acting like a loon.”

“I’m acting like a man who doesn’t want to share his woman with the whole fucking world!” He unzips his slacks and shoves them down along with his black boxer briefs. He kicks off his shoes and socks and crawls up the bed pushing me down to hover over me.

Unsure of how far to go, I lower my voice but stand my ground. “I’d hardly say that grandma and grandpa are the whole world, and since when am I your woman?”

“Since the first time I put my mouth on you,” he says and lowers himself down to take my mouth in a rough, demanding kiss. My toes curl, my belly flips, and I fight the urge to wrap my arms and legs around him for oh, maybe two seconds, tops.

Beginnings BT Teaser 1

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Beginnings is a beginning to what I can only assume is a serial because it ends on a cliffhanger.

When up-and-coming lawyer Ash is pretty much forced to either go to Paris on business or be fired, his long-term girlfriend, Laura, makes the decision a lot easier for him when she dumps him. So Ash arrives in Paris unattached, and soon falls for Gabriella, the sexy waitress at the cafe he’s been frequenting. And in an instalove instant, they are head over heels in love with one another. But an unexpected run-in with someone from Ash’s past threatens to destroy the future they are planning together.

Beginnings BT Teaser 2

This was an okay story; it’s only about 10 chapters, so it’s a quick read. I thought some of the dialog was clunky, and some of the conversations between characters didn’t seem to flow naturally. Ash’s boss is really a demanding jerk, but I was intrigued by what was happening with him and thier Parisian colleague, Courtney. Overall, Beginnings is an okay read… but I don’t know if I’m interested enough to see how this cliffhanger is resolved.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review for Sunny Shelly Reads book blog.

Those
little bitty shorts ride up her tight ass as she walks. I want to put my hands
on it. Press my cock up against it as I kiss her neck, gathering her hair into
one hand and move it over her shoulder.
I swallow
hard. I can’t think like that. Not here. Not now.
Not ever.
“Are you
done?” Quinn puts one hand on her hip and for a split second I think she knows
what I’m thinking.
“Yeah,” I
say, picking up my last piece of bacon. I pop it in my mouth and stand,
bringing my plate over to the sink. Quinn takes it from me and bends over to
let the dogs lick the remnants of eggs. Her ass is in the air right in front of
me, and I wonder if she’s doing it on purpose to get a rise out of me.
Because she
is, and I have to change my stance thanks to my hardening cock.
“Quinn,” I
start, not sure what to say, but I have to say something. “We should talk.”
“About
what?” She straightens up and rounds on me, crossing her arms. Her eyes meet
mine, drilling in with an intensity I’ve never seen from her. She has little
flecks of blue in her brilliant green irises that I haven’t noticed before.
I move
closer, stepping over Boots. If I say it now, there will be no more wondering.
No more waiting. She’ll either take me or leave me, but at least I’ll know. I
can kiss her now or move on. Somehow, someway.
It’s not
hard. All I have to do is open my mouth and let the words come out, speaking
with unwavering vehemence as I tell her how I feel.
Yet, I
can’t.
Standing
here looking at Quinn, with her messy hair, thick sweater hiding her perfect
tits, and dogs circling around her feet in hopes of more food, I feel more
nervous that I did the first time I stood in front of a patient on the
operating table with a scalpel in my hand.
“Archer?”
“Your
wrist. How’s your wrist?”
“My wrist?”
she questions, nostrils flaring. She lets out a sigh and picks up the plate the
dogs licked clean. “Same as yesterday. I ordered a posture brace on Amazon to
help with my shoulder pain, not that you care.”
I’d offer
to massage her shoulders, but the moment my hands land on her back, all bets
are off.
Suddenly,
Quinn advances. She’s inches away, arms crossed tightly over her chest and head
tipped up to mine.
“That’s not
what you wanted to talk about.” She pulls her bottom lip between her teeth and
cocks her head. “Is it?”
“Quinn.”
“Don’t Quinn
me, Archer Jones. You know as well as I do you weren’t going to talk to my
about my wrist.” She lets out a frustrated breath and lets her arms fall to the
sides. Her fingers brush against me, and my skin feels electric just from that small
touch.
Goddammit.
“But fine.
I’ll play that game. Here.” She holds up her hand. “Examine me, doctor.”
Her words
are meant to mock, but they do the opposite. I’ll examine every inch of her
body. Twice. Three times. Just to be certain nothing was missed.
I take her
wrist and tug her forward, knocking her off balance so she falls against me,
both her hands flat on my chest. I slip my other hand around her waist,
stopping at the small of her back. Quinn’s lips part and she gasps.
Instead of
struggling to get away, she relaxes in my arms, and nothing has ever felt more
right.
Even though
this is wrong.
Quinn is in
my arms, back arched and tits against my chest. My cock is hard, pulsing
against the confines of my jeans. Thunder booms above and Quinn shivers.
“Do you
still want to talk?” My voice is gruffer than I intend, but the harshness does
something for Quinn. She slides her hands up my chest and around my shoulders.
“There are
other things I’d rather do,” she says, voice breathy. Fuck. She’s killing me. She
brushes her hips against mine, feeling my erection through my pants. “And I
think you would too.”
I do. I so
fucking do and she knows it.
“Archer,”
she says softly and hearing her whisper my name is almost enough to make me
come right then and there. I slowly bring my face down to hers. I’m going to
kiss her. After all this time, it’s finally fucking happening.
