Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Right Side Of Forever, by Meghan Quinn

The Left Side Of Perfect – Release Day – August 30

For better or for worse,’til death do us part . . .

The better captured me; she’s who stole my heart.

And made me realize I couldn’t live without this woman.

The worse of her took my breath away–kicked me when I was down and twisted me into a million knots.

When I first met her, I thought she was someone I would never see again.

The second time I ran into her, it was a random coincidence.

The third?

I didn’t know it at the time, but she was the girl I was going to marry.

But life isn’t always perfect. You have to take the better and the worse–even if it means giving her up, having her slip between your fingers, and letting her walk away.

I’m getting married.

This is forever, ’til death do us part.

The Right Side Of Forever – Release Day August 31

In sickness and in health, to love and to cherish . . .

It sounds so simple, to love someone unconditionally.

To give them your heart.

So why is she slowly eating away at my soul with every unanswered phone call, every unread text, and every door left unopened?

She said yes, and yet, in order for her to be with me . . . I need to let her go.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

YOU MUST READ THE LEFT SIDE OF PERFECT FIRST!

Without going into plot details — this book is one hell of a rollercoaster ride. I was angry, I was sad, I was elated, I was angry again… This book gave me ALL THE FEELS. It is a long and winding road for Colby to find his Right Side Of Forever, but it is a marvelous ride.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat. And I finished it in just a few hours because I could not put it down. And it is so much more than a love story. It’s a story about friendship, growing up, finding your own self worth and finding the person who will be there for you, forever.

Meghan Quinn delivers an absolutely perfect story in the Perfect Duet. I hope there is more to come for some of the secondary characters in this tale, because there are so many unfinished stories amongst them!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

Excerpt

I swipe my key through the door scanner. It’s 9:35 p.m and I’m late. After not wanting to come at all, and deliberating the whole thing for over an hour in the shower, I’m finally here.

I’m not really sure why, but what the hell. It can’t hurt, I suppose.

I walk into the gym and take a look around. There are a few guys working out at the back, plus a girl on the treadmill.

Great. He’s not even here.

All that over-analysing for nothing

Damn it.

After making my way onto the treadmill I start walking. I turn up the speed and begin to walk faster. I suppose I’ll have to actually work out then. What an anticlimax. I spent over an hour psyching myself up to be here, and he doesn’t even show up.

Fucking typical.

All men piss me off.

Oh well, it’s his loss.

Turning up the speed, I begin to jog, getting lost in the repetition. But when I look up into the mirror, I see him. There he is. He’s sitting on the weights bench in the corner, and flashing a slow sexy smile my way. He’s wearing a white T-shirt and navy sports shorts.

My stomach dances with excitement. I force him a smile, and then I look down, pretending to be uninterested.

God, he’s so….

He’s probably just a prop in this place. That’s what I would do if I owned a gym: pay gorgeous guys to hang out and make the girls swoon. It makes good business sense, that’s for sure.

I run for fifteen minutes, and he does weights as he watches me. To be honest, I wish he would look away because I’m dying over here. I can’t run for this long naturally. I’m totally showing off. I may go ass over tit at any moment and skin my knee to the bone.

One man finally leaves the gym, and then five minutes later the other one follows. The group of guys walk out the back, leaving only one woman in the gym who is doing sit ups. His eyes trail over to her, and I wonder is he thinking the same thing as me.

Buzz off, woman. Why are you in the gym so late, stupid?

I stop running and bring the treadmill back to a walking pace. I wipe my face with my towel, grateful when the lady packs up her things and leaves through the front door.

Brock’s eyes find mine in the mirror and a dark smile crosses his face.

Shit. My heart begins to beat faster. I keep walking, and he stands to make his way over to me.

“Hello,” he purrs.

I smile goofily. “Hi.” Why does he have to be so damn sexy? I can’t even pretend to be cool.

He puts his hand over mine on the handrail, and I feel an energy zap between us.

“I’ve been thinking about you all day,” he says.

My eyes hold his as my stomach flips. “Y-you have?” I pant.

He nods slowly, his eyes not leaving mine for a single second.

“What were you thinking about?” I ask.

“I was thinking that I need to talk to you in private.”
God, is he for real? “Is that so?” I look around the empty gym. “Is that why you had to wait for everyone to leave to come and talk to me?”

“Well, I didn’t want anyone to be suspicious of the two of us talking the other night in the bathroom.”

“Talking?” I smirk. “Is that what you call it?”

He smiles sexily, and my stomach clenches yet again. Don’t smile at me like that.

“Yes.” He pauses as he rolls his lips, as if amused. “It was a very stimulating conversation.”
I smile as I continue to walk.

“For some more than others,” he adds.

Unable to help it, I laugh. “Yes, it was a very stimulating conversation that we had the other night.”

His eyes hold mine. “Did you enjoy it?”

What’s it going to be? I get a vision of Simon last night with that girl.

Sink or swim.

“I did.” Our eyes are locked. “Very much, actually.”

Oh, this guy makes me want to be a dirty whore.

Satisfaction flashes across his face and he licks his lips. He runs his hand up my forearm, his eyes following his touch. “I have something else to tell you.”

I act surprised. “You do?”

“I do.”

“What is it?”

“I can’t tell you here, Pocket.” His eyes rise to my lips.

“Why not?” I feel the burn of his gaze.

“It’s private.”

He takes his hand off my arm, and it causes me to frown. I hate the loss of his touch. “So, where do you want to tell me this private information?” I ask as I play along.

“We should probably talk where we talked last time.” He rolls his lips to hide his smile, he likes this game.

“Really?” I widen my eyes.

He nods slowly. “Really.”

I continue to walk on the treadmill.

“So, I’m going to go into the discussion room now.”

“The discussion room?” I widen my eyes and laugh. “You are something else.”

“I know,” he chuckles, and then gestures up to the ceiling. I look up, following his direction.

There’s a camera…

Shit.

“I’m going to go into the discussion room, and in five minutes, you should do the same.”

“But, they’ll see us?” I whisper.

“No, they won’t. Once you come into the bathroom, you just have to stay in there for five minutes. If we don’t enter or leave together, the tapes won’t be looked at. Not unless there is an incident and they have to be watched back.

“Oh.” I frown, and without another word he disappears up the hall with his gym bag. I walk for another five minutes with my heart beating out of control. This is so naughty, so freaking hot, and I have to say, so out of character for me that it’s not even funny.

I’ll just go and talk to him—see what he has to say. I hope he kisses me again. His kiss was to die for. Who the heck is this guy, anyway?

I would never do this. I am not the sort of girl who meets up with guys in a public bathroom. My eyes flicker to the hallway as my excitement runs through me.

Am I?

I hit stop on the treadmill with my heart hammering in my chest. I take my towel and drink bottle, and then I walk up the hall to the bathrooms. I look up and see the camera at the end of the hall positioned so it shows all of the five bathroom doors clearly. I drop my head to hide my face.

As long as I don’t walk back out, he said I’m fine.

God, if anyone ever knew I was doing this, I’d die.

I walk to the end door and take the handle in my hand. I pause for a moment and close my eyes. My heart is banging, and I look back up the hall one more time. Should I go? No. Just do it.

I open the door and rush in, quickly closing the door behind me. I flick the lock and turn around.

The room is filled with steam and the shower screen is open. Brock is naked in the shower when he turns to face me.

His large shoulders and chest have soap over them, and his hair is already wet. His stomach is rippled with muscles, and his huge hard cock hangs heavily between his legs.

He smiles sexily. “Took your time, Pocket.”

Oh, dear God. Holy. Fucking. Shit.

“Brock!” I frown as I stare at him. “What the hell are you doing?”

I glance back to the door, damn it. I can’t leave for a few minutes.

He looks at me casually and rubs the soap in across his chest. “Taking a shower, what does it look like?”

“You’re incredible.” I shake my head in disgust. “I’m leaving right now.”

“Why?” He gives me a slow sexy smile and holds his hands out to the side. “Taking a shower is a perfectly natural thing. I wanted to be clean for our conversation.”

Bastard.

“You want to have a conversation with me with,” I gesture to his groin, “with your dick hanging out.”

He looks down at himself, and then back up at me. “Does my dick offend you?”

“Yes,” I gasp. “Your dick offends me.”

I glance down again. That is the most beautiful dick I’ve ever seen. Okay, sure, I haven’t seen many, but I’m still sure it’s the most perfect one there is. For fuck’s sake, this guy is so over confident, I don’t even have words to describe him, and why the hell is it turning me on?

This is un-fucking-believable. How on earth did I get myself into this situation?

Brock continues to rub soap over his chest, eventually lathering his groin area up, too. I have to concentrate on not looking down again.

“Why?” he asks.

I frown. “Because… because…” I look around as I search for the right choice of words. “It’s the assumption you make that I am comfortable with you being naked when I’m not.” I shake my head and throw my hands in the air. “I’m so not.”

“If it makes you feel more comfortable, I am completely fine with you taking your clothes off, too.” He shrugs casually. “You know, for our discussion.”

I smirk. Of all the hide. “You’re an idiot.”

He smiles that sexy smile again, and I feel my insides begin to melt. “I prefer to think I’m just honest.”

“How is this being honest?”

“Well.” He pauses as a moment as he soaps his groin up again.

“Will you stop doing that!” I snap. “It’s very distracting.” I concentrate hard on keeping my eyes focused on his face.

“Big dicks don’t lie,” he says, raising his brow.

I stare at him, completely lost for words, even though I really want to howl with laughter. “You did not just say that?”

Blog Tour: Sunny Shelly Reviews Ruffles & Beaus by Carina Adams

Title: Ruffles & Beaus
Author: Carina Adams
Genre: NA Romance/Love Triangle
Published: August 23, 2018

Every girl who dances on a pole has a story to tell, one that led her to the stage.

My last year of college was set to be the best yet. Only a few months stood between me and the life of my dreams. Until my manager was arrested for embezzlement, our department was wiped out, and everything fell apart.

I needed a job. I was willing to do anything to pay for school, hoping to simply survive. Desperate, I joined Soirée, the private party company that offered something no other did.

I wasn’t prepared for Roman, the boss who thought I was helpless and hated me as much as I detested him. Or, his best friend Reid, who assumed I was tougher than I was and pursued me in a way no one else ever had.

I never used a pole, yet I took my clothes off as men cheered. My past didn’t lead me there, though.

My story began with the secrets I told as I fell in love with two very different men.
And continued with the lies I weaved to keep us all from breaking.

Great story with some great characters. Cady’s life is kind of a mess, but she does something out of her comfort zone and her life is forever changed.

This story took some twists that I wasn’t expecting. But aren’t those the best stories? Roman is a surly beast, and Reid is such a sweetheart. But this love triangle wasn’t quite what I was expecting.

I loved Cady’s tribe. They are fiercely loyal girls, and just rally around one another. I really enjoyed this story, and I hope that there is more to come with this group of characters because there is certainly unfinished business! I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

I stood there, a helpless bystander, as he gave her the same grin he’d always used on the adults to get himself out of trouble when we were kids. The one that said he was sweet and innocent and could be trusted. Lying asshole. Cady responded with a slow, lazy smile of her own, one filled with promises I couldn’t even comprehend.
Not happening. My fingers locked around her upper arm and I hauled her to her feet before I knew what I was doing. “I’ve got it,” I snarled in his direction before I half dragged her up the stairs and down the hall to my room.
With every step we took she sputtered like an angry wet cat and tried to shake me off. My grip only tightened. As soon as we were in my room, with the lights on and the heavy door locked safely behind us, I let her push me away.
“What in the hell are you doing?”
“You said you were exhausted.” I lifted my chin toward the bed in the middle of the room as I dropped my suit jacket on the floor and pulled off my tie. “Get some rest.”
“There’s no couch. Where are you going to sleep?”
I had my shirt unbuttoned and on the pile before I answered. “You’re a smart girl. You figure it out.”
As I reached for the button on my pants, she nodded once. “Okay. So, I’ll be in Andy’s room.”
I lunged for her as she was twisting the handle, squishing her body between the door and me, my hands on top of hers, halting her. I hadn’t been prepared for how she’d feel. She wasn’t built like my other dancers, shorter and curvier, but I hadn’t stopped to think about how soft that would make her body. It was oddly comforting, and I wanted to sink into it and let her surround me.
Fighting whatever craziness my mind had started to manifest, I put my mouth to her ear, needing her to hear me. “If you leave this room, I will spank your ass. I’m too fucking wasted to take on every man here, but don’t think I’m too far gone to haul you back to this room, tie you to the bed, and punish you.”
Glimpses of that scenario ran through my mind, making me instantly hard. I had no idea where the thought had come from. I’d never tied any woman to my bed, or any where else, and I sure as shit had never spanked anyone in more than a playful manner. It should have disgusted me.
We must have gotten a bad bottle of booze. It hadn’t been stored right or something. Maybe one of Alistair’s loser friends laced it.
Instead of throwing her head back into my face and breaking my nose, or reacting the way any sensible woman would, Cady’s breath caught and she shivered underneath me. Not from fear or cold, but because my words had gotten to her.
She moved her head back slightly, fitting it into the spot between my neck and shoulder. Neither of us said a word. Her scent, one I didn’t recognize, invaded my nostrils. I fought the urge to turn her around and kiss her, to beg her to let me fuck her against the door for the entire house to hear.
Her breathing grew more ragged by the second and I knew that she was feeling it, this undeniable attraction. She spun, her back to the door, perfect fat tits shoving into my chest, and I couldn’t think anymore. My fist wound itself into her hair, holding her in place, as I leaned down in slow motion, almost daring her to push me away, and captured her lips with mine.
She tasted like strawberries and whiskey, her mouth warm and captivating as she gave me exactly what I wanted. It wasn’t enough. I bit her bottom lip lightly, tugging it open, so my tongue could find hers.
Fingernails traced down my bare chest, exploring. When they ran over my abs, Cady groaned as if it was the most delightful thing she’d ever touched. The sound made my dick jump. I worked hard for the body I had, pushed myself to stay in shape, so I could accomplish all the things I wanted. It was a bonus to know she appreciated the effort.
Jealousy, that she got to touch me while I was acting like a saint and keeping my hands in PG zones, hit me. I broke the kiss and stepped back, ready to strip her out of the ugly baggy clothes she’d put on and worship her body. She wasn’t fooling me. I’d seen enough during practices and the performance to know exactly what she was hiding.
In spectacular fuckface timing, Andrew chose that moment to pound on the door. “Yo, asshole. You forgot your phone. Reid’s blowing it up.”
Cady ducked and spun away from the wood, backing toward the bed, eyes wide as they darted around the room. Before I could offer an explanation, or beg her to give me five minutes to get rid of the pest problem outside our door and get back to business, the brat smirked at me. Then she began to laugh.
“Well,” she dragged her teeth over her lip making me groan inwardly, “that was a surprise. No more alcohol for us.”
Andy knocked again.
“You get that. I’m going to go to bed. To sleep.” She clarified. “And then you’re going to come to bed. For sleep. So we can get up in a few hours and pretend this never happened.”
“That’s how we’re playing this?”
“Partners don’t have sex, remember? It’s against the rules.”
Fuck the goddamned stupid rules. I hated them. I was going to rewrite the employee manual first thing on Monday.
Cady chuckled, as if she could hear my thoughts. “No, you’re not. They’re good rules. You don’t want to sleep with me. You’re just drunk.”
“I said that out loud?”
She giggled again and I couldn’t stop my own answering smile. “You did.” She moved forward, pushing me out of the way slightly, and opened the door. “Give it to me,” she held out her hand.
“Come next door and I will,” Andy’s husky voice replied as he handed her my iPhone. “I’ll give it to you so dirty you’ll be begging me for more.”
Without a reply, she backed up quickly and slammed the door in his face.  He obviously didn’t like his head attached to his body because I was going to remove it if he didn’t cut the shit.
“Here,” she didn’t wait for me to take it, but shoved the phone into my chest instead. “Call Reid. Tell him you’re too drunk to drive, that I’m not any better, and that we’re staying here. It’s been an,” her gaze settled on my stomach and her teeth scraped across her lips, “interesting first day at my new job and I’m exhausted.”
With a quick tug, her sweatshirt was over her head and on the floor, taunting me, before she face-planted herself onto the bed. “Good night.” It was no more than a mumble. The brat was out cold in seconds.
I didn’t dial Reid’s number. Or anyone else. He hadn’t been the only one who had called repeatedly. I especially didn’t want to deal with the force that was Livie tonight. Not when I was drunk and I had a hot as fuck woman in my bed.
No. Cady wasn’t hot. Cady was Ruffles, my employee. The bitter, snarky, clueless one. I wasn’t attracted to her.
She definitely wasn’t Brooke. I wanted my fiancé back. And only my fiancé.
Which is why it was perfectly safe for me to climb up onto the bed next to Cady. Friends could sleep in the same bed. The small width of the full size mattress wasn’t something I was used to, which was the only reason I threw an arm around her and hauled her back into my chest. She was soft and warm, which was why I dropped kisses onto her neck, inhaling her body spray, telling myself I loved the scent and needed to find out what it was.
It was all fine. Completely innocent. Nothing more.

“Sir?” The security guard phones in from downstairs. “There’s a woman here insisting she needs to speak with you.”

“Name?”

“Josephine Mays.”

“Let her in.”

I turn off the intercom and unlock my office door. A few minutes pass before the door flies open. Josie barges in, her hands fisted and an angry light in her eyes.

“You are an asshole,” she snaps.

“I’ve been told.”

“How dare you pull that kind of stunt?”

“It’s the truth.”

“And we both know damned well you brought it up only because I’m involved.” She tosses her backpack and art portfolio onto a chair. She’s trembling with anger. “I don’t care what you think about me, but bringing the people of this town into our personal shit is low, even for you.”

My shoulders tense. “Even for me? What do you know about me?”

“Nothing anymore.” She slams her hands to her hips, her features twisting. “But I used to know everything about you. Do you remember that? Then you walked out on me right when I needed you the most, proving you were never the man I thought you were. Now I find out that you run this company like a dictator, you’re crushing independent businesses and putting people out of work, and you’re publicly trying to stop me from creating a mural that’s intended for both this town and my parents. What the hell happened to you?”

You happened to me.”

The words fly out of my mouth before I can stop them. The pencil I’m holding breaks in two with the force of my grip.

Josie steps back, her eyes widening. Her dark hair is windblown, her cheeks flushed, her chest heaving under her old army jacket. I’d once had the right to comb her hair back from her forehead, slide my palm over her neck before edging my fingers into her V-necked T-shirt…

Anger crushes my chest. I shove away from my desk and stride toward her. Fear flashes in her green eyes, which pisses me off even more. When the fuck was she ever afraid of me?

I grab the lapels of her jacket, yanking her closer. Our lower bodies collide. She gasps, a little catching noise in the back of her throat that used to get me hot in a second.

It still does. My blood starts to boil. She tilts her head back, her eyes flashing. I lower my head to look at her, fighting to ignore her scent—goddamned summer leaves and cherry candy.

“I once would have done anything for you.” The words grate roughly from my throat. “And then I failed you in the worst possible way. I failed you, I failed Teddy, and I failed your parents.”

She stares at me, her eyes widening. “Cole, I—”

“When you left, I hoped with everything I was that you’d have a chance at a normal life.” I pull her closer, anger warring with the undeniable flare of lust. “That you could be happy again if you weren’t constantly surrounded by reminders of everything you lost. Everything I took from you.”

“Goddamn you, Cole Danforth.” Fire flames over her expression. She plants her hands on my chest and shoves herself away. “The only thing you took from me was you.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

Just Exes is so much more than a second-chance romance for Lauren and Gage! The blurb is what got me interested in reading this book, but the story absolutely gutted me!

Gage’s life has been completely destroyed, first by high school sweetheart Lauren, and then by the next woman he got involved with. He’s carrying around a massive weight on his shoulders as a result of both relationships, and his hatred for both women runs pretty deep. Lauren has no idea that he’s moved back to their small hometown until he’s the arresting officer who shows up at the scene the day that her sleezy landlord accuses her of burning down the apartment building.

As much as he tells himself that he despises Lauren, though, it’s not long before Gage realizes that she still gets his heart racing. So inviting her to move into the garage apartment seems like a great idea! As they start to hang out once again, Lauren slowly begins to break through his defenses. But when it comes to an explanation as to why she left him all those years ago, Lauren won’t answer. And the mystery surrounding why Gage left Chicago and moved back home is something he refuses to talk about. So how will these two ever work through their issues — and Gage has some pretty dark demons — if they aren’t talking about the big stuff?

There are several plots that are taking place at once, but they are all woven together seamlessly. What Gage had gone through was heartbreaking, and not at all the turn that I expected this story to take! This is not quite a happy-go-lucky second chance romance — there is some dark stuff in here. But it is a marvelous story. Charity Ferrell is a new-to-me reader, so I had no idea that Lauren’s brother had previously had their own books. The characters cross over, but I never felt as if there was backstory that I was unaware of while reading Just Exes.

It sounds so simple, to love someone unconditionally.

To give them your heart.

She said yes, and yet, in order for her to be with me . . . I need to let her go.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

It’s been two days since I read Left Side and I don’t know what I want to say about this book!! As much as I loved The Blue Line Duet, I was left very unsettled by the ending bc Colby was the one I wanted to get the girl.

So I dove into Left Side really hoping that Colby would get his HEA. This story is really angsty, but also about a beautiful friendship. Colby is such a stand-up Guy, despite his precision and devotion to his career as a result of his traumatic childhood. He’s definitely swoon-worthy as far as book boyfriends go.

Without naming names… I loved how raw and insecure Girl 1 is. My heart broke for her. I thought her chemistry with Colby was explosive.

Girl 2…. she was nice enough. I didn’t dislike her, but I didn’t adore her the way I did Girl 1, who I was so shipping for Colby.

The ending left me screaming at my kindle, which I’m sure was MQ’s intention! Thankfully, this duet is releasing together, so I was able to dive into the Right Side Of Forever.

This is NOT a standalone, ends on a WHOPPING CLIFFHANGER and you should read The Blue Line Duet first to get to know all that Colby’s been to up to this point.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

But one stolen kiss leads to a number of stolen nights blurring the line
between hatred and love.
Elle’s curse of bad luck may be taking a turn, or she could be facing her
toughest obstacle yet – heartbreak.

Sunny Shell

This was a wonderful enemies-to-lovers, neighbors romance! I got sucked into this story and read it right through!

Elle’s life has pretty much fallen apart — her husband took everything in the divorce, he’s expecting a baby with her former best friend, and essentially abandoned their kids. So Elle moves into the house left to her by the biological father she barely knew…. where she must share a driveway with the surliest, smuggest, most arrogant a## she’s ever met.
I love how the connection that Jackson feels for Elle hit him out of nowhere. The guy who decided that kids were too much work fell for Elle’s adorable tykes as he fell for her. I totally fell for this couple as they stole a few kisses in the night. I wish that there would have been more explanation as to Elle’s father/Jackson’s neighbor — a lot more could have been explored there. But this was a well-written story by an author new to me, and I enjoyed it very much!

Synopsis

I’ve always done what was expected of me. I married the man that my family thought I was supposed to. I turned a blind eye when his after work activities weren’t really for work. What I couldn’t look past anymore was how lonely I’d become.

All it took was one night to change my life.

I filed for a separation.
I moved my teenage daughter and me in with my parents.
Did I mention that my room should be placed in an 80’s museum? Yes, it’s not changed in decades.

Then my life changed again right before my 40th birthday.

Just when I thought things were going to get back to normal, in walks Lenny Ward. He’s the man your parents warn you about. You know the type… A body like a God, smart, oh and the sex… It’s like a 10.0 earthquake off the charts type of connection.
Even though we have chemistry, I have to protect not only my heart but my daughters.

Excerpt

The only good thing that David and I accomplished well was creating Sophia. She’s smart, her own person, and not spoiled by David’s family. Yes, I married up and into a family that has more roots in this town than the hundred-year-old oak tree in the middle of the park. The problem with upgrading my lifestyle all those years ago—they have better lawyers and money to keep this short and straightforward process drawn out until they’re all ready to give up. I might not have my house or anything from within those walls other than my clothes and a few items that I was able to pack up, but I do have my company. That’s one thing David can’t touch.
Designs by Jules is mine and mine alone. I started my own company before we married, and have put blood, sweat, and tears in that place from the day I opened the doors. Other than the custody of Sophia, this is my fight. Without my business, what would we have left? A name that means nothing to me anymore. A life where I’m confused on where I went wrong in my marriage. A life that I’m living with my parents.
“Mom,” I hear Sophia’s voice filter through the door.
“I’m up,” I respond as I sit up in the small bed and pull the comforter up a little further as if I need it for protection. As Sophia enters my room, I take in her beauty. The way her curly red hair resembles mine, the way she’s paired ripped jeans with a half off-the-shoulder black top, matched with her black and white checkered Chucks—she’s artistic in her style, combining a mixture from the 80’s to today’s shabby chic look. What she doesn’t wear, however, are dresses with frill or lace. Throughout the years, David and I did agree on letting Sophia find herself, and not molding her to what our families wanted. She’s smart and would find her way. She expresses herself with clothing, and as long as she’s not covered in a hundred percent black or dying her hair black, we’re good with this.
“We need to move, have you seen this?” she asks as she holds up a baby pink tennis skirt and white top with a thin pink stripe along the bottom. I try to hold back, but I can’t. A burst of laughter falls from my lips. It’s not that I’m laughing at her. I’m laughing because it’s been less than twenty-four hours, and the first outfit has already been purchased.
“Sophia, I’m afraid there’s more where that came from.”
“Mom, I am not wearing this, and you can’t make me.”
“I’m not, but you might want to hide from your grandmother.”
“She can’t make me either. This is totally not fair,” she states as she plops down on the edge of my bed, nearly tossing me from it. I lean forward, placing my hand on her back before I respond. “Sophia, I know this is a change, but I promise it’s not forever. I’ll start looking today, and we’ll find someplace new.”
“Whatever,” she states, and quickly stands before turning back to look at me. “Grandma wants you down for breakfast. She’s on the warpath—just a warning.”
“Thanks, kid. I’ll be down in just a few,” I say, offering her a smile for reassurance that our lives will be okay again. I’m worried about what this is doing to her internally. When I told Sophia about the upcoming divorce, her response was, “Not shocked, Mom. Seen it coming years ago.” I couldn’t help but wonder if she’d walked in on her father before over the years. Did she hear rumors, witness the action for herself? I asked, and she told me she hadn’t, but she did sense it. She also reminds me that I don’t smile anymore—that it’s been a long time since she’s seen a genuine smile on my face. That was the moment I knew I had to get her out of the negative energy. Even though my parents will drive us crazy, this house is a place I can smile and be myself. Well, to a point.
Tossing off the blankets, I stand and make my way over to my tiny closet. Rummaging through, I find my black pencil skirt and turquoise silk button-up top and hold them close together. Today is an important day, a day that could take my company to the next level if hired. We really need this contract with Ward Properties. Not just for the spotlight of being the one design company in Savannah to handle all their properties, but I need this for us. I want to show Sophia that no matter how hard life is, the right thing still happens, and that even though her father isn’t beside me anymore, I can still be the fierce and determined woman who started Designs by Jules.
Quickly, I dress and throw on a little makeup, trying to conceal the black circles I’ve got going on under my eyes. My shoulder-length auburn hair is uncontrollable this morning. I twist it in a low ponytail and tame down the flyaways that frame my pale complexion. Stepping back, I do a quick once-over, verifying that everything looks put together well. It’s easy to hide the mess that’s resting inside. With a sharp exhale, I take off downstairs and brace myself for this morning’s events.
“Good Morning, Jules. It’s nice of you to join us for breakfast,” my mother states in a tone that’s not welcoming.
“Morning, Mother. Where’s Sophia?”
“Your father took her to school, and I’ll pick her up this afternoon for you,” she states without looking away from her newspaper.
“I’ll pick her up. Thanks, though.”
“Don’t you have work today, or are you blowing that off as well?”
“Stop, Mother. I’m not blowing anything off, and this is our routine. I take her to school, I go to work, I pick her up, and then I come home to cook.”
“Yes, but that was your old routine. Don’t you need us to help?”
“No, you’re doing enough as it is,” I state as I pull down a travel mug so I can fill it with coffee and get the hell out of here before I say something I’ll regret.
“Suit yourself, but I have Bridge tonight, so dinner will be in the oven before I leave.”
“Yes, ma’am.” I really need to get out of here and to the office before my meeting. “I’ve gotta go, see you this afternoon,” I state as I place a gentle kiss on the side of her face and take off. Once outside on the porch, I let the air I was holding in my chest out in one long sigh.
“That was better than I expected,” I say as I open the door to my Camry and slide in.
****
After driving across town to my office, I park and sit here for a moment, taking everything in. I’ve spent weeks preparing for this meeting; drawing up new designs and putting together a presentation that would knock Mr. Ward off his rocker. I’ve heard rumors about him, about the company, and never thought in a million years that I would have an interview for being their chief designer. Lenny Ward is close to my age but was always out of my league when we were kids. I’d only ran into him a few times over the years since we had different social circles. That, meaning, I was married and he was very single. It seems that the single guys aren’t at the club while the ladies play Bridge on the weekend.
Lenny Ward has been described as vicious, cold, a player, and downright brutal when it comes to his family’s business. Never in all the years of design have I felt this nervous to present my ideas. If they like the ones I have today, I’ll be contracted to design all their homes to come, including the mock houses. If I’m passed over, it’s back to the drawing board. It’s time to take off the Southern gloves and play hardball with the man who could ruin it all.
