I left home ten years ago, promising myself I’d never return to the place where I had never been accepted. I was despised and ridiculed for circumstances completely beyond my control.

But when my grandmother passes away, I’m forced to return to Kansas. I will have to face everyone who hated me. But they’re not who I’m most afraid of.

My biggest fear? Facing him.
Jordan Marx.
The boy I once loved more than life itself. The boy who defended me from them. The boy I’d disappeared on, leaving him nothing more than a horrible nasty lie and hastily scribbled note.

When Jordan finds out the secret I have carried for so long, I’m in for the battle of my life.

Or so I thought.

I might have wandered for years on a path riddled with thorns but with Jordan by my side, taking the long road home means more than reuniting with the only man I’ve ever loved. It might just mean finding myself, and the family I never thought I could ever have along the way.

Today we are thrilled to share bestselling author
Jane Harvey-Berrick’s all-new highly anticipated military romantic suspense novel, TICK TOCK

ADD TO GOODREADS

Forget SEALS, Marines, Fighter Pilots – I have the most dangerous job in the world. And I love it.

James Spears is part of an elite group who lives and breathes danger. Where others run from it, he walks towards it, calm, focussed ice-cold. James is a top EOD operative.
Explosive…
Ordnance…
Disposal…

You’d call him a bomb disposal expert. Or crazy. A guy with a death wish. He’s heard it all before and he doesn’t give a shit. He’s the best.

They say he doesn’t have blood in his veins, he has ice. They say he has no nerves.

All that’s about to be tested.

Amira is recruited by the CIA to infiltrate a terrorist cell living in rural Pennsylvania. She’s the perfect plant, no one would ever suspect her. Because her brother was killed when a bomb was dropped on the Syrian hospital where he was working as a doctor. And now hate burns deeply inside her. She’s perfect.

That’s what they tell James when he’s told to train her to be the best damn bomb-maker there is. In a secret camp, deep in the woods, James teaches her everything he knows about building bombs. He’s not a praying man, but now he’s really hoping that he’s doing the right thing.

Part 1 of a series, and a cliffhanger!!

This book was super intense. I’m hesitant to call it a romance, because I really didn’t find that the romance between James and Amira was the focal point. The story — bombmakers, terrorists, undercover agents and black ops — was not my typical reading fare. I was into this more for the forbidden romance that I thought I’d be getting, so I was kind of disappointed in that regard. Nonetheless, this book was certainly gripping and opened my eyes to a world outside of my little bubble.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

Prologue – James

We’re born alone and we die alone.

I’ve never been afraid of dying. It’s living that scares the hell out of me.

But in the bomb suit, I am utterly alone.

There is no today, no yesterday, no tomorrow.

Just here, right now.

There is no God, no Devil, no good, no evil.

Just me. And the sound of my breathing, loud and rhythmic.

Just me. And this bomb.

A bomb is a device that is designed to kill, maim or harass.

I’m not afraid. I don’t have time to be afraid.

The sun burns down, the light is a white haze, sweat runs into my eyes. The longer I’m out here, kneeling in the dust, the more vulnerable the team watching my back.

I can’t be quick. I have to be certain.

Because if I’m wrong, I die.

I am an EOD operator.

I am the Tick Tock man.

“So, Kira.”
Celia drawled out my name from across the table. “How did you two meet?” she
asked with a spark to her eyes as she waved her champagne glass between Brant
and me.
Brant
immediately stopped chatting. “Oh, uh,” both Brant and I said at the same time.
I pressed my lips together and placed my hand on his. “I’ll let you tell them,
sweetheart.” I’d never called anyone sweetheart in my life, but for some
reason it felt right. And I received the heart-melting smiles of the wives
around the table—except for Miranda whose smile was obviously so fake I would
have assumed she had Botox injections right before dinner.
“Well,”
Brant laughed nervously. “Um, I’ll tell just the highlights, but it really—”
“Oh, come
on, we’re all friends here!” Sidney laughed with a spark to her eyes. The light
caught her diamond engagement ring and instantly I panicked that I didn’t have
one. Or a wedding band, for that matter. Under the table, I quickly removed the
ring given to me for graduation by my grandmother and slipped it onto my left
ring finger. Glancing over, I realized Brant didn’t have one either. I wasn’t
sure what to do, or if he had come up for a reason for that. If I was wearing
my grandmother’s ring, it would look strange for whatever reason he might come
up with, so I quickly moved it back.
Brant
glanced at me and I couldn’t help but let out a small nervous laugh. What if
they found out we didn’t even know each other’s names until the day before?
“It all
started with red traffic lights,” Brant started as he gave me a small smile. It
seemed cheesy, but that darn dimple reeled me in. My nervous energy
somersaulted while my heart swooned. Instantly, I realized he was fantastic at
commanding everyone’s attention at the table.
There was
more than just small curiosity about what he would say. I wanted to know his
version of what had happened that night. Where had he been going to begin with?
Was he really that taken with me?
I knew I
had been a one-night stand, but there was that instant—when I had left my phone
number—that hope had swelled it might be more than just that between us. When I
finally realized he wouldn’t be calling me back, any thoughts of something more
with him had vanished from my mind. Well, to be honest, it hadn’t disappeared
from my fantasies. Yet there I was pretending to be his wife.
Maybe
instead of fighting the dinner, which was already happening, I should have
actually been enjoying myself. I picked up my glass of champagne and took a
healthy drink. The alcohol warmed my belly and I allowed myself to be swept up
by the night and my new husband. My conscience had a gag around her mouth and
was locked away in a closet. At least for the time being.
“Ohh this
is going to be good,” Celia said as she shimmied her shoulders and sat up to
listen.
“Well, it
was late on a Friday night and I was hitting each and every light on Main
Street. From the corner of my eye, I saw the woman in the car next to me take
her top off,” Brant said as he looked at me and winked. My mouth popped open
and I hoped he wasn’t going to tell them everything about our night.
Anna bumped
my shoulder, her eyes wide as she laughed at Brant’s description. I shook my
head, playing along.
“Ohh, the
X-rated version!” Celia shouted, and took a drink from her glass. The men
around the table were either laughing or their ears were perked up just as much
as their wives’.
I blushed and covered my face with my hands,
laughing. I held up my hand. “I had a top on underneath,” I added in my
defense.
Brant
laughed as he smiled at me. “She did. It wasn’t much of a top, but from what I
saw it was perfect.” The spark in his eye as he retold our story made
everything tingle inside me.
I tilted my
head, smiling, my heart melting all at the same time. I realized how sweet it
all felt. How sharing “our” story, small as it was, was endearing. This part
was not made up. This really was our story and I loved hearing him retell it,
especially since I had replayed it in my mind so many times in the past six
months.
“Anyway,
she had shimmied out of her pants at one point and put something else on. I
almost got into several accidents trying to see what I could.” Brant laughed
and then continued. “I followed her—”
“Oh, now
you sound like a stalker,” Anna joked, while winking at me.
Brant
chuckled as he looked over to me, and I licked my lips, wanting to kiss that
dimple of his. “Yeah, I kind of felt like one, actually. But you—” He pointed
to me as his eyes sparkled, and then shook his head as he continued. “She did
yell out the club she was going to.”
I nodded.
“I did, so it was kind of my fault for enticing a stalker,” I joked as I took
another drink of champagne, allowing the alcohol to help me enjoy the moment a
little more.
“Anyway, we
danced all night and…the rest is history.” Brant leaned over and kissed me on
the cheek. Everything inside me, especially the warmth of the champagne, made
me want to turn my head and enjoy the sweetness of his lips on mine.
“I think we
just got the G-rated version,” Sidney called out, looking around the table. The
other couples laughed and agreed with her.
I chuckled
and leaned against Brant. He wrapped his arm around me and then bent down. His
lips touched mine enough to linger, and the feeling went straight through me.
Right then I felt like I never wanted the night to end.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

I really enjoyed this novella! It was the perfect length for a binge read in a single sitting. I easily read it over the course of my lunch break.

Brody and Brooke were school pals, until he just stopped talking to her one day. She never knew why, and never got any answers before he just disappeared from town after high school. A decade later, Brody returns to town to settle his dad’s estate — which includes selling the building where Brooke has her floral shop — and he’s forced to face Brooke and the other friends he left behind. Agreeing to help Brooke out for a week before deciding to sell the building or not, Brody sees things around town in a different light… and sees what his life could have been like had he shared with his friend the trouble he was in at home.

I really liked these characters. In an 11-chapter novella, KP does a great job of dealing with the lasting effects Brody has from being a victim of child abuse. The relationship between Brody and Brooke develops from friends to lovers at a nice pace, and once their week in Montana is over, we get just enough of a hint at the problems that they encounter in their long-distance relationship.

Overall, this book was a highly enjoyable friends-to-lovers romance with likable characters, a believable plotline and a HEA that left a smile on my face. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.

EXCERPT

The doctors wouldn’t allow Kade to stay the night, hospital policy, although Kade tried to use his charm to persuade a couple of the nurses and then blamed me for losing his touch with the ladies, sprouting off how fallen in love with me has taken away his game.
The doctor did however come in early this morning and told me they were releasing me. I made a phone call to Krystal and told her to not say anything to Kade. I wanted to surprise him at the track. Her and one other crew member came and picked me up around ten and even though the pain was almost unbearable I couldn’t miss his race.
They were just setting up on the starting line when I finally made it. Michael even had a special spot for me all set up in the announcer’s booth. This had to be the best spot, I could see the whole track from here and there was no chance of flying motorcycles coming at me.
“Well isn’t this a sweet treat, we are honored to have our little hero from yesterday joining us up here in the box, Miss Camille Mitchell from the Sandy Racing Team.”
Everyone in the stands turned to look up at the announcer’s box cheering, but my eyes met with Kade’s very surprised ones. I wanted to down there next to him, but this is where I was able to convince Michael I would be alright and he finally gave in, so at least I’m here.
“I love you,” I mouthed to Kade and even with his helmet on I can see his smile in his eyes.

I own a hair salon, a photography business, and coach soccer, which may leave the question when do I write? It’s how I relax, shutting my brain off to everything else and getting lost in the story. Believe it or not I need noise around me to write and a bowl of peanut M&Ms.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: The Rival, by Megan Green

Title: The Rival

Series: Washington Rampage #3

Author: Megan Green
Genre: Standalone Sports Romance
Release Date: November 1, 2018
Blurb
I love her. But
she loves him.
I’d known Avery Grant was the one for me since the moment she bossed me
around on the playground. After over a decade of friendship, I’m still biding
my time, waiting for the moment she realizes everything she’s ever wanted is
standing right in front of her.
Then one white envelope sends my world spiraling.
A wedding invitation, announcing Avery’s engagement to the one man who
could never deserve her: Miles Johnson.
Miles is the worst kind of human — and my biggest rival. Everything I
can do, he thinks he can do better, including being the best rookie pitcher the
MLB has seen in decades. But if he makes her happy, who am I to interfere?
But when Avery shows up on my doorstep, devastated and heartbroken from
Miles’s betrayal, I can’t help but open my doors for her.
The timing is all wrong, but I won’t miss my shot.
This time, I refuse to strike out.

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 5 Stars

In the afterword of The Rival, MG says that it almost didn’t happen. That she struggled with Avery and Carter. And that is a shame, because they are my favorite couple of this series! I adored the friendship between the two, and how loyal Carter was to her. Even when he lost her to his rival.

Sometimes that “what you want is right in front of you” trope leaves me shaking my head because it doesn’t click, but I bought into every second of Carter and Avery’s friendship and cheered when they took things to a higher level between them. While Avery does move on rather quickly after dumping Miles, it didn’t bother me because of the years of friendship she and Carter already had invested in one another. And The Conflict that briefly splits them up was a bit immature, they both came to their senses relatively quickly, and MG resolved it with a nice big bow and gave me the HEA that I wanted for this couple!

And the epilogue? Catching up with all three of the couples ten years down the road was an absolute perfect way to wrap this up. I really hope there is more to come for this series, Megan Green!

Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars

Another feel-good story in the Indianapolis Eagles series from Samantha Lind. Laura is the assistant GM, and the daughter of the team owner. New trade Mark is immediately smitten with her, but she’s in the midst of a divorce and continues to turn down his advances for two years. But their friendship grows as Mark bides his time until he has the chance to prove to Laura that he is her Prince Charming.

Much like the others in this series, the story is sweet and a little sappy, no relationship drama and likable characters. The couples from the other books make appearances, and we get to see how their relationships are progressing. But there was something about Mark and Laura that just didn’t grab me like the others had. I liked them enough, but they were just missing that something special in my opinion. And I kind of felt let down by the epilogue when it came to Laura’s situation. The reason why her first marriage broke up and how she and Mark are proceeding. I wanted more follow through on that. Since these characters cross over from one book to the next, I’m sure their story will continue in Austin’s book, but I wanted a resolution now!

Overall, this is a feel-good, no drama read, perfect if you are looking for some mindless fluffy romance. I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
