Instead of going inside, I walk around the house, to the backyard, to see if I can help bring in any dirty dishes, but the picnic table is empty. All traces of our dinner party have already been cleaned up by the Ducharmes siblings.
“Thank you.”
“The steak too.”
“Thank you again.”
“And the tart.”
“That was your sister. Let her know you thought so.”
“And the kiss.”
Sunny Shelly’s Review: 4 Stars
Katy Regnery puts an unconventional twist on the classic Cinderella story in Fragments Of Ash: Ashley (not Cindy or Ella, for starters!) has an evil stepfather, heinous stepbrothers and a fabulously gay fairy godfather!
I loved Ash. Despite the horrible things that have happened to her, she was such an optimist. And I found that so refreshing. I thought Julian — a sullen and moody former secret service agent turned glassblower — was a huge jerk when they first met, but he changed his attitude and got himself in my good graces before the book ended! He really steps up as Ashley’s protector, so that gained him some points in my eyes!
I’ve read a few books in Katy Regnery’s Modern Fairytales series, and Fragments Of Ash was a bit darker than the others. This story really flips around the Cinderella story into something unexpected. It’s a slow burn romance with villains, danger, and deep love mixed in. The tragic circumstances in the life of both Ashley and her mother, Trig, broke my heart — but this book ends with a HEA for the heroine, and isn’t that what we all want by the last page?
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
