Sunny Shelly’s Review: Nothing But Trouble, by Ashley Bostock

Nothing But Trouble
Ashley Bostock
Publication date: August 28th 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Billionaire CEO Michael Vilander needed just one date. Creating a fake profile on his own matchmaking website may not have been his brightest move. But then Sophia Baldwin’s arresting face pops up on his CHAT NOW feature. Not only is she gorgeous, but after spending half the night exchanging messages with her, he finds her to be naive, innocent and way too sexy.

Twenty-four-year-old Sophia Baldwin is barely able to make ends meet. Caring for her sick grandmother prevents her from having a normal life—aspirations of attending college full-time to become a nurse are on the back burner—but then she meets the charming and dazzling Clint on an online dating site. When he asks her to the Denver Arts Foundation’s Annual Valentine’s Day Gala, she’s confident things are looking up.

Once Sophia learns that her hot date is none other than website mogul Michael Vilander, she’s definitely not mentioning her night job. What’s a lie by omission anyway? After all, it’s only one date…Until Michael’s ex flaunts her fancy engagement ring in Michael’s face and something compels Sophia to announce her and Michael’s engagement. AKA, fake engagement. They agree on one month to pretend they’re in love before all bets are off.

Pretending to be in love with a sweet and sexy billionaire, but not actually falling in love, ahem, how hard could it be?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

This story is pretty standard fare, billionaire/virgin pairing. It is rather predictable and follows the format that we’ve all come to expect from the trope, but it just lacked that punch that had me anxiously awaiting for Michael and Sophie’s fauxmance to turn real.

There were parts that felt a bit choppy to me, and the dialogue between the characters came off as unnatural at times. I just didn’t fall in love with Michael and Sophie.

If you want a billionaire romance with a HEA, then this story is definitely worth checking out. But I didn’t find it to be one that I absolutely could not put down, and don’t see myself coming back for a reread.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Reckless Miles Cover.jpg

Reckless Miles by Claire Kingsley

Cover Design: Pink Ink Designs

Release Date: September 21, 2018

Synopsis:

I love being naked. Naked is awesome.” ~Cooper Miles

Life used to be an endless party. I worked hard and played harder (as often as possible). But things change—people change—and lately the party life isn’t doing it for me.

Enter Amelia. It isn’t every day that you meet a girl in a wedding dress in a bar. A girl whose life just took a sharp left turn she wasn’t expecting.

Kissing her? It’s no big deal—totally just for fun. She’s had one hell of a day, and a little kissing lesson by Cooper is bound to make her feel better. Getting in a little dig at the dumbass who left her at the altar is a bonus.

The invitation back to her hotel? That, I wasn’t expecting.

Saying yes to her is reckless. Not because I’m a stranger to a one-night-stand. And not because she’s in a wedding dress, and the words this is my first time cross her lips.

Saying yes to Amelia is reckless because she’s making me feel things I’ve never felt before—big things. Nothing scares me. But this girl? She might be magic, and I have no idea what to do with that.

If I had to pick a bride of convenience, my first choice would NOT be
Peach Maloney.
My fiftieth choice would NOT be Peach.
Top spot on my list of occupational hazards? Yes.
Royal pain in the ass?  Yes.
A bride of convenience? No.
But I’ve unexpectedly gone from royal bodyguard to monarch, having
inherited a crown that was stolen from my family long before my birth. The
kicker of this unexpected royal gift? In order to take the throne I must find a

Have I mentioned Peach would NOT have been my hundredth choice?
But I’ve no other options, and she needs a favor that my new position
can fulfill quite nicely. So we’ve agreed to play the doting newlyweds out in
public.
In private, though, our rules are simple:

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Pippa Grant expands the circle of friends in Hot Heir with a marriage-of-convenience story between bodyguard Viktor and sassy Southern Belle Peaches. Like every other book in this series. Pippa gives lots of charm, lots of awkward but hilarious moments, and two characters that you are cheering for from the get-go.

Royal bodyguard Viktor learns that he’s the heir to his own kingdom… but needs to be married. Peaches needs to retain custody of her teenaged sister, but the judge won’t give it to her unless she’s married. A marriage of convenience is born between the two completely opposite characters, but they are just so perfect together, they fit.

Even though Peaches and Viktor were peripheral characters in other books and I never imagined that they’d get their own stories… it just worked! I love this crazy group of characters that PG has created and I hope she continues to give us more!

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Cover Design: Daqri Bernardo / Covers by Combs

Synopsis

Meet bad boy catcher, A.J. Gonzalez…

When I stood Mia up eight years ago, I never dreamed I’d run into her again. But here she is, making me look like a fool in front of thousands of fans.

The sweet, innocent girl never knew why I left. But I had my reason. A good one. In no way was I worthy enough for Mia Gunner. Today, grown up and hotter than ever, she’s still too good for me. But when she walks by, wearing those skin-tight leggings, that doesn’t stop me from wanting that taste I denied myself. And I get it.

Almost.

It turns out; Mia isn’t through plotting her sweet revenge. Now, left in a not so compromising position, Mia won’t have anything to do with me.

That is until we find ourselves in another awkward situation. When I think life can’t get more complicated, Mia packs a few more surprises. And believe me, she may not be as timid as I once thought.

I can’t help wanting her, but I need to stay away. Especially with our paths taking different courses. But I’ve never been one to back away from a challenge. It’s the bottom of the ninth. Time to score. I’ll either step to the plate or strike out. No matter what happens, this will definitely be a December I’ll never forget.

Excerpt

“Why the hell do I look like a half-naked lumberjack elf?” I snap the red suspenders against my bare chest and glance at the green velvet boy shorts. Red triangles, with actual gold jingle bells, trim the waistband. Fucking bells. But I don’t know which is worse—the redonkulous suspenders or the green felt elf shoes with pointed toes curling upward, capped with more damn bells. I jingle like a powder-puff princess cat every time I move.

“You look…cute?” Jax, my soon-to-be-former roommate says, suppressing a grin.

“Fuck you. Trade me costumes; I’ll be Mr. Fourth of July.”

He flanks my side, wearing red-and-white-striped pants and a matching patriotic hat. He’s like a beefed-up Uncle Sam. I don’t understand why I couldn’t have gotten that costume.

“No way, man. I’m not wearing that thing.”

“So much for helping a guy out.” The words no more than fall out of my lips when Mr. April, better known as Zach, our ace closer, walks by with a large pastel Easter egg tucked under his arm.

Zach stops midstride and sizes me up, the horror of my outfit reflecting in his bulging eyes. Perfect. His jaw drops, and he stands there gaping like a fish.

“Uh, I just… Yeah, MVP announcement party at my house. And I’ll”—Zach’s voice drops as his bunny paws carry him away—“stop complaining about my outfit.”

My blood boils. Sure, his silky boy shorts have tiny bunnies draped everywhere, but he pulls it off. I do a quick check of the other teammates and conclude I’m the only creepy one. When I agreed to be Mr. December, I thought a Santa Claus hat with sexy underwear would be my costume. Not this hideous contraption.

“Why the hell are we even here?” I grumble more to myself.

“You know why. Just grin and bear it.” Jax’s gaze roams along my outfit, and his lips press tightly together. Despite his best efforts, his shoulders start to shake, and a huge grin slowly stretches across his face. He snorts as he turns to leave and slaps my butt, the jingling sound drawing out the overdue laugh.

Bastard.

If Jax weren’t dating someone, I’d kick him in his nuts. His girlfriend may not like me much for that, though. Who I’d actually like to cock punch is Drake, our secondary catcher. Not only is the asshole vying for my spot on the team, but he’s the reason we’re here. His sister organized this fiasco disguised as a photo shoot.

I bite back a swear word. Yeah, the Ass Award goes to me for complaining. The calendar—the reasoning behind the photos—is for a good cause. I mean, it’s kind of hard to be upset when all proceeds go toward St. Claire Children’s Cancer Research Hospital. And that is the reason certain teammates agreed to stay in town a few days longer. Back-to-back World Series wins make for two long seasons, and everyone’s ready to return to their homes, families, and normal offseason lives.

With a deep breath, I look up to the ceiling to calm myself. It works. The metal I-beam framework pulls my attention away from myself, and I get lost in the architectural design. For an old abandoned warehouse, the building isn’t in bad shape, but it doesn’t take long before martial arts fight scenes flit through my mind. Blame the lackluster lighting and open-floor plan, but any minute, I swear ninja warriors will pop out from their hiding spots and spring into action.

I shake my head. I may need to cut back on the Kung Fu flicks on the El Rey Network.

Our right fielder walks by, and his chortle tramples upon my peaceful zen. Fuck! Charity or not, I look like a freaking creeper elf.

“This calendar better bring in tons of money,” I mumble beneath my breath.

“Oh, it will. Don’t worry.”

My back muscles tighten, causing me to stand straighter. That voice. That familiar voice glides over my skin and awakens every repressed give-a-shit feeling while simultaneously bringing forth every ounce of unworthiness. It’s been too long since I relished that sound. The sweet voice that made me cave and lowered my guard even if it was temporary.

I turn to face the woman I never dreamed of seeing again and force myself not to stumble. The sight of her hits me like a base runner colliding into me at home plate—sharp and painful but somehow satisfying. An eyebrow disappears beneath her blonde bangs as if challenging me to recognize her. How could I not? Of all the stupid things I’ve done—and believe me, there have been a lot—my treatment toward her has been my biggest regret.

But here she is in the flesh, standing in front of me with those electric blue eyes. How? Why? Confusion swirls in my brain before the synapses finally accept the charge and I utter a single word.

“Cupcake?”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Unwritten Law, by Eden Finley

Release Date: September 5, 2018

Cover Design: Angsty G

Synopsis

Being an identical twin doesn’t come without issues.

No one can tell us apart, not even our parents sometimes. We don’t usually use that to our advantage, but it comes in handy when my brother needs help breaking up with his boyfriends—which happens more than I’d care to admit. I know it’s enabling him, but I can’t say no to Anders. I will do anything for my twin. The breakups always go the same; they’re swift and simple.

Until Reed.

He’s everything I’ve fantasised about but never allowed myself to have. When I give in to temptation and begin to freak out, it’s not because he’s a guy. It’s because he thinks I’m my brother, and I can’t bring myself to tell him the truth.

Goodreads

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I had some issues going into this book because the ENTIRE story is set upon a lie. And I get that the mistaken identity between Law and his twin is the basis for what brings he and Reed together, but I generally have issues with betrayals like that in stories. Law had so many opportunities to come clean with Reed, and he didn’t.

That said… this was actually quite enjoyable. I don’t read many M/M romances (no particular reason), but I definitely liked the romance that unfolded between the main characters. Law is struggling to make peace with what he’s feeling, and has lived his life kind of closeted because of his twin. The relationship between Law and Anders is so co-dependent and dysfunctional in many ways (even though it is all done out of love and protection), so it was a nice journey that the brothers went on in learning how to live their lives apart from one another.

I really liked Reed as well. He was understandably devastated by Law’s betrayal, but he wasn’t totally up front about things either. So I was glad that he didn’t hold the lie over Law’s head for very long.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I read Flirting With Forever in the car today while driving home from vacation and it checked all the boxes for a feel-good friends-to-lovers story.

It’s a slow burn between Camden and Natalie, but the developing feelings they both have are complicated by the third best friend, Jake, and how neither of them want to ruin the Three Amigos thing they have going on.

I was expecting some big conflict or blowout to occur since there is a third friend somewhat involved, but this book was surprisingly drama-free. Both main characters are likable, they don’t do anything wild and crazy that turned me off, and they didn’t play games with one another. Flirting With Forever is exactly the kind of feel-good best friends romance I love. Another great story from Kendall Ryan!

Cover Reveal: Gravel Road, by Stephie Walls

Release Date: September 27, 2018

Cover Design: Wicked by Design

Model: Steve Kalfman

Synopsis

I fell in love with Austin before I even knew what the word meant.

Miranda was the only girl who ever had a chance at owning my heart.

Defined by the land we grew up on—ranches, pastures, lakes—Mason Belle, Texas, wrote our story. And then it tore out the pages.

Six years later, Miranda had managed to slip away again. But this time, I refused to let her run.

Goodreads

Excerpt

Miranda lifted her hand to tuck her hair behind her ear. Like a movie, a flashback of the past, a vision of eighteen-year-old Randi, blinked before me. I’d always found that habit seductive, primarily because she wasn’t conscious of the fact that she did it when she was nervous. I loved the innocence in her expression and the way her eyes almost cowered behind her lashes. It was pure and as close to angelic as Randi ever got.

It took effort to soften my tone. I ignored the bell that rang over the door. She was on the defensive. If I wanted to have a discussion, I’d have to make her believe she was safe. “Can we talk?”

Her pupils narrowed, though her expression remained flat. “About?”

I’d thought about this conversation more times than I could count, yet when the chance to have it arose, my mind went blank. I shrugged. “What have you been up to?”

She shook her head in disbelief. “Really? You have me alone in a corner, and that’s the question you want an answer to?”

No. It wasn’t even the tip of the iceberg. “It’s a good place to start.”

Miranda shifted in the seat, uncrossing her legs and crossing them again. She was thinner than she had been in high school. I hadn’t noticed it so much on the ranch, yet sitting across from her, it was quite obvious. “Okay… I moved to New York. I met Eason the day I got off the bus. He helped me get into school for paralegal work and hired me in his law firm. We’ve lived together since, and I still work at the practice.”

She’d summed up six years in a handful of meaningless sentences that told me nothing other than stats I could have found on Facebook if she used social media.

“Are you happy?” It came out before I realized what I’d said.

The question appeared to surprise her as much as it had me. “Sure. New York’s a great place to live.” There was no smile in her voice, nothing that indicated she loved life.

That wasn’t a ringing endorsement. Warning bells, sirens, whistles, they all went off in my head. For a girl who’d been with a man as long as Miranda had Eason, I expected more. He obviously defined her life if she lived with him and worked for him.

“Is Eason good to you?”

Her features scrunched, and that look was all Randi. The Randi I’d loved. The one who died the day that car crashed. “Of course.” She appeared offended, yet she didn’t defend him.

Miranda watched me intently, although she remained quiet. I hadn’t realized until that moment how desperate I was to hear the sound of her voice, to engage in a normal conversation. I wanted to forget the last six years and pretend like there’d never been an accident. I’d kill to see her tilt her head back in laughter or witness one genuine smile.

“I’m not going to bite you, Miranda. You can talk. We can catch up. That’s what friends do.” Friends. I hated that word. She’d never be a friend. We may never be anything more again, but I’d never place her in that category in my life.

“I don’t know what to say, Austin. You’ve made it pretty clear how you feel about me since I arrived at the ranch.”

I needed something to do with my hands. They shook beneath the table, and if I didn’t get my nerves under control, I’d start babbling. “I’m sorry.” I paused, and her facial muscles relaxed. “I wasn’t expecting to see you.” It was an excuse. “Not that anyone had to warn me.” And that sounded awful. “I didn’t recognize you.” That was the painful truth.

She wrapped her hands around her mug, yet she didn’t lift it. Her thumb traced circles on the ceramic. “I don’t look all that different.” It wasn’t just her appearance. “So, what was it then?”

“You cut your hair.” There were days I marveled at my conversational brilliance.

She grazed her fingertips over the ends self-consciously. “You don’t like it?”

I wasn’t sure why it mattered if I did or didn’t. “You always loved your hair. I’m just surprised.”

“Is that it?”

I couldn’t figure out how to get away from this. “I don’t know. You don’t sound like you, anymore. And you showed up in a limo for Christ’s sake. You looked like you stepped off the runway, not an airplane.” I didn’t mean to be harsh. “It caught me off guard.”

A tear trickled down her cheek. “If anyone had told me you worked at the ranch, I wouldn’t have come.”

My chest constricted painfully. All these years, I’d believed she hid from Jack. Now I had to wonder if it was me.

She swallowed hard and closed her eyes. When she opened them, any emotion that had surfaced had cleared. They were empty again, soulless. “I didn’t mean it the way you took it.”

“How’d you mean it?”

Charity came around with the coffee at the perfect moment for Miranda and the wrong one for me. It didn’t escape my attention, or Miranda’s for that matter, that Charity refused to look at her and only spoke to me. People in Mason Belle hurt for a long time over Miranda’s disappearance. And if they continued to treat her the way Charity and I had, they wouldn’t have to worry about her ever returning.

She waited for Charity to leave before she responded. “I owe you an explanation. You more than anyone.” There was a pause, and I was afraid if I filled the silence then she’d quit talking. “I never meant to hurt you.”

I ached, seeing her this way. Nothing about her had healed in New York. She’d withered into something unrecognizable. “What did he do?” I whispered.

“It doesn’t matter.”

But it did. Without regard for my actions, I reached out and placed my hand on top of hers. “You can always come home.” I didn’t have a clue where that had come from. Mason Belle would not open its arms to the princess who’d shunned them, not without a lot of explanation.

She snickered, and her shoulders dropped. She did not, however, remove her hand from underneath mine, and I took the chance to give her fingers a gentle squeeze.

“It’s not that easy, Austin.”

I kept my voice low. “Why not?”

“Sometimes you can’t come home.”

That was bullshit. It might be uncomfortable. People might expect apologies. Even still, she absolutely could make that choice, just like she’d made one to leave.

“Why? Because of some guy? Some job? A fancy town? You can leave every bit of that behind.”

She stared at me with wonder instead of gall.

“If you want to come back, you can. But it would take the gumption of the girl I knew, not the one who showed up in a Hummer with a man in a suit.”

As if I’d slapped her, the mention of Eason had her withdrawing her hand. “And just walk away from my life?”

“You’ve done it before.”

She flattened her lips and nodded defensively…slowly. “And there it is.”

“Damn, Randi. Come on. What do you expect?”

“Nothing. That’s why I’ve tried to keep my distance. You came looking for me, remember?”

“Your sister sent me.”

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a wad of cash. “Of course, she did. I should have known you’d never come on your own. God knows you never made any attempt to find me before, but Sarah waves her hand, and you’re on a mission.” She tossed a few dollars on the table and slid across the bench.

Shit. I pulled my wallet out and tossed a couple of bucks down. Miranda had made it to the front door and grasped the handle when Charity decided now was the time to chime in.

“You’re wastin’ your time, Austin. Let her go. She’s not worth it.” Disgust lifted her lip in a snarl, and I’d never hated the sound of a Southern twang until that moment.

“Ah, shut up, Charity.” I’d have to apologize for that later. Hopefully before Brock found me to turn my face into a punching bag for speaking to his wife that way.

Miranda had heard her and pushed open the door with all the strength she could muster. The bell rang wildly, and I took off after her.

“Miranda!”

The last thing either of us needed was another scene, especially in the middle of town. “What?” She spun and then screamed, “What do you want, Austin? To humiliate me? Are you out for blood? Tell me what you need so I can make it happen. I’ll do anything you ask. I just need this to end.” Tears ran down her cheeks, her shoulders shook, but she held her ground.

I didn’t have an answer, because I didn’t know.

“That’s what I thought,” she murmured in defeat.

As a side note, Blaufeld, also a long-time blogger and an advocate of woman-run anything, is fearless about sharing her opinion. She captured the ears of stay-at-home and working moms on her blog, BacknGrooveMom, chronicling her adventures in parenting tweens and running a business, often at the same time. To her, work/life/family balance is an urban legend, but she does her best.

Rachel has also blogged for The Huffington Post and Modern Mom. Most recently, her insights can be found in USA TODAY, where she shares conversations at “In Bed with a Romance Author” and reading recommendations over at “Happy Ever After.”

Read an Excerpt from ALL I WANT IS YOU

After a few more tries, Emily managed to hit the board instead of the wall around it. When her dart landed in the circle closest to the bulls-eye, she squealed.

“I did it! Look, I hit the dartboard!”

To Phin’s shock, Emily threw herself into his arms, hugging him like he’d given her a car for her sixteenth birthday. Nonplussed but unwilling to let this moment pass, he hugged her back. She smelled amazing, and Phin wished he could tilt her head back and kiss her right then and there.

To his surprise, she did tilt her head back to look up at him. When she licked her lips, that movement shot straight to his groin. The noise of the dive bar faded away, and every thought except Emily being in his arms fled Phin’s mind.

He cupped her cheek. Her eyes widened.

And then somebody bumped into Phin, mumbling “sorry, man” as he passed by. The moment broken, Phin let Emily go.

What the hell was he doing, almost kissing his client in some dive bar? And when she was obviously tipsy?

“I should get you home,” he said. “It’s late.”

“Oh. Okay. Thanks.”

Phin told himself that Emily was silent on the ride to her apartment because she was tired, but he knew better. He almost apologized, but that would only make things worse. Because he didn’t want her to think he didn’t want her. He also didn’t want her to think he did want her.

What a mess he’d gotten himself into.

“This is it,” said Emily, pointing.

Phin parked on the street, squinting at the run-down building with trash scattered in front of it. Cats screeched nearby, while something that looked like a raccoon riffled through the bags of trash. A homeless man was curled up near the stairs to the building.

Emily lived here alone?

It’s none of your business. She’s a client.

“I’ll walk you inside,” he found himself saying.

He walked her to her door, one that was clean but worn like the rest of the complex. One of the numbers on Emily’s door was missing. Phin heard shouting in a nearby apartment, and then the sound of something breaking.

“Thank you for tonight,” said Emily. She jangled her keys, clearly agitated.

Phin put his hands in his pockets, mostly so he wouldn’t touch her again. “Of course. I’d do it the same for any woman.”

Emily’s face fell, and Phin immediately regretted his words.

“Well, good night.” Emily unlocked her door and was about to go inside when Phin stopped her.

“You can call me anytime you need me.” Why am I saying this? Suddenly, he didn’t care about the reasons why. “Are you sure you’ll be okay here?”

She blinked. “At my apartment? Yes.”

Phin wanted to offer to stay with her, to protect her, to keep her from any harm. It was a primal reaction, one he’d always considered ridiculous. But this woman turned him inside out.

He nodded stiffly. To his surprise, Emily reached out and touched his arm before clasping his hand.

“You’re a good guy, Mr. Younger. Better than any I’ve met in a long time.”

“Phin,” he said, his voice low.

“Phin, then.” Her voice was a thready whisper.

The clasp of their hands bolstered him. He moved his hand so it gripped her arm, and then she was in his arms again. She didn’t pull away, and for that, he thanked the universe.

Because he was going to kiss Emily Lassiter, and damn the consequences.

When his lips touched hers, she gasped, the sound quickly turning to a soft moan. That sound heated his blood as he kissed her. He reveled in the softness of her lips and the way she melted against him. She was all softness and light, and he wished he could keep her safe from everything in this life that could hurt her. He kissed her until she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back with an ardor only matched by his own.

Someone yelled, reminding Phin of where they were. He ended the kiss with reluctance, especially as he took in Emily’s red cheeks and lips.

The yelling brought clarity to his hazy mind. What was he doing, kissing his client in the middle of the night like this? Grimacing, disgusted with himself, he set her away from him through sheer force of will.

“I’ll talk to you later.” He turned before she could even reply.

He hated doing this to her, this hot-and-cold act. But he couldn’t let this happen again. His career was on the line. Not only that, but Emily’s brother’s life was on the line, too.

If Phin’s behavior were somehow made public, Phin could be removed from the case. And then what? Would Josh get remanded to adult court because no one else wanted to touch a case that was now tainted?

I need to let her go, Phin said over and over again as he drove home. No matter how much I don’t want to.
