A rainy weekend day was the perfect time to curl up with a blanket and binge Slap Shot Surprise! I loved this crossover between Mabel Buckley of Cherry Tree Harbor and Joey Lupo (son of Nick and Coco from Forked). From Mabel’s awkward word vomit when she thought their plane was going to crash to their steamy one-night stand the night of the wedding, I was hooked on these characters!
The relationship between Mabel and Joe develops nicely through text messages and phone calls as she lives in Minnesota and he’s a pro hockey player in Chicago. They don’t really “date” in the traditional sense, but the few times they get together, it’s electric and sparks fly. Despite Mabel’s best efforts to keep Joe in the friend zone, she lets him back into her bed… and he eventually sets up camp in her heart. Meanwhile, Joe is a a bit of a self-centered playboy who doesn’t want to be tied down — my favorite kind of book boyfriend to see fall hard and fast for a woman!
I really loved the throwback to Giannie and Elle’s accidental pregnancy in Taste, and how Joey called his big brother for advice. I thought it was a sweet moment and a great connection between the two series. The ultrasound scene in Taste stood out to me long after I read that book, and I felt like Joey had a lot to live up to with Mabel’s accidental pregnancyโฆ and Melanie Harlow did not disappoint!
Slap Shot Surprise is set a few years after the events of the other Cherry Tree Harbor books, so I loved getting to see where the Buckley siblings are in their relationships.
