Just Exes is so much more than a second-chance romance for Lauren and Gage! The blurb is what got me interested in reading this book, but the story absolutely gutted me!
Gage’s life has been completely destroyed, first by high school sweetheart Lauren, and then by the next woman he got involved with. He’s carrying around a massive weight on his shoulders as a result of both relationships, and his hatred for both women runs pretty deep. Lauren has no idea that he’s moved back to their small hometown until he’s the arresting officer who shows up at the scene the day that her sleezy landlord accuses her of burning down the apartment building.
As much as he tells himself that he despises Lauren, though, it’s not long before Gage realizes that she still gets his heart racing. So inviting her to move into the garage apartment seems like a great idea! As they start to hang out once again, Lauren slowly begins to break through his defenses. But when it comes to an explanation as to why she left him all those years ago, Lauren won’t answer. And the mystery surrounding why Gage left Chicago and moved back home is something he refuses to talk about. So how will these two ever work through their issues — and Gage has some pretty dark demons — if they aren’t talking about the big stuff?
There are several plots that are taking place at once, but they are all woven together seamlessly. What Gage had gone through was heartbreaking, and not at all the turn that I expected this story to take! This is not quite a happy-go-lucky second chance romance — there is some dark stuff in here. But it is a marvelous story. Charity Ferrell is a new-to-me reader, so I had no idea that Lauren’s brother had previously had their own books. The characters cross over, but I never felt as if there was backstory that I was unaware of while reading Just Exes.
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
