Review: Teach, Jillian Quinn

TEACH AN.jpg

Teach is a standalone story, but as a spin-off of Corrupt Me, it tells the story of Luca’s friend Mark, who falls for his older college professor, Olivia. I have not read Corrupt Me, and I did not feel that I was missing out on anything relative to Mark.

I really liked how Quinn sets the forbidden teacher/student romance here in the class of Law & Ethics: Olivia quit practicing law after she won a case while representing a rapist she knew was guilty — but she was bound to provide him with the best legal representation she could, as his attorney — and is now teaching a college law class. Mark has pro baseball aspirations, yet dabbles in illegal activities that could send him to jail. But he is doing so in order to provide for his teenaged sister since his mom is a mess of an alcoholic. If what you are doing is wrong but for the right reasons, does that make it okay?

The relationship that develops between Mark and Olivia is solid, and I didn’t feel like it was being forced upon me. BUT… I felt like the plot point about Olivia being a dancer in order to pay her bills after leaving the public defender’s office was dropped like a hot potato once she and Mark officially got together. They met at the club, and there are a few references of her still working there…. and then nothing?!?! I just think there was a LOT of story and crisis for the couple that could have been mined from her still working there even after they were official, especially considering how possessive Mark gets. I felt that Quinn missed the mark there, which is why I’m only ranking this 4 stars. Otherwise, this would have been a 5-star read for me, for sure.

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily left a review.
