Book Blitz: The Dog Walker’s Diary, by Kathryn Donahue

Title: The Dog Walker’s Diary
Author: Kathryn Donahue
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Cover Designer: Madeline Berger
Editor: Kelsy Thompson
Blurb:
Daniel Ashe has reason to believe he is incapable of falling in love. He certainly has no romantic interest in Annie, the odd Irish woman he hired to walk his dogs – but every night he comes home to find she has left him a new and fantastical story about their secret lives. His dachshund is a buccaneer on the high seas, his retriever recounts a past life as a circus lion, and Daniel is cast time and again as a romantic hero.
As her stories become the highlight of his day, Daniel realizes that Annie is embedding hints about her own astonishing past, and he has to ask himself if he’s truly incapable of falling in love after all.
Kathryn Donahue is a freelance writer and former tongue-in-cheek advice columnist for The Deepwell Press. Her humor essays have been published in First Sunday, and she won the Spotlight Award for her one-act play The Sty. Her debut novel, The Dog Walker’s Diary, is a Forward finalist for Indie Book of the Year. It earned a coveted star review from Publishers Weekly, ( “… a diverting delight from beginning to end,”) and a four star rating from RT Book Reviews, (“… one of the most remarkably unique contemporary romances this year.”) Ms. Donahue is completing a new novel, and working on a screenplay.

Dog Diary
Thursday, 5:00 a.m.
Dear Annie,
Your stories are back in here, but during their short hiatus to my office I showed them to my boss. After reading them, Peter took off his glasses and said, “So you’re telling me that this woman leaves you a new fairy tale every night?”
     “Yes. Every night.”
“Then you know what she is, don’t you?”
     “What do you mean?”
“This Irish woman. Do you know what she is?”
I shook my head. “What are you talking about? What is she?”
“Wake up, Daniel. That dog walker of yours is a Scheherazade.”
Annie, you didn’t respond to my invitation, and in looking back I can see how easily it could be misconstrued. If I were a woman, alone and in a different country, I might not agree to meet a semi-stranger for coffee either, even if I had been entertaining him for days with fantastical stories.
So please, allow me to make myself less of a stranger.
I am known by a small but select group of females as a heartless jerk incapable of falling in love. Each in turn soon gave up on me, more with a sad shake of the head than with dishes flying. It has happened so often that I have to concede the ladies are right. Apparently I have skipped or tripped over some developmental step that makes me incapable of true intimacy. I’ve made my peace with that, and recently have been lucky enough to meet Victoria, a lady who seems to suffer the same affliction. (Does that make us soul mates or soul-less mates?)

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

SETUP: Wren has just arrived at Blue Spruce Lodge with her niece, Skylar. Sky wanted to meet her father, Trigg—a man who had NO IDEA he was a father until Wren showed up a month ago and revealed her sister had kept his baby.

~ * ~

Wren drew a deep breath of the clean mountain air, closing her eyes and letting the sunshine bathe her face. Construction noises sounded in the distance. Birdsong overlaid it with the pulse of rap music and a sudden, sharp whistle.

She opened her eyes and Oh. She started to flush with self-conscious heat even before she fully registered that Trigg Johansson was coming out of the lane and walking toward her. Her brain said, Hot man alert, then she recognized him and a fresher, more startling rush of sexual awareness went through her.

Déjà vu all over again. Damn it.

When she had arrived here in May, he had been sitting in a small, open-topped ATV kind of vehicle right here where she was standing. He’d been talking to another man who’d given her a friendly nod.

She might have said, “Hi.” She honestly couldn’t remember because her brain had been exploding.

Trigg had given her a wolfish look that she had felt in the pit of her belly. She had recognized him, having stalked him online, but even as she had met his gaze with hysterical disbelief, her girl-parts had scanned the mouth-watering selection and ordered the full buffet.

That’s why she had chickened out on speaking to him directly. She had gone inside, ears ringing with her pounding heart. He’d been gone when she walked outside again.

By then, she had secured a tentative job offer and the knowledge that her life would never be the same.

She had dreaded seeing him after that. Not just because she’d seen firsthand that he was a player. Of course he was a player. He had knocked up her sister when he was seventeen. He probably had a whole flock of Skylars out there.

But who could blame Mandy or any of the women he’d conquered? He was built like a god and moved like a cat, as though he knew how to use each of his muscles exactly as intended. He wore jeans and a T-shirt today and had light stubble the same color as his dark brows. His hair had been in a man-bun the last time she saw him. Today it was shaved into business on the sides, rumpled bedhead on top. His eyes were a sharp, mountain-lake blue, his smile flat and tense. Forced.

That vaguely hostile, hard expression made her heart slip and judder while her limbs felt loose and lubricated.

The way he had smiled at her the first time had been very inviting and approving.

The second time, when they’d all met in a lawyer’s office for twenty minutes, he’d worn a suit and hadn’t smiled at all.

She wasn’t able to find a smile right now. She was standing here like a virgin on her wedding night, throat dry, waiting for him to come to her.

Something nudged her in the crotch, scaring the shit out of her.

“Oh my God!” She jerked back and clipped her hip on the driver’s side mirror. Pain streaked through her hip bone while she scrabbled for balance by grasping at the warm roof of the car.

“Murphy. Sit.” Trigg stopped behind her taillight and snapped his fingers by his thigh.

The dog let his haunches drop, but stayed in front of her, tail swirling like an electric beater, sweeping through bits of gravel on the concrete. His pink tongue lolled out of his black-lipped mouth and he cocked his head at her. His ears and face were black, but he had a white stripe that came down between his eyes. The stripe ended in speckles above his black nose. There were more speckles on his white chest and legs. Border collie and heeler maybe, with Labrador eyes that offered instant and eternal love.

“Quite the welcoming committee.” She smoothed her hand down the short, silky fur on his hard head.

“We usually charge extra for that, but since you’re a VIP…” Trigg shoved his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. She could tell they were curled into fists. The mask of tension across his face bore an eerie resemblance to the one stonewalling in the passenger seat of her car.

Hunter

When my business partner asked me to do him a favor, I had no idea he was sending me on a blind date his mother arranged for him. I walked in the bar, saw the woman drinking her third martini, and knew I was in for an eventful night.

After the unexpected second date, she didn’t know my real name or who I really was. By that time, the lie was too far gone, and I wanted her too much to admit the truth.

Laney

It’s not every day you find out your ex-boyfriend is engaged.

I shouldn’t have agreed to the blind date. My mother insisted, and I wasn’t in any position to turn down a night out.

I will admit, I definitely shouldn’t have ordered that fourth martini before said blind date even arrived.

The man turned out to be swoon worthy, handsome, condescending—a perfect distraction. Then I found out he was a liar.

I’ve never been in over my head to this degree.

Then again, I’ve never been in love.

Jodi was born and raised in the Midlands town of Northampton, England, where she lives with her two boys and a beagle. She is a self-professed daydreamer, a mojito addict, is famous for her obsession with Converse, and has a terrible weak spot for Alpha Males. Blog Tour: Sunny Shelly Reviews Someone Else’s Ocean, by Kate Stewart

We’re celebrating the release of  SOMEONE ELSE’S OCEAN by Kate Stewart! One-Click today!!!

Contemporary Romance

Stand Alone
July 31, 2018
Cover Designed by: Amy Queau- Q Design Cover and Premades

Blurb:

The first time I met Ian Kemp in the sparkling blue waters of St. Thomas, I was six years old and we shared a summer beneath the stars.
The second time I met Ian Kemp, he was a shell of the boy I once knew. Turbulent and infuriating, he refused my friendship at every turn. Like me, he was a casualty of life’s cruelty, but we were planets apart.
We’d both sought refuge on the island, hoping to find our anchor. Instead, we found each other and managed to reclaim our stars…until we both got swept away.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I liked Someone Else’s Ocean, but I didn’t love it. I loved The Real. I didn’t love Drive. I’ve come to the conclusion that KS is kind of hit-or-miss for me. Don’t get me wrong: her writing is beautiful. I have been to St. Thomas and imagined it in my head vividly from her words. And the connection between Koti and Ian — who spent a childhood summer together on the island many years ago — was lovely and I definitely felt their chemistry.

Unfortunately, Ocean just didn’t click for me the way that The Real had. (I loved the cameo by Abbie and Cameron!) I felt like a big piece of the puzzle was missing. I didn’t feel the moment — or feel like the reader saw — where Ian realizes he’s head over heels with Koti. I hate being TOLD something is so; I want to experience it with the characters, and did not feel as if I had.

Both characters found their way back to the island after major life disasters, and I loved how the sea and sand healed them both as they helped each other. But it just lacked the punch that I want in a romance that I’ll keep coming back to reread.

Overall, Ocean is a angst-filled story of second chances, letting go and healing. So if that’s your jam, this book is worth checking out. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I don’t know how to review this book without giving away the twist. The blurb hooked me, and I expected a contemporary romance. But that isn’t quite what It’s Not Over is about.

Daniel has some major secrets, and his life is about to crash and burn. The only thing he can do is push Vivian away. The time has come, he says. Their relationship has run its course.

Told through both POVs, the story goes back to the beginning of their relationship, to the present day where V is dumped with zero notice. But she knows there is more to D’s reasons than what he’s telling her, and she’s determined to find out why this double life of his has imploded their relationship the way that it has.

The story is long, and there are quite a few twists and turns, but It’s Not Over is intense. It’s an intense tale of love, determination and loyalty. Not at all what I was expecting, so if you are going to read it, go in blind and don’t try to find out too much about the story beforehand! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“What’s with all the bags in the hallway? Are you going somewhere?” I said lightly, still smiling despite my nerves. When he didn’t respond right away, didn’t even glance up from what he was doing, I obeyed, for once, sinking into a seat with the desk a barrier between us.

He snapped the file in front of him shut. I flinched. His knuckles were white as he clenched the edge of the folder and stuffed it into the cabinet under his desk. The locked clicked in place with a decisive turn of the key, the sound setting me on edge.

“No. Those are your belongings.” He gazed at me stoically, his onyx eyes cold and distant.

“Mine?” I asked dumbly.

“It’s over.”

Two little words sent the world crashing down on me. This had to be a joke. Not two minutes earlier, I’d been excited to be home. Couldn’t wait to see Daniel to tell him about my day. His generosity had made so much of it possible.

I fought to keep the hot tears pooling in my eyes at bay, the man I loved a blurry vision sitting across from me like a stranger.

“I’ve secured an apartment for you and deposited a generous sum of money into your account. You can keep your credit cards. It’s not fair for me to turn you out with nothing.” His lips were moving. I heard bits and pieces, but none of it registered. All I could do was stare blankly at him. “If the money isn’t enough, or if you need more, I’ll take care of it.”

Each word was like a slap, stinging my heart instead of my cheeks. I tried to take a deep breath but came up short.

“No.” It was all I could manage under the circumstances, and it felt like quite an accomplishment.

“No?” he repeated incredulously, eyes flaring, sparking my senses to life.

“No,” I reiterated, this time with some backbone.

“Don’t make this difficult.”

My eyes narrowed. “Did you think I would make it easy?” I growled, clenching my jaw.

“Have you ever.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Pucker Up, by Virna DePaul

PuckerUp-FacebookNowLive.jpg

We are celebrating the release of PUCKER UP by Virna DePaul! One-Click today!

Title: Pucker Up
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Pucker Up:

She won’t be his flavor of the week. But just a taste won’t hurt…right?

Jenna
I love Lee Bowers. And that sucks. He’s my brother’s best friend, but a bookish nerd like me would never fit into his celebrity-chef, serial-heartbreaker world. I don’t do risks. Lawyering feeds my bank account. Anonymous food blogging feeds my soul.

But one night, in a red-wine-fueled funk, I pour out my feelings in a blog post, safe behind my anonymous mask. And realize too late my drunken fingers hit “Publish” instead of “Delete.”

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I am screwed.

Lee
At first, I wanted to skewer the popular food critic who brutally lampooned my restaurant—apparently while simultaneously ogling my butt. But you know what? She’s right. The only hands-on time I’ve spent in the kitchen lately involves a hot blonde and, um…a zucchini.

Somewhere between my I’m-gonna-sue fury, and unexpectedly cuddling with Jenna after a night of soul-searing sex, I accidentally discover that blogger’s identity. And my whole life does a screeching 180.

I love Jenna Harrison. And I’m going to prove it to her, one anonymous, sexy text message at a time.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Delicious Stars

Take being secretly in love with your brother’s best friend, a whole lot of wine, and a drunken phone call in which you word vomit. Except that the drunken phone call is actually your blog and your rant is now on the Internet for everyone to see. It’s mortification times a million for lawyer by day/anonymous food blogger by night Jenna, who has been in love with chef Lee for as long as she can remember.

And Lee loves her too, but after a near-confession years ago that was kind of a disaster, he’s kept his feelings to himself. But after he and Jenna have a one-night stand, he discovers that she is the blogger who ripped him apart… except that what she was saying about him was because she actually cares for him… and a plan is set into motion to prove to Jenna that he cares about her, too.

The rest of this story is a comedy of errors. These two just can’t get it together. She’s so uptight and such a control freak, and talks herself out of every thought that maybe she’s not imagining that Lee has feelings for her. Lee, meanwhile, never felt like he’s good enough for Jenna so he never confessed how he felt. But during the time they spend together “to fix” the blogger situation (and have lots of sex), he begins to make small changes about himself, all of which were the changes Jenna wanted to see him make, to be the Lee she knew he could be, that she shared in her drunken blog post.

Pucker Up is a quick, enjoyable read. I really liked that the focus of the story was Lee and Jenna; there aren’t alot of other players involved, so you really get to know these characters. And knowing them so well really made me root for them to get together.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Tanner can’t believe sweet Emily is standing in his shop. Yelling and waving her hands and looking so god damn sexy he’s having trouble focusing. He’d spent two hard years in prison, with only the thought of this “good girl” to keep him sane.

He really should send her away…

Before either one thinks though, they’re naked and making memories on his tool bench with apparently the oldest condom in history. Now Tanner’s managed to knock-up the town’s “good girl” and she’s going to lose her job over some stupid “morality clause” if he doesn’t step up.

But can this bad boy teach his good girl they’re perfect for each other in time?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3.5 Stars

Small-town romance and bad boy/good girl romances check boxes on my favorite tropes list. And while Handle With Care started out strong for me, it just fell apart somewhere in the middle. We get it. Emily is “sensible.” And Tanner doesn’t think he’s good enough for her. But the characters have to start believing that they are good together in order for a story to work, and I felt like it took these two so damn long to get on the same page!

That said, the story is cute. No drama involved from exes, and relatively low angst, aside from Emily’s unplanned pregnancy and the drama that creates in her life. I wish we would have gotten more of Mimi and Josh’s adorable romance! Overall, not a bad series starter, since it seems we will get more books based on Tanner’s brothers.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt:

“Tanner.”

Just the way she said his name, sort of breathless, made him hard. He nodded.“Emily.”

“What are you doing here?” Her eyes narrowed.“Did you follow me?”

“You looked a little upset. I was just making sure no one else followed you.”

“You mean Ryan? He’s being a total pain in the…”

“Ass?”

“Yes.” She pressed her finger to the spot between her brows.“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I’m usually so…” She took a couple of deep breaths.“He was making me so angry.”

“I thought he was your boyfriend?”

“Not anymore. It’s over between me and Ryan. It was over before that night you and I…”

He decided to help her out.“Had hot, dirty sex on top of the workbench in my garage. Then up against the wall in my garage.”

She gritted her teeth but gave a quick nod.

“Why was it over with Mr. Perfect? Did he finish with you?” Maybe she’d needed some sort of affirmation of herself as a sexy woman. He wanted to beat Ryan for that, though he had ultimately benefited from it.

“None of your business.”

“Come on, Em. I’m curious.”

Her face took on a mutinous expression, lips pursed.“He said I was sensible and then he asked me to marry him.”

Tanner managed to choke back the laugh, but she must have seen it on his face.

“It’s not funny.”

He’d proposed? That made Tanner want to growl. But she had a point. It sounded as though Ryan had fucked up on the proposal. Tanner certainly wasn’t sorry. Ryan’s loss, his gain.“Let me get this straight. If he hadn’t called you sensible, you would have said yes?”

“Probably not. He told me he’d decided it was time to settle down, and I was a nice, sensible woman, and would make him a suitable wife. Or something like that. I sort of stopped listening at ‘sensible.’What sort of man starts a proposal by saying you’re sensible?”

“An asshole?”

“Yes. Exactly. I said I didn’t think we were suited and walked out. Then when I got home, Mimi told me she’d bought a bike from you, and then she more than hinted that I was sensible, too. So when you said it as well, I just…sort of blew.”

“Actually, you kissed me, then you stripped, then you threw yourself at me. I didn’t stand a chance.” He had an image of her standing naked in front of him, challenging him to do something, and almost groaned.

“I did not throw myself at you.”

He just stood there, one eyebrow raised.

She folded her arms across her chest.“Anyway.I thought you were pretending that never happened?”

“Believe me, I’m trying. But I keep getting these little flashbacks at the most inappropriate times. Like when I’m picking up a tool from my workbench and there you are, all soft and naked and panting for me.”

Why did he do this to himself? His dick was almost painfully hard.

She was staring at him wide-eyed, her pink lips slightly parted. She didn’t move. He cast a quick look around the street—it was empty—then he closed the space between them, lowered his head, and kissed her before she could even have an idea of his intentions. He half expected her to pull back and run away, but her lips softened, then parted under his, and he slipped his tongue inside, sliding it along the length of hers. He kissed her until they both ran out of air. He hadn’t thought kissing was such a big deal, but he could kiss Emily all night.

About Nina:

Growing up in the cold, wet, north of England, Nina Croft spent a lot of time huddled under the blankets dreaming of faraway sunnier places and ponies. When she discovered both could be found between the covers of a book, her life changed forever.

At the age of eighteen, in an attempt to turn dreams into reality, she headed south in search of the sun. She quickly picked up the perfect husband along the way and developed a taste for red wine and holidays in warm places.

Soon holidays weren’t enough, and together they volunteered to work in Africa where they both discovered a love of traveling and a dislike of 9-5 work. Afterward, they spent a number of years traveling (whenever possible) intermingled with working (whenever the money ran out.) Eventually, they stumbled upon a remote area in the mountains of southern Spain where they bought the small almond farm they now call home.

No electricity, no neighbors, no chocolate shops, but on the plus side, stunning scenery, a vineyard to make her own red wine, and far enough away from anywhere to satisfy Nina’s hermit tendencies. She shares the farm with her husband, and an ever-increasing number of animals, including Piggles, a three-legged Vietnamese pot-bellied pig.

Nina now spends her days riding her mare Gencianna under the blue Spanish skies—sunshine and ponies. She reckons this is proof that dreams really can come true if you want them enough.

She still travels, but usually only in her imagination, and can often be found lying under a fig tree, wine in hand, plotting stories of love in faraway places.

Nina believes love can come to anyone, anytime, anywhere and her books reflect this.
