Sunny Shelly’s Review: Matchmaker, by Lauren Landish

Matchmaker

BLURB:

30 men. 1 woman.

I know how it sounds… dirty.

Except it’s just the premise for a new reality show, Matchmaker, where I’m supposed to find love on TV.

Thirty sexy eligible bachelors are competing for my hand, trying to prove their love for me in front of millions of people.

I know most are fake and only here to advance their careers, but there are two who draw me to them like a moth to a flame.

One is blond and blue-eyed, with a chiseled body and a prowling natural grace. And while he might seem a little rough around the edges, with me, he’s kind and genuine.

The other is passionate, driven, and totally focused on me–everything a woman could want.

I feel so torn. Do I choose the one I’m falling in love with, or can I be happy settling for the safe bet?

That should be an easy question. If I were a bystander sitting at home, I know what my answer would be.

But I’m scared. He could destroy me, burn me to ash with his fire. And if I’m wrong about him, I don’t know if I’ll ever recover…

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Another must-read from LL in this series of interconnected standalones! Matchmaker is Emily’s story — we met her and her obsession with reality shows in Mr. Fix-It, as she is friends with Cassie, and the babysitter for Oliver and Mindy (Mr. Fiance). So Emily ends up as the bachelorette on a reality dating show where she meets hot, tatted Hayden and “safe bet Lee. Which one will she choose?

I liked the behind-the-scenes action at the dating show in this book — I felt that it really set this one apart from the others in this series. LL really made the connection between Emily and her man shine through on the page, and I felt the punch in the gut when Emily was more or less forced to make a decision that she wasn’t prepared to make. I was shouting “NO!” at my kindle when both Emily and her guy were being played against one another.

Great job, Lauren! I can’t wait to read McKenna’s story next! Keep ’em coming!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Mr. Big, by Nana Malone

Title: Mr. Big
Series: A London Billionaire Standalone
Author: Nana Malone
Genre: Contemporary New Adult Romance
Release Date: October 24, 2017
Blurb
You’ve heard the rumors.
Yes, they’re all true. The women…the bank account…the really big…
Okay, I’m getting ahead of myself. I’m just saying, there’s a reason some
call me Mr. Big. But none of it will matter to her. I’ve known her since we
were kids. And she’s just as off limits now as she was then.
She’s my best friend’s little sister and when he asked me to give her the
grand tour, he did not mean of my bedroom.
So Mr. Big has to stay under wraps… One problem, she’s the only woman
I’ve ever truly loved. But with the secret I’m keeping, she’ll never love me
back.
Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

If you are looking for a quick romance that isn’t too deep, then Mr. Big is worth taking a read. It’s a brother’s best friend story that is well-paced with intriguing characters and a good storyline. While there is a plot twist in the form of Zack’s secret, there’s no suspense built up for the reader as it is made known fairly early on. The secret he’s keeping from Emma torments him, and the guilt is eating him up, which creates good conflict between the two.

USA Today bestselling author Nana Malone’s love of all
things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense novel
she “borrowed” from her cousin.
It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a

With her overactive imagination constantly channeling her inner Buffy, it was
only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.
While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin,
Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit
as brazen and kick-butt as she thinks she is.

Poppy stiffens on the passenger seat beside me, and despite
my best efforts to glare straight ahead, I see her out of the corner of my eye.
I see her glance down at her recorder, and turn it off. I see her jaw tighten,
then relax, and I see her sigh and turn to look out the window.
I see her cross her legs, flashing me another few inches of
soft thigh.
Damn it. Now my jaw is tight, too.
That’s not to say I don’t like it. I do, but it’s a
performance.
A trick.
If a woman is going to slide her skirt up her thighs for me,
it’s gotta be because she wants me to chase the hem with my tongue. Because she
wants to get lost for a few hours, and part company with a mutually fond
memory.
Not because she thinks I can be distracted by my dick.
She taps her fingers on her knee, then sighs and lifts her
hand to her mouth. Her lips part, pink and shiny, and she sinks her perfect
white teeth into the fleshy pad of her thumb.
This was a mistake. I can’t drag her around the park with
me. Another few hours of this antagonism and who the hell knows what will
happen?
Maybe you can chase her through the forest and convince
her to let you peek up her skirt.
Not happening.
I slam on the brakes and jerk the truck off the path. She
scrambles to hang on to her recorder, her skirt, her plan of seduction.
I don’t care. I point to her door. “Get out.”
“Excuse me?” She spins around, looking back up the road.
Yeah, we’re a few miles from where she left her car.
Not my problem.
“Get. Out.”
“You get out,” she says hotly.
Fine.
I leap out the driver’s side and stalk around to her door.
More thigh greets me as she holds up her hand—clearly, she’s
figured out I’m serious, and she doesn’t want me to touch her.
Fine by me. I don’t want to touch her either. Not much,
anyway. Definitely not in anger.
I actually want to touch her way too much for a stranger
who’s poking around my life.
I step back and cross my arms over my chest. “What are you
playing at?”
She slithers to the ground and straightens her dress.
“Nothing.”
“With your little display in the truck.”
“What display?”
“Letting your skirt ride up. Biting your thumb. Turning off
the recorder.”
Her eyes go wide as I list what she did. She stares at me,
stock-still, then gasps again and shoves her hands hard against my chest. “You…
you… you…”
I step back, and she shoves me again.
“You… beast!” She laughs, and shakes her head, but when her
gaze collides with mine, there’s no humor there. Just angry, pissed-off woman.
“Okay, let’s start at the top. I’m wearing a skirt. Yes. I have legs, that’s a
fun fact, too. And you saw part of them. Whoop-di-fucking-doo, Ranger Boy.
Second, if I was biting my thumb, it was to keep from criticizing your reckless
fucking driving. And finally, I turned off my recorder because this interview
is a waste of my fucking time. And if you think for a hot second that I might
use my feminine wiles to get a story out of you, you’re a fucking asshole who
deserves to be hunted down by paparazzi. I’ll make sure that happens just as
soon as I get off this fucking godforsaken mountain.”
“You’re going to give up, just like that?” I move forward
again, crowding into her personal space. “Lose your story?”
“There’s no story here,” she spits, her jaw set and her eyes
glittering. “Not one worth writing.”
“Because I barked at you?”
“Because you leered at me.”
I had done that. Twice. Maybe three times. And I’d done it
mostly to scare her away, but also a little bit because she itched at me. That
itch now flares up, hot and red and annoyingly principled. “I was trying to
scare you off.”
She laughs again without humor. “It worked, you pervert. How
the fuck am I supposed to get back to my car now? Because I’m sure as hell not
getting back in your truck.”

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Rewrite, by Stephanie Rose

Title: Rewrite

Author: Stephanie Rose

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: October 19, 2017

Blurb

Once upon a
time, a girl loved a boy and he loved her back. They lived happily ever after.
But our
story was never that simple.
I loved
Josh with all I had, right until the day he left. Now, all these years later,
he was back—and wanting me the way I’d always longed for him. Except now, I
belonged to someone else. Someone who never left me the way Josh had. I figured
that was the end of our story. I couldn’t alter the past.
I didn’t
want to rewrite my future.
Brianna was
always more than my best friend. She was the shining light in my black hole of
an existence, and I loved her with every cell and bone in my body. I wasn’t
good enough for her, though—more the villain than the hero in our fairy tale.
When I had to leave, I vowed to come back a better man—for her. But when I
finally did return, she wasn’t waiting for me anymore. She had someone new, her
very own Prince Charming. Did that mean our story was over? I couldn’t change
our past.
It was time
to rewrite our ending.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Rewrite is a wonderfully sweet best friends romance. Josh and Brianna’s friendship was so wonderfully written, from the time they were kindergarteners on the playground to grown adults. They were everything to one another, even when Josh pushed Brianna away, believing that he was doing it for her own good. They were in love with one another before they had any idea what love was, even if neither of them ever admitted it.

Although they reconnected as pen pals while Josh was deployed overseas, they never shared whether or not they were dating. So when Josh moves back home determined to make Brianna his once and for all, she naturally is unavailable. But he is relentless in proving to her that they belong together, and once Brianna finally admits to herself that she loves him too, the reader goes along on her very conflicted journey as she tries to sort through her feelings for her boyfriend and her best friend.

That part of the story alone was enough to pull me in, but two plot twists make Josh and Brianna’s story even more heartbreaking at times. This story is a rollercoaster of emotions, and a beautifully told journey as Brianna and Josh set out to rewrite their love story.

Excerpt
“This place
is amazing, Josh.”
My chest
swelled with pride as Brianna’s widened eyes darted around the shop. Maybe it
wasn’t really my place, but Uncle
Billy trusted me enough to run it on my own. I hired the employees, handled the
books, and met with customers. He depended on me instead of waiting for me to
fuck up. The local troublemaker came back and made good, but that wasn’t such
an easy sell for everyone. Good thing I didn’t give a shit about everyone. The
only opinion that ever mattered stood in front of me, beaming with pride.
My mouth
split in a wide grin. “Thanks. It’s getting there. Hoping things pick up a
little after the holidays. No one wants a new bike when there’s an inch of ice
on the ground.” I laughed until Brianna’s face fell.
“Can I ask
you something?” She slid into the chair in my office as her lips pursed.
“Of
course.” I leaned my hip against the edge of my desk and crossed my arms.
“What’s up, Cupcake?”
“Did . . .
did you really have a new client in Manhattan last week, when you drove me to
work?”
I took in a
deep breath and exhaled slowly. “Why would you ask that?”
“Scott and I—”
She shook her head and waved her hand. “It’s nothing. Don’t mind me.”
“No.” I
nudged her ankle with my foot. “Let me guess. Scott isn’t too happy about me
hanging around so much.” I raised an eyebrow.
Brianna
reluctantly nodded. “It’s a guy thing, I guess.” She chuckled to herself. “They
get territorial if someone else tries to play with their toys.” She laughed
until she realized what she said and then covered her mouth with her eyes huge.
She was so fucking cute I couldn’t stand it. “I didn’t mean play, I meant . . .” She dropped her
head into her hands, and I couldn’t hold in a laugh anymore.
“C’mon,
Bri. I’m dying to know.” I peeled her fingers away from her face and crouched
in front of her. “What did you mean? Scott thinks I want to play with you? Don’t tell him about the
GI Joe and Barbie castle we made when we were kids. He’ll flip the fuck out.”
Her cheeks flushed as she nudged my shoulder.
I caught
her hand and held it in both of mine. As our gazes locked, laughter stopped.
There was no way in hell what I was feeling was only one-sided. I doubted it
ever was.
We didn’t
talk about it, but I remembered every moment of that night at my apartment.
Brianna rushing over to take care of me, the tortured look on her face when I
asked her to get into bed with me. It wasn’t my finest hour, but I needed her.
My soul cried out for her that night and she came, like she always did. She may
have ignored my wimpy confession, but when she said she loved me, I knew she
didn’t mean as only her best friend.
“Josh,”
Brianna pleaded on a whisper. “Don’t, please.”
“Don’t
please what, Bri?” Feeling brazen, I tucked a piece of hair behind her ear and
cupped her cheek. I ran my thumb along the delicate curve of her jaw. Her eyes
fluttered, urging me on. “Don’t touch you?” I let my finger drift over her full
bottom lip. “Don’t kiss you?” I whispered with a husky rasp. Our faces were so
close, our lips brushed. Brianna’s mouth parted, and I uttered a curse under my
breath. We were so damn close. All we had to do was close that distance. Her
hand drifted up my shoulder and clutched the back of my neck.
“Josh,”
Brianna sighed as she rested her forehead against mine. “We . . . We can’t.”
Her hand drifted down my jaw. Her hooded eyes and flushed cheeks disagreed with
the words sputtering from her mouth. I caught her hand and pressed a soft kiss
to her palm. It trembled as she took in a quick gasp.
“Yes, we
can, Bri,” I whispered as I leaned in. “You’re so damn beautiful.” Shit, I almost tasted her. She stilled
as I cupped her neck and inched closer.

Maverick, an all-new contemporary STANDALONE by New York Times Bestselling author Karina Halle is LIVE!!!

Maverick is a complete standalone novel and the second book about the rough and rugged Nelson brothers. Get ready for one wild alpha mountain man – Canada’s never felt so hot!

Forget playing it safe.

John “Maverick” Nelson likes to live his life on the edge – literally. A crucial member of the search and rescue team in the mountainous British Columbian town of North Ridge, Maverick’s brash and bold attitude means he’s the first one to ascend into danger, no matter the risk.

When it comes to women, though, Maverick errs on the side of caution. For all his cocky charm, rugged good looks and sexual swagger, he remains as unreachable as the surrounding peaks. Hot, wild sex? He’ll tell you there’s no better way to spend a cold, wintry night. Relationships? He’d rather freeze.

That is until he lays his eyes on American Riley Clarke. Trading in the crippling expenses of Aspen for BC, Riley is North Ridge’s newest member of their search and rescue team and the only woman on the job, which means spending a lot of time with Mav in adrenaline-pumping situations.

With the chemistry between them hot enough to melt snow, keeping their hands off each other is detriment to the success of their team. Besides, Maverick’s her boss and she didn’t work her ass off in Colorado just to throw it all away for some mind-blowing sex.

But when the worst winter in years sweeps in, Riley and Maverick will have to battle the elements along with their attraction for each other. And if either of them slip up, both of them will be in for a deep freeze.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: Like A Boss, by Liz Matis

Title: Like a Boss
Series: Double Trouble Duet #1
Authors: Liz Matis
Genre: Contemporary Romance
 Release Date: October 17, 2017
Blurb
War veteran Dawson Trudeau never expected his estranged
identical twin to walk into his bar in Alaska, let alone offer him twenty
million dollars to pose as the CEO of King Enterprises while he secretly heads
to rehab for thirty days. With dreams of starting a homeless shelter for
veterans and locating his retired service dog from Afghanistan, Dawson can’t
say no. Then he meets his brother’s sexy assistant and he hopes she can’t say
no—some overtime between the sheets.
Lacey Brooks isn’t attracted to her metro-sexual boss, but
his rough and ready identical twin is just her type. When lust turns into love,
she fears she is betraying the CEO. If she can navigate the family feud to
ensure a spot-on impersonation by Dawson, she’ll finally be promoted to
VP.
If they can pull off the masquerade, everyone wins. But once
the thirty days is over will victory matter if they don’t have each
other?

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 3 Stars

The premise of this book was promising: Estranged twin brothers, who had only met a handful of times in their entire lives, swap places because Aaron, the rich one, secretly heads to rehab. War vet Dawson does his best to take Aaron’s place, and pulls it off with the help of Aaron’s right-hand woman, Lacey. And along the way, Lacey and Dawson are hit with a case of instalove — but he worries that he won’t be enough for the savvy businesswoman.

While Lacey and Dawson have a HFN ending, the last two or three chapters felt rushed. And there were way too many unanswered questions about the brothers, the dark family secret that is alluded to, Aaron’s relationship with their father and the family business. I hope that these will be answered when Aaron’s book — the second in this duet — comes out.

Overall, Like A Boss was a quick read (I read it in 2 hrs or so), and I’m intrigued enough to want to check out Aaron’s book. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Excerpt
Lacey Brooks schooled her features to hide her shock. The beast behind the bar couldn’t be Aaron’s twin brother.
Shaggy. Unkempt. Rough.
She’d been expecting her boss’ mirror image, not someone who crawled out of the Alaskan bush.
But as she drew closer she could see there was more than a resemblance underneath the beard and past-the-shoulder length mane.
Never trust a man with longer hair than you.
Never trust a man period.
Keeping his brother a secret from the world was one thing but how had Aaron managed to keep it from her?
She knew everything about the CEO of King Enterprises. Everything.
Lacey wasn’t just his assistant, she was his confidant, his therapist, his sometime tennis partner, and his friend. But if he kept this secret, what else was he hiding? Like the reason for the cloak and dagger maneuvers, which he’d dismissed as unimportant.
Was it a family feud? A scandal?
Or was Dawson dangerous? A criminal? He certainly looked like it. His icy blue gaze roamed her body as if he owned it, reminding her of Aaron right before he was about to close a deal—a predator. Not a like shark, for they attack on instinct. This was more like a wolf, toying with his prey before sinking his teeth into the neck of its dinner.
“Lacey, I’d like you to meet my long lost brother, Dawson.”
“I look forward to working with you, darling.”
Darling? Ugh.

That twangy accent? Double ugh.

The physical makeover would be the easy part. Taming the he-man into a sophisticated owner of a billion dollar corporation in a day would be impossible.

BLURB:

Music . . . the heart’s greatest librarian.

The average song is three and a half minutes long; those three and a half minutes could lead to a slow blink, a glimpse of the past, or catapult the soul into heart-shattering nostalgia.

At the height of my career, I had the life I wanted, the life I’d always envisioned. I’d found my tempo, my rhythm. Then I received a phone call that left me off key.

You see, my favorite songs had a way of playing simultaneously. I was in love with one man’s beats and another’s lyrics. But when it came to the soundtrack of a life, how could anyone choose a favorite song? So, to erase any doubt, I ditched my first-class ticket and decided to take a drive, fixed on the rearview.

Two days.

One playlist.

And the long road home to the man who was waiting for me.

Drive-Teaser6-Desperation.jpg

EXCERPT:

Breathe. Breathe. This is in the bag, Stella. You can do this, so do it.

I clicked on the camera and quickly glanced at my notes.
One minute.

Electricity shot through my veins and seeped through every pore, reminding me that this was it.

Thirty seconds.
I took a sip of water and set it beside my laptop as I waited.

Ten seconds.
A flicker of doubt processed for mere seconds before I wiped it away.

Five.
I expelled a stressed breath, clicked Go Live, and addressed the camera.

“Womanizer, bully, genius, recluse, and the world’s greatest MC. Even with all those labels, Phillip Preston, also known as Titan, is still a bit of an enigma. Despite the universe he’s constructed with storytelling lyrics, he’s always left it up to us to decipher his truth from his fiction. He burst onto the music scene fifteen years ago, an underdog in the belly of rap, with chaotic and desperate rhymes that resonated and pushed him into an unexpected level of stardom. With one hundred and eighty million records sold, he still holds his title as heavyweight and remains a household staple for his die-hard fans, collecting an army of new followers over the past two decades. I must admit, I was a bit intimidated when I sat down with him this past weekend in his Chicago fortress. I, like millions of others, am a huge fan of his genius. The simplicity of our surroundings in his home studio was shocking, to say the least. The feeling was a bit clinical and there were no platinum records on his walls, no personal photos, and there was no hint of the history he’d made as the world’s most notorious rap star. He sat in a leather chair next to his soundboard, water bottle in hand, and spoke about his love of rap, while subtly redirecting questions about his personal life—though we know he recently broke up with his long-time girlfriend, Jordan Wilson.”

My eyes nearly watered as I watched the live view box tick to a hundred thousand. I had a hundred thousand people watching my podcast in a matter of minutes. I took a deep breath.

“But it seemed my reputation had preceded me because when I sat down with the rap mogul, Phillip appeared ready for the firing squad. We dueled well as I asked the hard questions—the questions of a fan. Questions I know so many of his loyal listeners want answers to, and I think you’ll be surprised to hear his answers. So, without further ado, take a look at my exclusive with the man behind the myths. Feel free to form your own opinions, but above all, remember it’s the music that matters most.”

I linked my pre-recorded interview and watched the ticks explode as soon as his face hit the screen.

That was the moment my career peaked.

With pride, I watched my interview with the white whale, the Moby Dick of the music industry. Gorgeous, brilliant, and highly elusive, Phillip Preston was the hardest artist to get personal with in an interview. And I was the woman he reached out to, to break his silence about his road to success, his parents, his ex-wife, and finally—after some careful eggshell coaxing—he spoke about his recent relationship. He had delivered to me, on a silver platter, highly personal details about his life where so many other journalists had failed, and it was nothing short of miraculous.

It was my greatest accomplishment as a music journalist. I was flying, soaring as my phone began to blow up with message after message. I hadn’t told a soul, not a single person about my exclusive. I was high on adrenaline when the notifications began to ping on my phone. A hundred, two hundred messages, and then I saw the viewer ticks had jumped drastically to half a million. Half a million! I laughed out nervously and checked Phillip’s social media. He had just posted my podcast link to our interview. My jaw dropped. He had over eighty million followers on one forum alone.

And the viewer counts just kept rising. I had done it. I gasped when the ticks went past a million.

A million people were watching my podcast.

A million people were watching my podcast!

“AHHHHHH!” I screamed to no one as I looked around the vacant room. I raised both hands in the air when the ticks rolled past two million. “Oh my GOD!” I shot up from the desk, my eyes full of incredulous water.

I’d never had more than a million views. Ever. And those took months to accrue. It was the greatest career high of my life. I looked back down at my phone, anxious to talk to someone, anyone. Lexi’s middle finger popped up on the screen, and I couldn’t resist answering her call.

“AHHHHHHHH!” I screamed into the phone..

“Stella?”

“Yes! Is it good? You think I asked the right questions? I edited for like nine hours.”

“What?”

“What do you mean, what? Titan’s interview.”

“You interviewed Titan?”

A small amount of my excitement dispersed. “Yours was the wrong call to answer.”

“You fucking interviewed Titan?”

“Yes. I wanted to surprise everyone.”

“And you didn’t bring me?”

“Sorry. I’ll feel guilty later.”

“Yeah.” Her voice dropped. I heard a toilet flush. “Yeah, Stella, that’s so cool.” Another toilet flushed.

“Where are you?”

“I’m in the bathroom at the Marquee.”

“Okay. Well, I’m buzzing right now, woman. Like, literally, my phone is exploding. Five million hits, Lexi. Five million!”

“I’m so happy for you, Stella.”

I frowned. “Yeah, with that amazing monotone, I can tell.”

“I’m so sorry.” And then her voice broke. My best friend doesn’t cry. Ever.

“Oh, shit. What’s up?”

“I’ll call you back, okay? I don’t want to ruin this.”

“You aren’t ruining anything. You couldn’t ruin this. I promise. I’ll be high for days. So, tell me. Why are you in the bathroom?”

“I’m on a blind date. He took me to a wedding.”

“Okay. You need an excuse? That’s not like you. You’re ballsy. Just give him your usual, it’s not me, it’s you.” I chuckled because she’d used it in front of me on a bass player with a cowlick and halitosis.

“Stella.”

I knew that tone. That tone was the bearer of bad fucking news.

“What? Say it.”

“It’s his wedding.”

I eyed the clock while I zipped my suitcase. I had an hour and a half before my flight. I was cutting it close. “Whose wedding?”

“Stella.”

“I know my name. Damn, who—” Realization struck and my heart met the floor. I stayed mute while she rambled on nervously.

“What are the odds? What are the goddamn odds? I don’t know what to do. Do you want me to leave? There’s no handbook for this. Did you even want to know this? That he’s married? I can’t believe I just watched him get married! Who in the hell ends up at their best friend’s ex-boyfriend’s wedding? I couldn’t not tell you.” She sniffed as the toilets repeatedly flushed around her.

“Stella, please say something.”

I pressed the sting back. “I’m alright, of course. I’m fine. Why are you crying?”

“I don’t know.” She sniffed. “Ben called me last night, and things are just so fucked up, and today this shit happens, and I know you’re happy. I know you are. But . . . I mean, this is—”

I put my hand up as if she could see it. “Don’t tell me anything else, okay? I’m good.” I looked at my reflection in the mirror from the bed into the adjacent bathroom. Nothing had changed. I wasn’t leaking. I was fine. “I’m okay. I’m glad you told me. I have to leave for the airport now, or I’ll miss my flight.” A slew of questions was on the tip of my tongue. Did he look happy? Was she beautiful? And more questions I hated myself for that Lexi would never be able to answer. Still, my head and heart refused to keep those questions bottled.

Was she prettier than me? Did he look at her the same way? Did he propose to her with half his heart? Did he think of me when he did it? Was any part of him thinking of me now? Was I in his dreams the way he drifted through mine sometimes?
All my thoughts were selfish. All of them. And of all the thoughts I could have had that day, self-loathing was not the one I expected to nudge its way front and center. I forced myself to speak.

“Stay.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes, of course. I’m fine.”

“This freaky shit always happens. Always with you.”

“I know.”

“It’s like karma or God or someone hates you. It’s so fucked.”

I laughed ironically, though inside my heart was pounding.

Silence passed over the line as we both waited for some sort of solution that wasn’t coming.

“Stella, God, I’m so sorry.”

“About what? Stop. You know I would have told you if the situation were reversed. I should go. Love you.”

“Love y—” I hung up the phone before she could finish, frozen in the middle of the hotel room.
