Another great installment from Lauren Landish in this series of interconnected standalones! First we had Gavin and Brianna in Anaconda, then her friend Mindy and Oliver in Mr. Fiance, and now Mindy’s spunky and sassy sister, Roxy gets her story.
The meet cute with Roxy and Jake was so primal and yet hysterical at the same time when she thought she killed him. So funny how they go from almost doing the deed to her checking for a pulse! And then Roxy learns that Jake is her new boss, setting up a forbidden romance.
Heartstopper is full of palpable chemistry as Jake and Roxy try to deny their attraction, and it’s full of sexual heat when they give in to their attraction! The fact that Jake has guardianship of his teenage sister lends to some very real parenting moments that add a nice layer of conflict to Roxy and Jake’s relationship without seeming forced. And the appearances of all the other characters we’ve come to love from this series (Hi, Grandma Ivy Jo!) complement the couple’s story rather than overshadow it.
But at the heart of Heartstopper is a tale of following your dream. How far are you willing to go to chase it? And how far will you go to make sure the love of your life gets their heart’s deepest desire?
I greatly enjoyed this series, and I hope this isn’t the end! Oliver still has a brother who needs a story, Lauren! Or Hannah?
